The Road -- How does it end?

After 40 or 50 minutes of one of the most relentlessly depressing
movies we had ever seen, my wife and I walked out.
This was after the father and son escaped from that nice house when
some scavenger types were close to finding them.

Was it more tolerable after that?

You are a good example of why American movie-goers are considered
childish by the rest of the World. If you CARED about the ending
(presuming that movies with "happy, happy, joy-joy" endings aren't the
only ones you want to see) then you'd have stayed to see it.

Wow. I wish I could see this one, but there were like, only 100
prints out there and so it hasn't played here. You must live in
Candyland.

considered 3rd rate rubbish in the 1980's, post-apocalyptic junk will
likely beat "The Road" box office take.

I don't think this film, at any time would have garnered a 'post-
apocalyptic-junk' tag, it is a good film. Alas , unlike No Country for
Old Men ... it proved that Cormac McCarthy's prose narrative style is
almost impossible
to translate to film.
The Road engendered some interesting film reviews.... just two
examples ...Roger Ebert and A.O. Scott...felt McCarthy's prose framing
of the story overwhelmed John Hillcoat and Joe Penhall's adaptation.

Todd Field is trying to do McCarthy's Blood Meridian , this will be
even harder to pull off than The Road ... will take an other-worldly
genius of a screen writer to tackle this incomparably muscular novel .

You presumably saw a trailer or review of this movie beforehand and
expected something uplifting and cheerful? It was SUPPOSED to be
relentlessly depressing, and I think it did it quite well.
