The Early bird prize goes to ALOK SINGAL. His was an amazingly early
entry. I got an email within 2 hours of posting the quiz!!! :-) Alok
we really appreciate the enthusiasm.
Now to the results. There were 26 questions in all with equal
weightage. 2 points for correct identification of the film and 1 for
correctly identifying ALL leading actresses in the film. The maximum
score thus possible is 78. This was a pretty highly scoring quiz with
a large number of people managing to crack the first round. The
average score was 56
Thus, MISS LILY takes the first place with a cent per cent hit. Yes,
she scores a full 78 points.
ALOK SINGAL comes a gallant second 71 points.
The third place goes to RAJESH MUNSHI with 66 points.
The answers for all the questions along with the comments follows

GENERAL COMMENTS
Baradwaj>
It was fun and relatively easy. Maybe because Dev films are so
popular? Now if you had a Raaj Kumar quiz... :)
Quiz Master> Jaani don't doubt Raaj Kumar's popularity.. :-)
Deepak> Compliments for putting up a nice quiz, I am sure that lot of
work must have gone in to it!
Faez>
Great effort ! I thoroughly enjoyed the quiz and it certainly reminded
me of a number of films I really should get around to seeing. Dev
leaves a repertoire of films that is undimmed by age. The pleasure of
watching Jaal or Baazi hasn't been diminished by the intervening
years. Some of the more musical clues were a great help, as a lot of
us may not have seen the film, but have many of the SDB/OPN/Jaidev
scores in our music collections.
Quiz Master> Yes, I did realise early on (thanks to my years of
defending Dev Saab against the onslaught of my friends' ridicule :-) )
that even if people don't like Dev Anand or have not watched his films
everyone almost always is familiar with the music from his films. That
surely is timeless.
Miss Lily>
Ritu, thank you for undertaking this onerous quiz-mistressing task.
Your descriptions (read clues) are delightful and make me long to see
all these films (well, maybe not the '70s-'80s ones) immediately. If
some charitable organisation for the cinematically deprived were to
show up and put on a festival of Anandiana, I'd definitely be there.
The thing is, I've read or heard about all of these films, but I've
only seen a few of them in their entirety. (Put it down to exposure to
too much stuff starring the Camel-Faced Dilip Kumar and not enough
starring the Puff-Headed DA). Anyway, this is the first time I've
participated in any sort of quiz (outside of school), so I hope I've
followed the rules properly.
Arun Simha>
Great quiz. Loved it. The clues were very important for my dull
neurons :
Yeskay>
I think the english synonymns for Hindi titles were not really
required and sometimes a giveaway. Altogether a refreshing quiz after
a long time for me. I could get almost all except for a few ones like
Kashti, Rahi, etc. Also, you needn't have to order the quiz in the
almost the order the corresponding films were released. If you had
included more newer films, it would've been more tough as none
would've seen the movies or heard of its actors/actresses.
Quiz Master> Thanks for all the compliments and suggestions. Shall
defintely keep them in mind when I conduct the next quiz.
THE QUIZ
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.
Dev plays a rich zamindar's son in love with a poor maid. The trials
and travails of the young lovers forms the basic story. This late 40s
venture was produced by Ashok Kumar's Bombay Talkies. It was Dev
Anand's first commercial brush with success which had otherwise
'stubbornly' eluded him till then. The Dev Anand-Kishore Kumar combo
made it's musical debut with this film which also featured Kishore
Kumar in a cameo appearance. The heroine was an actress introduced to
films by Dev's elder brother Chetan Anand. She formed a hit pair with
Dilip Kumar in the early 50s and in her later years did a lot of
significant character roles including that of Bhagat Singh's mother in
Manoj Kumar's ‘Shaheed'.
An effervescent performance by a very young Dev Anand and a memorable
musical score by the maestro Khemchand Prakash were the highlights of
this otherwise forgettable film.
Film: ZIDDI
Actress: KAMINI KAUSHAL
Alok>
Is Kamini Kaushal the same lady who did many children's shows on
afternoon TV (Doordarshan). I remember one where she taught
what's-the-name-of-that-Japanese/Chinese-art-where-you-fold-paper-to-make-stuff?
This website has a really cool poster of the movie:
http://www.upperstall.com/people/devanand.html
Quiz Master> Yes, she did involve herself with children's films and
workshops for them. I don't recall seeing these shows on TV (sometimes
I think how off the mark children's shows are they never interested me
as a kid you found them too sidey). But in all probability it would be
Kamini Kaushal.
Arun> I was struggling hard till I saw 'stubbornly'. Ziddi.
Quiz Master> I'm glad Arun, my really obvious clues helped **someone**
:-)!
Miss Lily>
I'm pretty sure that Nirupa Roy - surprise! - was the mother in Manoj
K.'s 'Shaheed'. The confusion may be due to the fact that Kamini
Kaushal was the heroine in the 'Shaheed' of 1949, with Dilip Kumar.
Quiz Master> I cross-checked with IMDB and it indeed is Kamini
Kaushal and not Nirupa Roy who plays Bhagat Singh's mother
(http://us.imdb.com/Title?0293589) in Manoj Kumar's Shaheed. Infact I
remember reading Manoj Kumar's interview where he said he had brought
her out of retirement to do this role and after which she featured in
most of his films (Shor, Upkaar, Purab aur Paschim etc.)
