Nagpur - Former Mumbai police commissioner Hasan Gafoor will face
disciplinary action for telling the media that four senior Mumbai
police officers had evaded their duty during the 26/11 terror
attacks.
Home minister R R Patil, while addressing the state assembly on
Monday, declared that Gafoor's remarks were uncalled for and ''strict
disciplinary action'' would be taken against him. ''We want to send
out a message to the police force that even senior officers, if found
guilty of misconduct, will not be spared,'' he said.
Gafoor, in a recent interview to a magazine, accused four IPS
officers from Mumbai of not ''responding to the situation'' during
the terrorist attack on the city. ''A section of senior police
officers refused to be on the ground and take on the terrorists.
By doing so, they chose to ignore the need of the hour,'' he
reportedly said. Gafoor -- who subsequently denied having made this
statement -- told TOI that he was unaware of Patil's remarks in the
assembly.
The home minister told the assembly that he had sought a
clarification from Gafoor recently. ''In his reply, Gafoor told me
that the statement was made during a casual chat with a journalist.
But should a DG-level officer make such remarks before the media?''
he asked. ''Gafoor ought to have informed me or the CM about lapses
on the part of any officer during 26/11. He could have also informed
the Ram Pradhan committee about the four IPS officers. But he spoke
to the media instead. This is not acceptable.''
Patil said he had gone through the wireless message records of 26/11
and asserted, ''I didn't find anything that shows them [police
officers] to be at fault,'' giving a clean chit to the IPS officers.
