I found LORNA'S SILENCE a bit less satisfying than Dardenne brothers'
previous stuff. But, like most French movies, this one's so well
acted that we forget we're watching performances ...especially true of
the Dardennes' low-key thrillers. Meanwhile, there is their
distinctive cinematic style of "overheard" gradual exposition, which
one either likes or doesn't ...and, as it happens, I do. Despite my
less-than-total satisfaction with it, LORNA'S SILENCE is mostly
recommended.

This film was my first exposure to these guys and the while the film
could have been more brilliant, I'm looking for their other flicks.
Besides the acting, as you mentioned, there isn't a stock character in
the film. The ending doesn't deteriorate into cartoon darkness and I
really appreciated that. I agree it's not a great film but surely
worth seeing.

One of Ebert's 10 Best of the Decade was their THE SON ...which,
although I believe its appeal is also "non-universal", I forced a few
friends to watch on the decent chance they'd find it as affecting as I
did.

Just reserved that and "L'Enfant" at the library. Looking forward to
seeing both.
