also AFAIK like this is the only movie starring:
Nasiruddin shah & Sanjeev Kumar
Sanjeev Kumar & Anil Kapoor
Anil Kapoor & Mithun (i bet this is not true)
Sanjeev Kumar & Mithun( actually both did star in Baat Ban Jaye but
they didn't have any scenes together)

I dont remember the story vividly but the general plot goes like this.
People can chime in to correct the errors.
It's a remake of a telugu/kannada movie (mana oori pandavulu). The movie was
a decent hit those days. The movie is based on a village setting with a
cruel Zamindar (Amrish Puri) and karz mein doobe hue kuchh bhai... The
brothers being Naseer, Raj Babbar, Anil Kapoor and others.
Sanjeev Kumar iirc, is a disillusioned relative (son ??) of the Zamindar who
has a soft corner for the brothers and everybody else who is being opressed
by the Zamindar. The only problem is that he has taken to the bottle and
except for sympathy does little till the end.
Mithun on the other hand has been reared by the Zamindar as a paltu sher and
will do anything at his behest. He beats up the villagers and anybody who
dares to defy the Zamindar. His love angle is Deepti Naval..slowly but
surely, he breaks the emotional shackles and rebels against the Zamindar.
The climax is the unity and convergence of all the characters to defeat the
Zamindar.
The performances of the entire cast is very sincere and that's what made the
movie watchable.
The movie definitely had a lot of firsts that you mention.

Some songs from the movie that got famous. There are others that I dont
recollect.
1) kaa janoon main sajaniya, chamkegi kab chandaniya...(amit kumar, lata)
picturized on Mithun and Deepti Naval
2) hum paaanch pandav, yeh shakuni mama.....shakuni mama re (lot of singers)

The link that you have posted has a review of the movie..
DISCLAIMER This movie is actually based on an epic - Mahabharat - but
Kauravas are excluded for obvious fear of getting the movie over crowded.
Here Pandavas are taking on Mama - maternal uncle (say him Shakuni or Kansa)
instead.
PLOT Amrish Puri as Veer Pratap Singh is Zamindar of a village, he with help
from Kanhaiyalal or Lala Nainsukh Shrivastava deem himself to be the God of
the village.
Mithun Chakraborty (Bhima) is a slave to Thakur. Whereas Naseeruddin Shah
(Suraj), Raj Babbar (Arjun), Gulshan Grover (Mahavir) and Uday Chandra
(Swaroop) are the protagnists.
Shabana Azmi plays Sundariya a lower cast lady - whom Thakur exploites.
Deepti Naval is Lajiya, Bhima's love but is tempted and exploited by Roopesh
Kumar the Thakur's son who is also in love with citi belle and a con-lady
Aruna Irani.
Krishna, brilliently essayed by Sanjeev Kumar is nephew of Thakur, is like
his name sake is counting 100 mistakes to be made (and to remain passive he
is made a drunkard).
Overall the plot is simplified version of the epic but still is complex and
is revised to attract curiosity.
DIRECTION The direction is excellent and everyone has given a polished
performence, even Roopesh Kumar! The rural background in the movie is one of
most realistic portrayals of villages in Hindi belt of India.
MUSIC True on folk tradition the music is good based on simple lyrics.
TRIVIA Anil Kapoor makes a cameo.
The movie is produced by Surendra Kapoor but on the ground all the
production was supervised by Son Boney Kapoor with able assistance from
brothers Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor.
what a coincidence. This movie was show in Toronto international
channel only last Sunday. I saw it for about an hour and lost
interest.
The usual story: Some Zamindar (Amrish Puri) holds the entire
village to a ransom with his powerful henchmen. Mithun is one
such henchman. he has a bhanja (nephew) Raj Babbar who hates him bcos
he is evil. Nasiruddin Shah is son of a person who wines and
wastes his wealth with Amrish Puri. So Nasir hates him too.
Shabana Azmi is a low-caste lady who is in love with AP.
In order to make her 'ready' (sorry coud not put it more
elegantly) to sleep with him, he marries her in a small temple
with only 1 witness: Mithun. As expected she gets pregnant
and wants AP to make their marriage news public. Again as
expected he says to her FO. She expects Mithun to help her,
but Mithun due to fierce loyalty to AP decides to keep quiet,
even though he does not approve of it. She gets mad.
There comes some usual showdown between suffering villagers
and AP and he kicks them out with his goons. Only mithun treats
them humanly and tells he is helpless.
And then there is Sanjeev Kumar, elder brother of AP. He is a nice
man and knows that his younger brother is evil. He lives alone
boozing all the time [ aside, I have a suspicion that his character
was converted into a boozard character bcos Sanjeev Kumar looked
like one. Gosh. he looked total boozard ]. AP keeps him happy with
money so that he doesn't come back and demand his share of property.
Things change when Mithun decides to marry Diptee Naval. He asks
permission from AP. AP tells him to have 'fun' with Dipti and not
get married, which he flatly refuses. In the argument that follows,
Mithun tells AP "I am not like you to marry someone and then dump".
That provokes and strikes a fear in AP. He worries about Mithun
telling the truth. They break off and become sworn enemies.
Mithun joins the rest of the gang (Raj babbar,Nasir Shah).
I saw only till here. I don't recollect Anil Kapoor till then.
My guess is that they all gang up and finish AP.
Seem to be a usual movie. Nothing special. The problem with it was
that in 2004 it looked jaded. Acting wise the guy who impressed me
most was Mithun. I am telling once again. He was a first rate actor.
Good range of emotions. He was unfairly labeled poor man's AB
and ended up doing third rate films. Others were good too.
He is coming in another B Subash movie to complete the Dancer trilogy.
Unfortunately for him, he really got a lot of crappy movies. He has really
done very well in those that required him to emote/act.
lt
No he chose those movies. He wasn't forced to do them. At some point of time
he decided, consciously, that he was going to be a B/C grade hero, and would
do 20 low budget movies a year instead of 3 good ones. I wouldn't call this
"unfortunately for him".

