RUBY SPARKS (no spoilers)

The romantic fantasy-comedy-drama RUBY SPARKS got some high marks from
some major critics ...and with Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas, and
Elliott Gould in the supporting cast, one suspects some oomph backed
the production. The actor here, though, is the permanently gangly
Paul Dano, who, nearing 30, continues to expand his already impressive
range of quality roles. And the directors are the male/female duo who
did LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE ...here delivering another smart, coherent
movie that doesn't cop out. Alas -- and though I don't damn RUBY as a
"chick flick" -- the heavier among its proffered insights seemed of
distinctly feminine perspective. (The lead actress was the writer.)
And that's a negative because (it says here) Truth shouldn't have
gender. Still, the guys (literally) at IMDb award RUBY a 7.2 ...and
with none of the usual incentives. Mostly recommended.
