Although we can't believe anyone would want him, Mel Gibson returned
to work on the set of The Beaver last week.
The movie, which is directed by Jodie Foster, didn't test well, so
reshoots in NYC were necessary.
"Mel was in complete shock," said an insider. "Everyone was walking on
eggshells around him. It was the weirdest set ever."
We can understand why!

Liberals are like this. Lohan and the rest of the lib trash can go to
jail for being drunk in their cars, doing drugs, running into people
in their cars, etc. But then all is forgiven, because they are all
part of the same group of miscreants. Gibson doesn't tow the
Hollywood line so the indignation from the cabal makes it seem like he
won't ever have a job again. But just as with Passion of the Christ,
if he has to go it alone, he will and I hope the same thing happens
with any other films he does, I hope it rubs the lib's face in it.
Sounds like a real pile of crap, this film. How did Jodie Foster get
involved in this frivolous production? There's a kind of karma to
creating junk like this.
This is karma for unloading that big, stinking, warm piece of shit
known as 'Maverick' (1992) they did together.

Its not like hollywood stars with personal problems is anything new.

The title alone is enough to get Jodie Foster excited.
Anyways, this was after Mel's first rant & DUI. He'd already begun
behaving erratically in public and she still hired him. I don't feel
bad for her at all.
Found guilty and does some time? Using language like "niggers" and
"cunts" and his anti-Semitic rantings is enough for me. "We" are not
lawyers or judges. We're consumers of product that Mel Gibson is
selling, and if we think Mel is a fucking idiot and/or madman, then we
have the right to mock and deride as we see fit. If, on the other
hand, you're fine with it, then go ahead and support the man and go
see his movies.

Conspiracy Theory is one of those movies I can't help but get hooked
into every time I surf by... it might be because Mel's character is so
very believable, and so seemingly out-of-character.
The Mad Max series has always been a favorite, and I also really
enjoyed Hamlet.
Sad, really. What a miserably unhappy man he must be.

There is this thing called Hollywood math, a rough calculation on what
it takes for a movie to break even, It includes marketing,
advertising and distribution costs. You basically multiply the
production cost by 2.5 to hit break even - so an $80 million cost
needs to make back $200 million to break even. It is an
approximation, of course, but gives a sense of success/failure.
So, by that admittedly inexact math, Edge of Darkness was a failure,
especially for a star of his caliber.
Turk
I don't know anything about Hollywood math...
All I know is if you spend 80 million and you get back 80 million, not a
penny more or less, ..you break even.
Numbers don't lie, only Hollywood people do.
Hollywood has two books...
One book is for the IRS..and the other book
is for the banks.
One book they make money, the other book they lose money...that's
Hollywood math.

"Edge of DarKNess"
"Edge of Darkness" wasn't bad (although some scenes were painfully
predictable.) in fact, I bought that DVD. It's lack of box office is
probably backlash from Mel's offscreen problems. People don't like the
actor and so avoid his movies, ala Tom Cruise. If Mel would STFU and
just make movies, this would probably blow over. However, I don't think
Mel *can* STFU.

Actually, the movie cost just over $40 million to film and grossed over $120 million worldwide strictly form tehatrical screenings. Home video sales aren't even calculated into the equation.
Gibson is certainly not hurting for money. In addition to what he's made as a film maker and actor, he's also a very succesful real estate and stock market investor.
Wow. It's the battle of the retards.

Mel was obviously lying to his golddigger.
Not to defend or support Gibson in any way...at least a lot of people got
paydays out of that film...including his abused wife...who BTW, I hope gets
every penny of his that she and her lawyers can squeeze out of that jackass.

I'm pretty sure the expectations for a subtitled Aztec movie were not in
the Lethal Weapon or Braveheart league. $50M sounds pretty good, in
fact, for a movie like that. It beat Private Parts.

The point is, if the producers, director, and actors all got paid, it was
a successful venture.
You can't put $80M in the bank and get the millions in salaries and fees
that those people generate.
Which was the greatest movie of all times. Did anyone ever find that
gold CD?

Well, if the worldwide box office is 80 million, the distributor gets back
about half of that (the other half is what the theatres are paid for
showing it). This is, in fact the only number you can trust to be
reasonably true in Hollywood math, because the IRS will nail you to the
wall and flay your skin off in little strips if you try to jigger it.
>Numbers don't lie, only Hollywood people do.
with numbers.
(and I object to the word 'only' in the above sentence. Perhaps better
would 'among the many who lie are Hollywood people'.)
>Hollywood has two books...
>One book is for the IRS..and the other book

>One book they make money, the other book they lose money...that's

Correction: one book is for themselves, and one book is for anybody who can
take some money from them if the project makes a profit.
Keep in mind that Avatar hasn't made a profit yet, according to Hollywood
math. Neither has Titanic. Or the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Or the
Harry Potter movies.
Basically, the box office (ticket sales) and rental receipts (the money
theatres pay to distributors) have to be accurately reported, because the
IRS and FTC watch those like a hawk, and will truly nail anybody who
misreports them. All other numbers are mutable, and will change to fit the
perceived needs of the reporter. For some morbid humor, read the
transcript of Buchwald vs. Paramount.
If the studio reports that the production cost is 80 million, there is no
reason whatsoever to believe that figure is truthful or accurate, it is
just the figure the studio felt would best serve its interests. If it
turns out the figure doesn't work for the studio, they will just change it
(New Line bumped up the 'production costs' of the LOTR trilogy by over 200
million when it became apparant how large the collective box office would
be. It also reallocated the costs between movies to better match which
ones had the higher gross).
To say that no movie loses money is an overstatement, but it is true that
very few do.

No, that's not the point. Those people all get paid even if the movie
isn't released at all. They get paid even if it's the biggest failure
in the world.

Plus you can't trust that the released number is high or low. You've
just cited a case where they inflated the number greatly, but I've also
seen them claim a movie cost half what it did, as you said, if it serves
their best interests.
I can think of examples of that going both ways: TITANIC's production
cost included the price of building the Baja Fox facility, but
ANASTASIA's production cost didn't inclue the price of starting up Fox
Phoenix. Probably because they wanted Titantic to cost more, and knew
Anastasia was going to be a disaster.
You're.. confused. I never made the claim "apocalypto had an $80 million production budget and made less than $81 million." "Starmaker" did.
