So, I saw this film, SNITCH, starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and the
opening of the film claimed that it was 'based upon a true story'.
I did some internet searching and found that it was based upon this PBS
FRONTLINE interview:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/snitch/etc/script.html
So, based upon that it would seem that the full extent of trueness to this
story is that people who are arrested are offered shorter sentences if they
testify against others. Everything else in the film, SNITCH, was
untruthful. This is probably a good thing since the film more wrongly
portrays the innocence of the 'victim'/son and then portrays the father as a
nutcase that goes on a murderous rampage...and he has a side kick that goes
on a murderous rampage...and the police let them do it...and then give them
a big financial reward for doing it...and then let the son out of prison so
that everyone can live happily ever after.
The story in the film is so much more interesting than the real life one
where the father never managed to catch anyone and never managed to get his
son out of jail...plus, the real life father was smart enough to work with
lawyers whereas the movie dad just does every stupid thing on blind faith
that drug dealing and killing will lead to his son's release.
Now, for the intrigue: I got curious as to where this family is now. The
original crime by the 18 year old son happened in 1992...so the son was born
about 1974. Here is a picture of the dad when he did the PBS interview:

Doing an internet search for the son's name (Joey Settembrino) turns up
this:

and

The age is right and I think there is a family resemblance. Still, it seems
hard to believe that the US press somehow missed that the kid on which the
film, SNITCH, is based, was arrested on drug/murder charges this summer, so
I must be imagining that it is the same guy...right?
