... Winona Ryder will start acting in porn... and NOT have to change her
name.
- from Late Night with Conan O'Brien, 9/7/99

I keep seeing more and more porn references in mainstream society every day.
Is this a good thing? Should porn become mainstream, or should it be kept
in the darker corners and back alleys of society? Comments, please...

Can't believe I didn't think of that in the mainstreamers with porn
names thread a few weeks back.

(I'd be happy if Winona would just do a film where she wasn't in
full-length Victorian costume!)

Actually - didn't somebody offer this suggestion in that thread. Are
the talk show writers reading RAME?

Porn's current interests seem to be very much 'in the back alley' :-)

No! porn should stay in the gutter where it belongs.

She's too neurotic about her acting cred. to do anything that drastic.

That was me, it was something about her and Minnie Driver as a strap-on
duo.

Maybe Leno's writers turned Conan's staff onto RAME.

Please may I apologise on behalf of my county as I'm afraid this is
the Brit factor. American actors think that because the Brits do
costume drama it must be classy. Had they ever been to Grimsby or
Wolverhampton they might revise their ideas somewhat.

(All Brits actors, male and female, of course, are whorishly really
after roles in blockbusters with Arnie and Bruce!)

Whatever, I think you should consult an attorney :-)

I'll forgive you, this time, if only for all those albums by The Fall
your country had been so good as to provide. :~}

Good call. It's interesting to note that a Brit actress like Kate
Winslet can do full nudity in just about all her movies without any
material loss of respectibility and yet American's are still under the
impression that one such scene will brand them as a new power bimbo
(TM-Spy Magazine).

You may be right, I noticed Conan made another porn reference last night
(something to do with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon denying tabloid reports
that they are gay, the punchline was that people were just confused
because there is a gay porn video called Good Will Humping).

I saw that too... he cracks me up. Now I got to thinking about Conan and
porn.... didn't he have a little skit a few years back with porn stars as
the actors? There were 4 of 'em (porn stars, not skits), and the only one I
can remember is Ron Jeremy. Did anyone else see this? Remember who the
other 3 were?

Believe me, most Brits would say you were welcome to them :-) (I was a
casual listener, but never a committed fan).

Presumably partly due to the strength of Puritanism in US culture
(e.g. no nudity on network TV) and partly due to the way acting is
part of 'showbiz' in the US and part of 'the Arts' in Britain (and the
rest of Europe).

After all Kate grew up in a world where the previous generation of
Britain's top female thesps had all got naked 'for their art'. Said
thesps' American counterparts - in the main - had left the nudity up
to starlets rather than 'serious' actresses.

Oh, make no mistake, they do no better here. Probably worse, in their
Live At The Witch Trials through, say, Perverted By Language heyday
their fanbase was limited to but a small number of reclusive loners who
sandwiched their discs between Captain Beefheart, Birthday Party and
Residents records and only ventured out of the house to screech
surrealisms at the neighbor kids (hi, how are you). Things have only
gotten worse for The Fall here with their half assed attempts to gain
MTV visibility (which served to pare away the chronically disaffected)
coupled with the emergence of the despicable Pavement (who appeal to
those whose ear canals are too delicate and refined for the klang and
skronk of the original). <sigh> You wouldn't happen to have any copies
of the Man Whose Head Expanded 7" you'd want to mail me at your expense
would you? }:~>

Excellent example of the U.S. way of using nudity in movies is Sharon
Stone. She does the beaver shot in Basic Instinct to get everyone's
attention and then, when she notices she's starting to get a little long
in the tooth and had better set her self up to compete for some them
classy roles, she insults everyone's intelligence by claiming she was
tricked into doing that shot all along. Curiously, Ms. Stone has the
reputation of being one of the smarter celebrities in Hollywood. I
suspect she just told some reporters that (and/or had some friends do
the same) and in their characteristic cluelessness they repeat it every
chance they get.
So you're right about this being tied in with the showbiz aspect of
Hollywood. Nudity as part of the story, or in fact a part of life, are
not considerations. Indeed, that's abstract art/theater talk. Nudity in
film is usually seen as crass and pandering and Americans are, in
general, distrustful of any high minded rationalizing of why it would
appear in a movie (even when such explanations have a basis in fact.
It's analogous to the U.S. attitude toward abstract/conceptual art-it
must be a con). Of course, we pretty much created exploitation films
over here so there's always a little P.T. Barnum style cynicism brought
to bear against any form of entertainment that involves the exchange of
greenbacks.

I think this actually demonstrates her intelligence, She knew that a
fair proportion of people would be happy to believe that she'd been
tricked by a wily old Euro-perve like Verhoeven as it confirms their
stereotypical views.

OTOH it's hard to have a lot of *respect* for her in this area (hell,
she did a Playboy shoot as well before she became a big star - was she
tricked into that too?)

> So you're right about this being tied in with the showbiz aspect of

Hence the multiplicity of scenes in Hollywood films where a man and
woman bonk tastefully all night and then in the morning the woman
chastely wraps the sheet around her when she gets out of bed. This is
unrealistic in itself and doubly so when you consider that in 'real
life' the woman would often have to wrap a *duvet* or a full set of
blankets about her.

Odd contradiction here between the European and American norms. In
America the lower-brow the entertainment the more chance of skin. In
Europe the higher-brow the entertainment the more chance of skin -
though the US does seem to be coming around to our degenerate
Euro-ways :-)
