THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS begins with the title-card: "More of this
is true than you would believe." Indeed, one of this comedy's two
drawbacks is that I found myself constantly wondering exactly *how
much* is supposedly true. The other drawback is that the flick lacks
the cohesion we usually expect in first-class entertainment. Still,
GOATS is fascinating ...and almost certainly the "smartest" of the
weekend's wide releases. And I laughed aloud more than twice.
Recommended.

There is nothing fascinating about idiots who delude themselves into
believing in psychic powers. Before 1960, they would all have been sent to
mental institutes.

I recall reading about the program in a science book a few years ago,
can't remember the title, and thinking how absurd it all was, a lot of
the more ridiculous stuff was actually funded by the US government, I
don't know about the ending stuff in Iraq though since that hadn't
happened yet.

Aha...which may account for the movie's other drawback I mentioned,
i.e., that it "lacks cohesion". Like one movie possessed by the soul
of another. (Both pretty fair ones, though.)