Incidentally the film in question Ziddi, has the immortal Lata solo
'Chanda re ja re ja re' which was parodied later by Kishore/RDB in
Padosan in 'Ek Chatur Naar' (kaaga re ja re ja re)
2.
"Navketan was conceived with my money and Chetan's brains. We were the
first partners." – Dev Anand
A beautiful film based on Gogol's play (Govt Inspector) marked the
birth of Navketan. Directed by Chetan Anand, it starred Dev Anand's
along with a legendary actress/singer whose association with Dev Anand
is equally legendary. The music was by SD Burman who went onto form a
very close and special bond with Navketan Films and Dev Anand. The
film was remade years later by Chetan Anand as Sahib Bahadur starring
Priya Rajvansh and Dev Anand. Though critically acclaimed this film
sank at the box-office without a trace.
Answer
Film : AFSAR
Actress: SURAIYYA
Alok>
This is hilarious: (from
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=afsar+%22dev+anand%22&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&selm=9bdcv2%248lofs%241%40ID-75004.news.dfncis.de&rnum=2)
Navketan's first production was Afsar starring Dev and Suraiyya. The
film was the Anand 's first brush with the censors. They objected to
one of the scenes where Dev kisses Suraiyya's eyes. They insisted on
the scene being scissored. Chetan Anand objected vehemently and after
a lot of deliberation the censors gave in and the film was passed
without any cuts. However, even the "kiss" couldn't save the film and
Afsar sank at the box-office.
Also this: (from http://216.239.39.100/search?q=cache:pBdQQcESOiIC:movies.indiainfo.com/tales/1809_missing.html+dev+anand+afsar&hl=en&ie=UTF-8)
Chetan Anand, after whose son Ketan, Navketan was named, was signed to
direct the company's first film, Afsar. Dev had borrowed Rs. 10,000
from a producer-friend to sign Suraiya, the highest paid star of the
time. However, not even Suraiya could save this beautiful film from
box-office disaster.
Quiz Master> I'm sure after Ketan Anand cooling his heels in jail for
mudering Priya Rajvansh, Navketan would now not take much pride in
this part of it's heritage. Amusingly Dev Anand now says (after the
Priya Rajvansh case) that Navketan was named because ‘Nav' meant new
and ‘Ketan' meant banner. All mentions of it being named after Ketan
Anand have disappeared!
Faez>
Suraiya was certainly underrated. A rare combination of actress and
singer, she had some wonderful songs with Naushad (Tu Mera Chand is a
big personal favourite) and especially Ghulam Muhammed (Dil E Nadaan
Tujhe is another lovely duet).
Quiz Master> Yes, certainly. I love her songs in Afsar and also her
output with Anil Biswas. Rahi Matwale is my favourite :-). She had a
clear as bells voice really melliflous.
Yeskay>
Stardust material: His relationship with Suraiya ended as she couldn't
go against her conservative grandmother. I believe it looked like Dev
Anand got his initial offers just because of the fact he was going
around with her who was the bigger star and later on her career went
on the downslide. So Dev Anand must owe a lot to Suraiya!
Quiz Master> An interesting observation however is that not a single
Dev-Suraiyya starrer was a hit. They worked 7-8 films together and all
flops. So, I think probably the best break in Dev Saab's career was
his break-up with Suraiyya! Also interestingly his first film to make
an impact was Baazi and then Navketan's first big hit was Taxi Driver
and guess who was the heroine of both these films… Kalpana Kartik!
3.
The debacle of his first few films had made Chetan Anand unsure of his
directorial skills. Thus for this film Dev Anand, keeping a promise
made to his best friend from his Prabhat days gave him a break as a
director. It was a 'gamble' that paid off.
Dev plays a loveable tramp compelled by circumstances to be on the
payroll of a gambling don. This was the film with which he discovered
his forte. A landmark film not only in Dev Anand's career but also in
the history of Indian cinema. Scripted by an IPTA(Indian people's
theatre association) stalwart who later was acclaimed for his
superlative acting skills, this trend setting film saw the young
director establish a style for which he would later be heralded as a
genius. This film also saw the musical combination of SD Burman-Sahir
Ludhianvi catch the fancy of the nation in a big way with a very
famous Geeta Dutt number. Dev Anand's real life wife-to-be made a
quiet debut with this film. She was however completely eclipsed by the
spirited performance of the other leading lady in the film.
Answer
Film: BAAZI
Actress: KALPANA, KARTIK, GEETA BALI
Faez> I am surprised to see how many films Kalpana Kartik had opposite
Dev. Nutan and Waheeda get more exposure.
Quiz Master> Yes, she had quite a few considering her very short
career span of 5-6 years. And despite the fact that she couldn't act
to save her life she features in some very prominent and landmark
Navketan films. The only film where she's adequate is Nau Do Gyarah.
Girish> Point to be noted, Aamir has acted in quite a few films with
titles of old Dev Anand films. ;-)
Miss Lily>
'Baazi', co-starring Kalpana Kartik (does she actually manage to stay
in women's clothes throughout this one?) and Geeta Bali. Story and
dialogues by the lovely Balraj Sahni.
