Of course, the celebrated shower scene in Psycho can be read, alternately
as a displaced sex act/masturbation act. Cleaning up, meticulously,
afterwards, puts the emphasis on masturbation, rather than sex.

Indeed. And if you're not quite estute enough to make the connection,
Gus Van Sant can spell it out for you.

Oh, that is an interesting way to regard that scene!

Sex, Lies and Videotape was an interesting film that dwelled on
masturbation, without actually having a "masturbation scene," if I
recall.

Let's not forget Linda Blair in The Exorcist, although I'd say that scene
gave new meaning to the term "self abuse."

I remember Kim Basinger doing that in "9 1/2 weeks", and Bridget Fonda in
"Single White Female" (or was that Kyra Sedgwick?).

Maybe mainstream cinema, in porn I think it might be the opposite...

Funny, I just looked that up in Encyclopedia Britannica, and there it said
"Movie watching is considered masturbation". So, yeah, I guess it is.

Well, yes. Jason Biggs in "American Pie". I'm sure someone already mentioned
this. Also Adam Sandler seems to simulate it a number of times in the "Happy

The bathroom scene in The Right Stuff where Ed Harris as John Glenn and
Dennis Quade as Scott Carpenter are in the own stalls trying to
concentrate on making semen samples for the NASA doctors. Ed Harris as
Glenn is humming "From the Halls of Montezuma" because he's from the
Marines and Quade as Carpenter starts singing " Off We go into the Wild
Blue Yonder" because he's from the Air Force. These guys were so
competative they competed even when they were wacking-off.

Some which tend to be overlooked

Some female extra in the opening sequence of BLOW OUT. It is a mock psycho
on the loose movie (within a movie), a college coed is seen lying while
pleasuring herself without (of course) locking the door.

A Dutch movie called 06 (aka 1-900), sex and love over the phone. A couple
met over the phone and started to make conduct intercourse in the most
unorthodox way. A lot of furious fingering, have to be seen to be believed

Kim Basinger in 9 1/2 WEEKS, not I find the whole thing erotic at all...

In "Fallen Angels" by Wong-Kar Wai (a not-really-sequel to "Chungking
Express") there is a female scene that is really well-shot and part of the
plot, although she does have awful tights on.
She is sufferring from unrequited love for her boss, and it is lunchtime
in an apartment building.

That's strange. I did not know that. I think I heard on Paul Harvey or
someplace that marathon runners perform better if they sleep with someone the
night before.
But anyway, DeNiro's arm movement in the scene looked (to me) like he was
jerking off, and not "cooling off", as someone put it. I've also heard a rumor
that there was a scene of him doing it in his jail cell, which was later cut.

Hmm, now I'm wishing for the following scenerio: I go to a movie
alone. A really lovely lady sits next to me, also alone. During the
movie she starts touching herself. I ask "May I help you with
anything?" She says "Oh, yes, I was hoping you'd ask. I'm working on

So why are you criticizing us for posting, instead of posting your own
favorite masturbation scene from a movie? Do you always turn your head
in embarrassment because you wish you could masturbate yourself but
are afraid you'll go blind if you do so you don't want to be tempted,
or you do watch those scenes but don't want anyone to know because
then some cute guy like me would ask you to let me watch you and you
wouldn't be able to turn me down because I'm so awfully sexy??

I admitted I masturbated for Laura Dern in Mask, and S.Weaver in
Alien. Have you ever masturbated when watching some guy in a movie? Or
when looking at my online pictures?

Nonsense! For everything a season, as you must know. For sucking whole
breast into mouth, indeed there's an optimum size that is smaller than
average. But imagine a soft pillow to sleep on, nicely padded but not
too soft, so big you can lay your head off to one side so your mouth
is near the middle, and right there in them middle is this GIANT
nipple more than an inch long when erect (or sucked out) and 3/4 inch
in diameter? What a treat to fall asleep suckling that!

For caressing, virtually all sizes are great, although the larger the
nipple the better.

In a sweater, the optimum is longer from tip to base than across the
base, and firm or well supported, regardless of size. In a t-shirt,
the nipple is the main feature, by comparison.

*Ding*! Thanks for playing, but you're completely wrong. And as long as
you're being pedantic...

From http://www.m-w.com/dictionary.htm (the online Merriam-Webster
dictionary):

Main Entry: mas暗ur搓ate
Pronunciation: 'mas-t&r-"bAt
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): -bat搪d; -bat搏ng
Etymology: Latin masturbatus, past participle of masturbari
Date: 1857
transitive senses : to practice masturbation on
intransitive senses : to practice masturbation
- mas暗ur搓a暗or /-"bA-t&r/ noun

The transitive sense (requiring a direct object, like, say, "her son") is
the one in which jkeller used the word, and it's quite grammatical.

Funny you should say that...Vince Vaughn actually started pleasuring
himself in front of the camera during the shooting of the scene.
Thankfully, the scene was left on the cutting room floor.

Other notables...obscure, but notable.

-Better than Chocolate (Canada) - Maggie's mom discovers her box of
vibrators under her bed.

-Orphans (Scotland) - Two guys go to their boss' house and discover him
pleasuring himself in front of a dirty magazine. The guys pull out a
shotgun in order to scare the crap out of him and poke him in the butt
with the barrel of the gun. He turns around at the worst possible
moment.

-Hardcore Logo (Canada) - Guy wakes up from taking a nap in the touring
van, pleasures himself, finishes himself off, wipes his hand on the
blanket.

-Apprenticeship of Dudy Cravitz (Canada) - A young Richard Dreyfus'
character discovers his roommate pleasuring himself with a medical book
as a source of visual stimulation. He sarcastically calls out, "Use
your other hand! It'll feel like someone else!"

This coming from the same guy who put up the "What determines an
important movie" thread, regarding the kinda films that they show in
film school. All the Canadian films I mentioned were also part of the
cirriculum on Canadian cinema. Oh dear...

Peace,
Vince Yim

A small correction to your otherwise good example: Quaid's character
is Leroy Gordon "Gordo" Cooper, NOT Scott Carpenter, who was probably
the very last of the original Mercury astronauts who would have
indulged in such a contest, and who was a Navy man, not USAF.
Ironically, much of the Cooper character as portrayed in the film is
is a composite of the real Cooper and another candidate who didn't
make the cut for the "original 7", and was later selected as one of
the "second 9" astronauts, Pete Conrad. Many of the shenanigans shown
being pulled by Cooper in the film actually involved Conrad, who
evidently had a very wild and wicked sense of humor. Unfortunately
this great guy died in a motorcylcle accident last year.

There's a rather indirect one in MAN OF FLOWERS (Paul Cox, AUS, 1983),
we see a man watching a woman strip in front of him, right down to her
rude bits, whereupon he dashes off, and the next thing we see is him
playing an organ. The symbolism is, to say the least, literal-minded
and heavy-handed (?????).

Watching films is not masturbating. Film theory is.