well mithun struggled from his debut(1978-9) till Pyar Jhuta Nahin (1985).
He had odd hits like Disco Dancer and some gunmaster G-9 series.
From 1985 till 1988-89 he did well. He was quite a saleable star at
that time, though never top rank. In bollywood, if u are a hit only
in small towns, u get labeled appropriately. But after 1989 he went
downhill rapidly. The decision to retire to Ooty and do 20 low budget
movies was after that period only.
The unfortunate part is that, despite seeing his obvious talent,
the film industry chose to treat him as a left-over actor. This is
not a zero sum game, right? There is no law which says that bollywood
can have only x number of top actors. In singing yes. It has become
a time honored tradition in bollywood that there can be only 1 top
singer. If one great singing talent comes, he will just finish off
all other talents. When Rafi and Kishore Kumar dominated, the # 2
was miles behind. Same with Lata. They just took all songs leaving
the crumbs to others. But in actors, there was never any hardcoded
limit. Many top actors can coexist. Meaning, many can deliver hits.
During Amithab era, Dharmendra use to give hits regularly and later
Jitendra too. hence the pity for mithun.
Want to see him act. See Pyari Behna (remake of tamil film
mullum-mallaram). The last scene was too good.
Agreed. I didnt intend to sympathize with him for his bad choices in any
case.

Trust you to pimp for "chaprasi of the sureelas" Amit Kumar. Next you'll be
telling us that Kareena Kapoor is a good singer ... :-)
BTW, is Sumeet Kumar any relation? He sings one of the last songs at
http://www.rajeevtiwari.com/songs.html called "Kaise Main Kahoon". It was
quite popular on the FM radio stations in Bombay in November/December.
Aditya
Nope. The industry did treat him as a decent actor. In 90s he had some
big productions like Tadipaar (Mahesh Bhatt), Gunehgaar (Vikram Bhatt),
Teesra Kaun (Mehra), Trinetra etc. I repeat big productions, not good
movies :-). Thats a different story as hardly any good movies in early
90s. He was settling into a role like say Anil Kapoor has settled in
now, but he started doing those tlv prasad movies which saw 1/2
releases of his happening every month. WHen that happens, no one takes
you seriously. Now he has stopped it and again people are casting him
in big productions.