Quiz Master>.. ..the **lovely** Balraj Sahni…?!!! Lily I thought you
liked him. Poor man.
4.
Based in a goan fishing village. This is a film about a heartless
smuggler who is reformed by the love of an innocent village girl who
he tries to fool . Dev Anand carries off this grey-shaded role with
adequate ease. Directed by Guru Dutt, this film is particularly
remembered for it's mellifluous music score, again, by SD Burman. As
Dev Anand softly strums the guitar crooning in Hemant Kumar's velvety
voice…..it is but impossible to not get caught in the net of the
beautiful moonlit night.
Answer:
Film: JAAL
Actress: Geeta Bali, Purnima
Alok> I remember when I was a kid and they showed this movie on TV. I
was scared! How much I hated Dev Anand in that movie I cannot tell. I
guess I should see the movie to appreciate Guru Dutt if nothing else
Quiz Master> See it to also appreciate Geeta Bali, V K Murthy, Sahir
Ludhianvi and ofcourse SD Burman :-)
Faez> Jaal is indelibly linked with Hemant's soulful crooning. He made
a nice pair with Dev in House No.44 and the wonderful "Na Tum Hamen
Jano" from Baat Ek Raat Ki.
Miss Lily>
'Jaal', of course; co-starring Geeta Bali, and featuring Purnima in
the vampier role. Song described above is the famous, utterly divine
'ye raat ye chaandani phir kahaan...'
Arun> Ah, the net was a big clue :-) Jaal
Quiz Master> Ah, you make me very happy Arun utilising my clues so
effectively ;-)
5.
Based in a Tea Plantation in North Eastern India during the British
Raj. This is a tale of peasant uprising and a fight for human dignity.
Dev Anand plays a former army officer who arrives in a tea plantation
to supervise(subdue) the workers on the plantation. After a series of
incidents he joins them in their fight. Based on a story by KA Abbas
this starred Balraj Sahni also in a supporting role. The film has
haunting music by the one and only Anil Biswas. A great fare at the
end of which one can only say …..is we wish Dev Anand 'travelled' this
path more often.
Answer
Film: RAAHI
Actress: Nalini Jaywant
Faez> Dilip labelled Nalini Jaywant as his favourite actress.
6.
This film by Hemen Gupta is based in Bengal. Dev plays a young widower
with a small child who pines for his mother. The child believes his
mother is alive and the father does not have the heart to tell him the
truth. One day the child brings home a strange woman and says that she
is his mother. This early 50s film had Dev Anand playing an unusual
(for him) father's role. He gives a convincing performance. The film
had lilting music by Hemant Kuamr whose son (Master Babu) also played
the key role of Dev Anand's screen son. The heroine of this film was a
regular heroine of Dev Anand starrers in his early career.
Answer:
Film: FERRY/KASHTI
Actress: GEETA BALI
Alok> The following confuses me. It says he has three children in the
movie
:-(
(http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%22dev+anand%22+ferry&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&selm=8777cccd.0109140729.40e94a5a%40posting.google.com&rnum=6):
It's interesting to note that before he became stylised, Dev Anand
had actually experimented a lot on different roles and working with
different artists. An eg being 'Ferry' where he plays a widower with
3 children ! Somehow once he acquired his romantic image he competely
became slave to that..
You love this movei, don't you?
Quiz Master> Well this post was written before I saw the film again.
The first time I had seen the film I had not seen it from the
beginning and thought all the kids are his. Only when I saw it again I
realised that they were the ‘padosi ke bachche'. And yes, I do like
this film :-)
7.
"...Chetan Bhaiyya was in a strange mood those days…..he was out of
work. Perhaps that's why he decided to direct the film. The script
went on the sets with minimum fuss. With a 'ghar ka hero' , 'ghar ki
heroine' , cameraman [V Ratra, their cousin] and ofcourse SD Burman.
Even the camera was our own. …….almost as if in contempt for the
script he [Chetan] shot this film in 40 days.– Vijay Anand
Scripted by a still in college Vijay Anand helped along with Chetan
Anand's wife Uma this film turned out to be a turning point for
Navketan and the Anand brothers. First, Vijay Anand made his debut as
a scriptwriter and decided on a career in films, second Chetan Anand
left Navketan after this film to form his own Himalaya films and third
Dev Anand got married to his heroine on the sets of the film . This
was Navketan's first big success.
Set in the streets of Bombay, the heroine plays a singer who comes to
the city in search of a music director. She meets the hero who saves
her from the hoodlums and helps her find the music director. Jealous
of a soft spot that a seductive club dancer has for him she is on the
run again. Dev Anand's wife this time is overshadowed completely by
the sensuous actress who plays the club dancer. The film shares a
title with a very famous Hollywood film from the 70s starring Robert
De Niro and Jodie Foster. SD Burman got his first filmfare award for
the music of this film.
Answer:
Film: TAXI DRIVER
Actress: KALPANA KARTIK, SHEELA RAMANI
Arun> saw this film yesterday
Miss Lily> 'Taxi Driver', co-starring Kalpana Kartik. The "sensuous
actress" who overshadows Kalpana is Sheela Ramani (providing Lata with
one of her rare vamping excursions). By the way, that clue scaled new
heights in obviousness!
