Clarify:
Captain Merton (owner of the Merton Phlimmer building), discovered the
portal and jumped into Lester. Merton (in Lester) then plans to jump
into Malkovich through the portal. The next "vessel", according to
Lester, is Malkovich's child. By that logic, Malkovich's father MUST
be Lester.
Thoughts?
I think you're right, but the movie avoids the issue.

I don't think a vessel necessarily has to be the offspring of the current
vessel -- as Norm said, it isn't specified. Maybe if the previous vessel has
no offspring, it jumps to somebody else (in this case, Malkovich).
Good call Melquiades! I didn't think of that... if Lester (so lonely
in his tower of indesciperable speech) didn't have any children, it
stands to reason that the portal may switch to another individual.
One other thing... In the 7 1/2 floor orientation video that Cusack's
character watches near the start of the film, it says that Captain
Merton actually BUILT the building. Perhaps Merton (Lester) actually
knows more about the portal than he is letting on to in the film,
after all, if he built the building, then surely he would know about
the portal, and not simply "discover" it, as he says in the film.
OTOH, the orientation-video scene plays so much like it was lifted from
a Simpsons episode, you can practically HEAR the Phil Hartman voices...