He is a very good actor, and very likeable.
No siree Bob..

Havent heard Kareena yet. Is Kareena as bad as Sridevi (as a singer of
course)?

Sumeet Kumar is his step brother. I recall reading that he too has got into
singing. AFAIK he is Leena Chandravarkar and Kishore Da's son.

I don't think she's great. Baradwaj saidshe has a quivery bathroom voice -
doesn't seem to be well suited to big changes in pitch. Her "Papa ki paree"
song in MPKDH was more shouting than singing anyway.
And she's looking more and more scary nowadays - before, I used to think her
smile was trying to conceal wind being passed. Her lips don't look quite so
big now, but her nostrils flare a hell of a lot. I thought Esha Deol was
slightly more hairy than her in "Yuva" though. Waxing is far more effective
than bleach, but electrolysis wouldn't be a bad option either.
As for Sridevi, I don't think I've ever heard her sing. I think the only film
I've seen of hers is "Lamhe". My video library gave me a DVD without
subtitles, so I didn't understand most of what was going on.

> He is a very good actor, and very likeable.
Lot of actors claim to have struggled. But Mithun really
struggled. He ran away from Kolkata [ he was in a scene
in AB's Do Anjane shot in Kolkata ] to Mumbai where he
had no contacts. He use to live in footpath and eat
pakodas from street-vendors.
I also heard that he has a heart of gold and gives away
money to the needy with both hands (to use a common
tamil expression). Also he runs some sort of animal
society where stray animals are treated.
She sang in Chandni and in a telugu movie called Kshana Kshanam (a very good
movie by RGV....shows the lighter side of him)
He features twice in Do Anjane.
In the first half, he is one of guys hanging around in the area
(I forgot the exact stuff he does) - an extra like role.
In the 2nd half, he plays Amitabh's role in the movie Amitabh
makes to trap Rekha & Prem Chopra.
> to Mumbai where he
> had no contacts. He use to live in footpath and eat

Didn't he also have some Naxalite connections when he was
in Calcutta ?
> Didn't he also have some Naxalite connections when he was
> in Calcutta ?
yes. that must be in early 1970s. It was about time Naxalite
movement died in WB, thanks to Sidhart Shankar Ray who
followed the principle of "I will kill the movement even if
it means killing innocent youth". Bihar's Hazaribhag jail
was used for fake encounters and killing. MC was long in
the list of police and he had to run away to Mumbai
to escape from them.
Bcos of his political leanings Mirnal Sen (known commie)
knew about him and he got his first film "mrigaya".
Unfortunately it had no effect on his career as it was
an art movie. He struggled a lot before Gunmaster series
established him as a B grade actor whose film runs well
in small towns. Pyar Jhukta Nahin only catapulted him
to 'A' grade, where 'A' means a hero whose film can run
in big cities too.
I saw this movie. A good part of the movie involves crying. It was a remake
of a telugu hit that starred, drillmaster Krishna and Sridevi. PJN was
directed by Bapu.
lt
He was also in the opening scene (when titles are shown) in Khel Khel Mein
which I think was earlier than Do anjaane.
Also the Mithun movie which I enjoyed the most was Shaukeen (starring Ashok Kumar,
Utpal Dutt, Hangal & Rati) which is an excellent comedy
where he has acted very well though of course the movie is mainly centred
on Ashok Kumar, Utpal and Hangal.
Cheers
Champak
From the story, it looks like it is a remake of 'Paduvarahallu
Pandavaru' directed by Putanna Kanagal, who used to make these movies
based on famous novels. A sorry story set in a village.
He was v.good even in Ghulami (JPDutta). Sunil Shetty's character
in Border had a major hangover of that char from Mithun (mouthing
one liners - 'Koi Shaq?').