Quiz Master> Lily dear I had to have consideration for Arun! Arun,
unfortunately it seems did not require my services for this clue.
A little trivia, both Kalpana Kartik and Sheela Ramani were introduced
to films by Chetan Anand. They both were students of St Bedes in Simla
and they were both winners of the Ms Simla contest... and no both of
them did not marry Dev Anand!
Chetan Anand's last discovery Priya Rajvansh also had the same
credentials.
8.
Dev Anand again does a repeat of playing a lovable tramp who gets
caught in the web of petty crime. KN Singh plays a gang lord who does
not want to let go of Dev after he decides to give it all up and
settle down to a honest life with his girl-friend. Made in a fallow
year after Chetan Anand left navketan this film was a complete washout
critically and commercially. However, SD Burman's music ensures that
the film would never be forgotten. Young girls those days swooned as
Dev Anand serenaded the love of his life in the soft and romantic
voice of Hemant Kumar calling out to her even as the 'earth moon and
stars' watched 'quietly'. While his lady love responded with an
equally beautiful lata number beckoning him into the 'far away world
of dreams'. After such bliss wonder why he later sang about 'giving
up the world and dying'? Maybe because he eventually forgot the house
number of his beloved?
Answer
Film: HOUSE NO 44
Actress: KALPANA KARTIK
Arun> I liked the film :-) Yes, the song is one of the best. Chup Hain
Dharti, Chup Hain Chand sitare" - Sigh.
Baradwaj> ohmigawd. What a score...
Miss Lily>
'House Number 44' (yes, even newer heights of obviousness are upon us,
but there's nothing wrong with that - I love *all* your clues just the
way they are, especially when you praise Hemantda). Co-starring
Kalpana Kartik again. Also contains Kumkum.
Quiz Master> Well let me confess I had a major crush on Hemantda's
voice when I was in school. Ofcourse I outgrew it a long while ago but
I still love the Dev Saab-Hemantda combo. And on the obviousness of
the clue... Lily stop showing off. We all know you cracked the quiz.
Faez>
KN Singh was a great character actor. There were a lot of
"second-tier" actors who gave a lot to Hindi movies, but don't
necessarily get the recognition they deserve. We all have heard of
Dilip/Dev/Raj, but Rahman, Jayant, Mukri and many others leave a great
legacy.
Quiz Master> and to add the great Motilal.. actor par excellence
9.
The year was 1956. By now Dev Anand had established himself firmly as
a part of the ruling trioka along with Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor.
Produced by Guru Dutt Films, this film further strengthened his suave,
urban gentleman image. Guru Dutt's assistant Raj Khosla makes a
directorial debut with this film. Set in the noir style typical of
Guru Dutt films those days, this film is a gripping crime thriller.
Dev plays a crime department officer who is framed in a murder case.
How he proves himself innocent forms the crux of the film. The heroine
is an actress who played a vamp in the previous Guru Dutt film.
Chart-busting music by OP Nayyer , able direction by Raj Khosla and
Dev Anand's youthful appeal makes this film an all time favorite.
While Guru Dutt's muse made an impressive debut as a vamp dancing to
shamshad begum's hindi interpretation of the 'Looking london,
Talking tokyo' syndrome.
Answer
Film: CID
Actress: SHAKILA, WAHEEDA REHMAN
Baradwaj> Comment: 'Looking london, Talking tokyo'... Great clue.
Faez> Rollicking score by OPN !!
Miss Lily> 'CID' featuring Shakila, Kumkum and, of course, Waheeda
Rehman in all her radiance.
Arun> Aakhon hi aakhon mein ishaara ho gaya
Quiz Master> No Arun, the song mentioned is 'Kahin pe nigahen kahin pe
nishaana' the supposed national anthem of the cock-eyed ;-)
10.
For a long time , we didn't take goldie seriously , but apparently he
was and he surprised us when he told us that he had his second script
ready. This time, Goldie insisted he direct the film himself. I was
appalled "Direction requires a very mature person and you haven't even
finished your studies yet", I told him . But Goldie was adamant. "If i
am not allowed to direct , i am not parting with my script", he said
firmly. We were driving to Mahableshwar, for an outdoor shooting -
Mona, Goldie and I. To spite me, Goldie started giving a script
narration to my wife. Even though i didn't want to , i got involved in
the subject and by the time we had crossed thane , the deal was on. –
Dev Anand on Vijay Anand's debut
In the genre of 'road' romantic comedies, this is a slick film
directed by 22 year old Vijay Anand. Dev Anand plays a flamboyant
young man who sets out from Delhi to Bombay to claim his inheritance
from conniving relatives of his deceased uncle. The amount of the
inheritance by some 'arithmetic' adds up to 11 lakhs. On the way he
discovers a young sardar stowed away in his truck who turns out to be
a beautiful woman also on the run from an unwanted wedding. After a
series of duets the two land up at mahabaleshwar where they pose as
husband and wife and crack the mystery of the missing will.
A peppy and youthful soundtrack by SD Burman compliments this
stylishly told tale. The mukhda of one of the most famous Kishore
songs in this film was used as a title for a latter day Amir Khan
film.
