Being a big fan of Rajiv Rai films, I immediately ordered this DVD from
www.erosentertainment.com as soon as it came out. Vishwatma was released in
1992, and was Rai's followup to the 1989 hit, Tridev. Though this movie
followed the same formula as Tridev in plot structure, it was still an
enjoyable film with some pretty good songs. Unfortunately, this big budget
extravaganza flopped at the box office, and Rai released the lower budgeted
Mohra in 1994 with relative newcomers Akshay Kumar and Sunil Shetty, with
great success...thanks to the Mast Mast number.

Movie : Vishwatma
Year : 1992
Director : Rajiv Rai
Cast: N. Shah, Sunny Deol, Chunky Pandey, Sonam, Divya Bharti, Jyotsna
Singh, Amrish Puri
Manufacturer : Eros/B4U

DVD Review

The DVD was mastered from the film negative, so this transfer has not been
seen before in another format such as video. The aspect ratio used was
approx. 1.90:1 non-anamorphic, meaning that there is cropping from the
original 2:35:1 ratio used by the director. The picture quality is
well....average, showing average, but not great color fidelity. The quality
of the negative is good, showing some wear at certain parts of the movie.
The transfer is not 'sharp' and could have been better. All in all, the
picture quality is barely acceptable, but some shimmering is noticable in
some scenes.

Where this DVD really falters is the sound quality. The original film
soundtrack was '4 track stereo'(I'm assuming that it was that Indian
Ultralex stereo sound that was sometimes used at the time). Though the DVD
claims to have four channel DD sound..the sound quality is TERRIBLE. It
sounds muffled at times, and there appears to be no sound separation. This
is really apparent during songs, when there appears to be distortion when
bass is used in the songs. This is not acceptable at all, and I would have
prefererred a mono movie soundtrack if it was clear and audible, not like
the muffled sound I had to endure. I can't believe that this transfer was
approved by Eros/B4U. The picture quality I can live with, but the sound?
Please stop the 5.1 DD nonsense with these older films, and just give us an
audible, clear mono track. They tried to do this with Janbaaz and Qurbani,
with poor results.

Overall, I would recommend this DVD only to fans of the movie like myself.
The transfer could have been better, and the sound quality is not
acceptable. I hope that Eros/B4U will get their act together on DVD
transfers. Their inconsistency is driving me crazy!

Good review . What can one do about Eros taking all the big movies and
rubbishing them with such bad transfers . I dont even want to open my
copy of HADMRH , one great movie as it has an Eros logo on it .
Go the B4U sites and Eros and complain to them and to the better
business bureau , also write to the PM of India so that the Indian
govt can impose quality control on these DVDs ..

HADMRH=Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain? I bought it a long time ago and
as far as I know it was made with DEI/ERO$. The quality was excellent
and so was the sound.

Eros appear to have redone all of them and made them truly bad . A
friend has borrowed HADMRH and I will have a look at it when he
returns it .

I always look for the older EROS/DEI DVDs because I know that 9 times out of
10, they are of better quality than their EROS/B4U counterparts.
