Here are some very good books on individual directors:
"The Adventures of Roberto Rossellini" by Tag Gallagher
"Antonioni" by Sam Rohdie

These books provide a lot of information about Neo-Realism and the
debates surrounding it.

"Cinema: A Critical Dictionary", edited by Richard Roud, contains several
good essays on Italian filmmakers plus an essay on Italian silent film.

You might take a look at these as well:

Pierre Sorlin, Italian National Cinema 1896-1996
Marcia Landy, Italian Film