Answer
Film: NAU DO GYARAH
Actress: KALPANA KARTIK, SHASHIKALA
Alok>
Found this extremely hilarious thread (made into two by google)
relating to Nau Do Gyaarah First part:
Second part:
Even I know more than the guy in question!
Quiz Master> Alok don't be modest.. you scored 71 in the quiz all this
after claiming to not like Dev Anand!
Girish>
Aa, the maths, nau do gyarah. This is probably india's 1st "road"
movie. Mahesh Bhatt paid tribute to this film not once but twice over.
In HIS road movie (Dil hai ki maanta nahin - which of course was a
copy of "It happened one night" ) Aamir and Pooja waltz in a garage to
this song which is playing on the radio. Looked and sounded really
cool. ;-)
Quiz Master> 'Dil Hai ki Manta nahin' was more of a copy of 'Chori
Chori' (first copy of It happened one night) rather than the original.
Even the songs were in the exactly same situations.
Miss Lily>
Anyway, what was the deal with attempting to pass Kalpana K. off as a
boy? Was this her USP (as you - Ritu - would put it) or something? Or
was it just that it went down so well in TD that they decided to
repeat the stunt in 'Nau Do Gyarah'? Or perhaps it was just one of Dev
Sahab's little idiosyncrasies... hmmm, I wonder if Suraiya was ever
decked out in such a fashion... (Can't have been very convincing, if
she was.)
Quiz Master> I think it was more to do with the realization that KK
looked better as a boy than she did as a girl! I think she made quite
a cute sardar in 9-2-11. Don't know about Dev Saab's idiosyncrasies…
but the chemistry between the two in this film was sizzling. It
contributed a lot to the vivacity of the film.
Shalu>
Long back I read or saw (I dont remember exactly now) an interview of
Vijay Anand where he said that he had written this script with great
detail. In fact the last five minutes that Jeevan gives Dev Anand -
that scene was on paper shot-by-shot including camera angles and
movements! I did not time the scene but I wont be surprised if I find
out that those five minutes were *actually* shown in five minutes
Yeskay> Comments: IMHO, not a good movie to praise VA as a director.
Quiz Master> Yeskay …we know :-)!!!
While on the 5 minutes thing. It is actually nearly 15 minutes. I
remember watching this film exactly at the time in the clock in the
film… that is 5 minutes to 11:00 PM. My aunt was telling us to shut
off and goto bed and we were assuring her that the film would finish
in 5 minutes. It however finished after 15 minutes.
11.
Directed by Raj Khosla. This is a tale of a son who discovers that his
father is serving life imprisonment for a crime he did not commit. He
takes it upon himself to prove him innocent. From the kothas of
hyderbad to meeting a beautiful journalist the story takes many turns
before alls well that end well. The Venus of Indian cinema starred in
the romantic lead opposite Dev Anand while another the leading lady in
clue # 5 played the supporting role of the prostitute. Both Dev Anand
and the supporting actress got filmfare awards for their performances.
SD Burman as usual gave a memorable musical score. A later day film
starring Tabu had a title which was similar to the title of this film.
Answer
Film: KALA PANI
Actress: MADHUBALA, NALINI JAYWANT
12.
An interesting story commenting upon the malpractice of
black-marketeering, this film had the distinction of featuring all the
3 Anand brothers. Dev Anand plays a black-marketer who is transformed
by the love of an upright and principled girl. Made in early 60s the
highlight of the film was that it showed the premiere of Mother India.
It also dealt with a then unheard concept of infatuation. Today it is
remembered most for a lilting musical score by Dada Burman. The
picturisation of one of the most famous Rafi songs that talks about a
'moon that is lost somewhere' has Dev Saab frolicking the countryside
swinging his hands in his inimitable way.
Answer
Film: KALA BAZAAR
Actress: WAHEEDA REHMAN, NANDA
Baradwaj> "Today it is remembered most for a lilting musical score by
Dada Burman." Is there a Dev film from that era that _did not_ have a
lilting score? :)
Quiz Master> Cannot contest that one :-) The emphasis was however on
**most**. The films might have gone down oblivion but Dada Burman's
scores are timeless.
Miss Lily> 'Kaala Bazaar', with Waheeda as heroine. Second lead,
female, is Nanda. The song in the clue is of course "Khoya khoya
chand", which was apparently filmed in daylight..
Yeskay> Comments: Khoya Khoya chand was my favorite Rafi song till I
'saw' the song :)
13.
Dev Anand plays a delightful double role of 2 army officers a Major
and a Captain. Set during the second world war this film deals with
the complications that arise when the Major goes missing and the
Captain who goes to the Major's house to pay condolences is mistaken
for him. Ghost directed by Vijay Anand (though it is credited to
Amarjeet) this remains one of Dev Anand's better emoted films. Jaidev
holds the musical baton with this film and comes up with a memorable
score. Particularly remembered for a famous Lata Bhajan inspired by
Gandhiji's favourite Hindi Bhajan this film was also another feather
in the lyricst Sahir-Ludhianvi's cap.
Answer
Film: HUM DONO
Actress: NANDA, SADHNA
Baradwak> Till I saw this film, I could never understand why Sadhana
was considered such a beauty. But after that dialogue-less first scene
leading to 'abhi na jaao'... Wow!
Quiz Master> I reserved that wow for Dev Anand.. this song makes you
swoon.
Girish> Hum Dono. Great songs but Dev Anand really irritated as the
Moochwalla Army officer. ;-)
Miss Lily> 'Hum Dono', with two heroines played by two fairly boring
actresses: Sadhana and Nanda.
Yeskay> One of the best soundtracks in the history of HFM. Don't
forget 'Kabhi Khud pe' and the famous Rafi-Asha duet, "abhi Na jaao
chodkar'. Sahir at his best.
Quiz Master> Yes, I believe one predominant reason of Jaidev getting
this Navketan project rather than Dada Burman who was the Navketan
regular was that Sahir and Lata could be used in the film's
soundtrack. Dada Burman and Sahir had fallen out after Pyaasa and he
had also fallen out with Lata during that period. Navketan utilised
the services of both these artists by keeping Dada Burman out of Hum
Dono.
14.
An evegreen comedy by Vijay Anand. Dev Anand plays an architect who
gets caught b/w two warring individuals. One of whom is his father and
the other the father of the girl he loves. As he builds a house for
both of them without their knowledge the film traces this very much in
trouble love story through Delhi and Simla. Dev Anand formed a
hit-pair with the heroine of this film who was an highly acclaimed
actress in her own right. In the same year as the release of this film
she also played a stellar role in a Bimal Roy film. Memorable music as
usual was a key component to the success of this film. The title song
was picturized on the heroine appearing in a whiskey glass and there
was yet another celebrated picturisation of a Rafi-Burman beauty on
the steps of Qutab Minar.
Answer
Film: TERE GHAR KE SAMNE
Actress: NUTUN
Arun> Nutun, Saraswatichandra
Alok> Paying Guest .. This was the easiest!
Quiz Master> Sorry Alok I couldn't resist this :-)
Arun you got the answer right. What was this Saraswatichandra comment?
Did not quite understand
Faez> A treasure trove of Dev-Rafi songs
Girish> Loved all the songs
Yeskay> Dil ka Bhavar kare pukar - Songs like these were also the
reason Dev Anand's films were hits in the 60s.

[Post Guide]…..Everywhere he[Vijay Anand] went the Guide followed him
around. "I want to forget Guide," he decided. And for that he knew he
had to make a very different film. RK Narayan would come everyday with
story ideas. One day he started discussing the case of a man who was
there but didn't really exist — and Goldie had the plot for his next
film.. – Quote from Vijay Anand's interview
This very slickly directed crime thriller saw Goldie Anand peaking yet
again after Guide and Teesri Manzil. Years later there was a sequel
made to this film which fell on it's face. The original however is
still remembered for it's nail biting suspense and a gripping climax
shot in the picturesque locales of Sikkim. Supported by the doyen of
Indian cinema and two very able actresses this was Dev Anand at the
peak of his popularity. SD Burman at the ripe old age of 61 churned
out yet another youthful, racy and scintillating soundtrack. The
piece de resistance being a seductive and playful Asha solo which was
executed brilliantly on the screen by the film's second lead actress.
Answer
Film: JEWEL THIEF
Actress: VYJAYANTHIMALA, TANUJA
Alok> And *please* put this comment in: I *loved* Tanuja in "Raat
Akeli Hai". (But Jaya in "Baahon mein chale aao" is also tough
competition!)
Baradwaj> ahh... raat akeli hai. Seeing this, one can truly believe
she's passed on some of that genetic impishness to Kajol :)
Quiz Master> A perfect song. Music, lyrics, singing, picturisation and
performance all were great. A little bit of trivia I remember about
this song is that.. Asha said she couldn't get this song sung to Dada
Burman's satisfaction even after a couple of takes. Finally he came up
to her and asked her if she had ever played that game as child….. you
know when you pretend whisper something in someone's ear but scream
loudly instead. That's the mood I want out of the song he explained.
And the result is there for us to see. SDB was 61 when he got this
impish idea. The child in him never died :-)
Faez> Nice supporting performance by Ashok Kumar. It must have been a
fairly sophisticated film for its time, as it deviated so much from
the usual genre of Hindi movies
Yeskay> The only Dev Anand/VA film I enjoyed apart from Teesri Manzil.

"Stardom is transitory. Stardom has to come to an end. But a man who
is a writer, a director goes on forever. I wanted to reach new
horizons with my work" – Dev Anand on turning director
The year was 1970 when Dev Anand finally turned director. An event
which many feel should have never happened. He is rumoured to have
ghost-directed Teen Deviyan before that but this was his official
project. The film explored a very interesting issue of what happens
when a believer in non-violence lands up in the army where he has to
kill without questioning without reasoning. A novel theme but it did
not set the box-office on fire. He started the trend of introducing
new faces with his first film by launching Nargis's niece in the
vamp's role. The film though a dud at the commercially is remembered
for it's superlative music score by.. yes again SD Burman. This time
he teamed up with Neeraj to give an evergreen ode to the 'worshipper
of love' in the voice of Kishore.
Answer:
Film: PREM PUJARI
Actress: WAHEEDA, ZAHEEDA
Girish> Prem Pujari. Shatrugun Sinha was also given a break in this
movie because he kept pestering Dev for a break. Sinha's unique style
of ligthing a cigarette was latter picked up and copied by "Style
Mannan" Rajnikant. This is why Rajnikant openly calls Sinha as his
"guru" ;-)
Miss Lily>
'Prem Pujari', co-starring Waheeda, with the rhymingly-named Zaheeda
as the aforementioned vamp, I think. And I'm glad that this "event"
(Prem P.) happened, because, before the mirthful eyes of the nation,
it revealed Dev Sahab as the - well, "fool" is the uncharitable word
that comes to mind - that he is, once and for all. And in doing so it
gave fair warning of the spectacular ludicrousness that was to come...
in the form of HRHK.
17.
A breezy 60s formula film. This film has Dev Anand essaying a Shammi
Kapoorish role. Directed by the master of formula films of the 60s…
Nasir Husain. This film was a huge success in it's times. The
directors regular heroine played the lead opposite Dev Anand. The
film is particularly remembered for it's novel picturisation of the
film's title song with Dev Anand atop a train.
Answer
Film: JAB PYAR KISI SE HOTA HAI
Actress: Asha Parekh
Girish>
Not train, atop a taxi. ;-) Jab Pyar Kissi Se hota hain.
Quiz Master> I stand corrected! A car you are right.

Set in Nepal, this is a rare film with sibling bonds as it's focus.
Dev is a pilot who is separated from his sister as a child when their
parents divorce. Years later he goes in search of her after he learns
that she has become a junkie. A trendsetter in the early 70s, the USP
of this film was a swinging score by RDB and a sensational screen
presence of the actress who played Dev's sister. She got that year's
filmfare award for best supporting actress.
Answer:
Film: HARE RAMA HARE KRISHNA
Actress: Mumtaz, Zeenat Aman
Miss Lily>
'Hare Rama Hare Krishna', co-starring the nightmarish pig-nosed
twosome of Zeenat Aman and Mumtaz. Ghastly film, but one can't deny
it's success in delighting generation after generation with it's
unintentional hilarity.
Quiz Master> You have to watch Hum Naujawan if you are looking for
'unintentional hilarity'. HRHK did quite well in scenes b/w the
brother and sister and family. It's the only Dev Anand film that
showed some kind of sensitivity. Yes, the other things in the film are
quite forgettable. And call it excessive mush but I do like the song
'Phoolon ka taaron ka'. And I love 'Kanchi re kanchi re' and 'ghungroo
kya bole'
19.
This late 70s/Early 80s film is based on a very famous hollywood film
which in turn was inspired from a play by George Bernard Shaw. Dev
Anand and Girish Karnard play 2 confirmed bachelors who bring in a
poor girl as an experiment in grooming. The agreement being that if
Dev succeeds in making her his 'favourite' Girish would marry her.
The film had lilting music by Rajesh Roshan. The young female
protagonist in this film was a Dev Anand discovery
Answer:
Film: MANPASAND
Actress: Tina Munim
Baradwaj> RR lifted some tunes blatantly from MFL.
Yeskay> What a same of 'My Fair Lady'. Directed by Basu Chatterjee.
20.
This mid 80s film was a comment on the various problems that plague
our educational institutions. Produced by Dev Anand's daughter Devina,
this film saw Dev Anand essaying another rare father's role. The
actress who he introduced to play his daughter is one of the most
acclaimed actresses today with a lot of sensitive films under her
belt. As was a ritual by now, this film introduced a host of newcomers
in the romantic lead roles. Notable amongst them was a young NRI
actress who after doing a couple of films married a top star. She died
tragically young, succumbing to brain tumor a couple of years back.
But in this film the keyword was 'youth' power.
Answer:
Film: HUM NAUJAWAN
Actress: RICHA SHARMA, TABU
PART- II
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CLUE # 1
This film with an unusual story was set in a secluded hamlet in North
Eastern India. The tribes there do not identify with an independent
India and are opposed to building a bridge to connect them to the
mainland. Dev plays a senior officer of the govt of India who goes
there to emotionally integrate these tribals with the rest of India.
The heroine of the film belonged to a place not very far from where
the film was set. This might have been one of her only appearances
with Dev Anand. For a film set in North-East the music had to be by
the Prince of Tripura. And enchanting score with a very strong NE folk
base.
Answer:
Film: YEH GULISTAN HAMARA
Actress: SHARMILA TAGORE
Quiz Master> Wonder if anyone knows but is this film set in Tripura
actually? Didn't Tripura take time to acceed to the Indian Union?
Anyway, the prominent songs from this film are the fresh as dew
Kishore-Lata duet 'Gori Gori Gaon ki gori re' and the delightful NE
'Tushima O Tushima'..I'm still looking to acquire that song.
CLUE #2
Dev Anand plays crook who marries a police officer's sister to gain
immunity from law. He fools her into believing he is a respectable
business man while he carries on his nefarious activities on the side.
She discovers that her husband is a not a friend but a fiend only
after giving birth to their child. She chooses to walk out of the
marriage and lead a honest life. Dev’s repentance forms the rest
of the story. The heroine was a popular actress of the marathi cinema.
Answer:
Film: DUSHMAN
Actress: USHA KIRON
Miss Lily>
I am totally flummoxed by this clue, because in my ignorance I can
only think of one "popular actress of the Marathi cinema" who worked
with Dev Uncle: Usha Kiron. But that's not the plot of 'Patita', and I
suppose the clue points to something MD'ed by SDB anyway (just because
you haven't specified otherwise). Nevertheless, in the absence of
anything which could possibly be the right answer, I am settling for
the only other Dev/Usha K. film left, something called 'Dushman', from
1957, with music by Husnlal Bhagatram.
Quiz Master> Spot on Lily.. you have hit the nail on the head.
CLUE#3
This critically acclaimed film saw Dev Anand churning out a credible
performance. He is supported by 2 actresses. The first was a Navketan
regular those days, an actress who worked exclusively for Navketan,
and the other an actress who was introduced to films by Raj Kapoor. A
very famous instrumentalist scored the music in the film. A good
product but did not take the box-office by storm.
Answer
Film: AANDHIYAN
Actress: KALPANA KARTIK, NIMMI
Miss Lily> This could only be 'Aandhiyan', co-starring Nimmi (via Raj
Kapoor)
and Kalpana Kartik (via Navketan, naturally). The prestigious MD was
Ali Akbar Khan. 1952.
CLUE #4
A film with a bohemian theme for those times has Dev essaying the role
of a writer who has a brief extra-marital affair with a young girl and
gets her pregnant. The story takes a twist when she turns out to be
his step daughter but the mystery is that his wife refuses to disclose
the father. There are 3 'mahaan haasti's' who could be the possible
candidates and one of them Dev's own elder brother!!. A very bold film
by a director who had whipped up a controversy with one of his
previous films based on a love affair between a young boy and a call
girl. That film had starred Anil Dhawan and an actress who was an FTII
graduate. With a theme like this the film obviously did not find
audience acceptance though who knows it might just be the film that
inspired Mira Nair years later to make her own textbook film on love.

movie you mention, is of course, "Chetna".
Miss Lily>
'Prem Shastra' with Zeenat and Bindu, no? (This I am quessing from
the clue's last sentence; I can't claim to have had any previous
encounters with this unseemly thing.) 1974.
CLUE #5
This film starred Dev Anand along with 3 south Indian actresses. 2 of
them opposite him and one in a supporting role. Dev plays a vagabond
who finds love with a rich girl who has runaway from home. However
circumstances separate them and he, after a bout of amnesia, finds
himself falling in love with another girl. The conflict ofcourse
arises when he has to choose between them! Wonder what Hindi films
would do without amnesia?!. With such a trite storyline the film is
obviously not remembered even though the music is immortal. And.. yes,
btw, this time the music is not by Sachin Dev Burman.
Answer
Film: AMARDEEP
Actress: Vyjayanthimala, Padmini, Ragini
Miss Lily> Amardeep', co-starring Vyjayantimala and Padmini. Also
featuring Ragini (presumably she's "supporting" the stars with the use
of her amazing, outlandishly enormous hands). It's from 1958 and the
music is by C. Ramchandra
CLUE #6
Dev plays a rich businessman's son who shows no inclination towards
his father's profession. His heart is in music. He wants to make a
career out of it but the father opposes it. Given an idea by his
childhood sweetheart to try out a career as a composer he has a final
quarrel with his father and leaves home to try his luck with the
gramophone company. He makes a name for himself but loses his love due
to a misunderstanding. The film had a fresh and alluring though not
chartbusting score by SD Burman. It was a film that started out well
but did not quite reach its destination.

Hey I got 0.5/20 in second mid term of EMT! (No, others aren't supposed

Alok, I was thinking of compiling the statistics for the the quiz.

Along with your above mentioned idea if you tell me what other

OK, I think that these could be useful:
For each question:
a. Number of rights and wrongs (since some may not have attempted that
question). Can be given in a fromat like: right/wrong/not attempted
(e.g. 2/30/0).
b. If someone guessed/thought of a particularly (humorous or otherwise)
wrong answer, then that can be mentioned too (if you deem necessary,
don't give out the name of the person).
Maybe (a) can *also* be presented as a summary in the end (a tabular
format would be great). I would keep this information with the questions
too, so that people wo read the post can immediately see a question and
its statistics.
Standard deviation in the mean score (just kidding, this wouldn't mean
much :) ).
That's all I can think of as of now.

Now, that's a "Trade secret" :)
OK, I think I remember how I did it (others, please don't laugh at my
ignorance about movies and stuff!):
Giving "Anil Dhawan" FTII to google brings us to: (go to the third link,
which is a link to a horribly formated website).
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Anil+dhawan%22+ftii
(The third link is: http://www.filmtvindia.com/directors/brishara.shtm)
This gives the important name of BR Ishaara.
After that, you know (concatenate the lines to get the URL):
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&
safe=off&q=Ishara+%22dev+anand%22&btnG=Google+Search
You go to:
http://www.suryausa.com/sale_dvd_hindi.htm
Then search prem shastra and premshastra on google AND google groups :)
Of course it wasn't that easy when I did it the first time :)
