This one I can buy- he wasn't exactly a "driver," since he was there off
the record, and supposedly had nobody he could trust.

Well, aside from wondering where you got the "dopey" part, they just had
the woman on TV that they based the Kidman character on (an American).
The real woman is a curly-haired brunette, and I think she's actually
*more* attractive than Kidman...

...calling for help most of the time, trying to get a squad in to help
defuse the bomb.

With things as they are in Russia right now, this is probably the most
accurate part of the movie. Except for the large numbers of armed guards
around the nukes. Supposedly, in many parts of the former USSR, the
security on the nukes is lower than the amount you'd find around your
average Wal-Mart.

This was one of the atypical scenes that helped to redeem this movie
for me. I suppose you like the typical Hollywood thing better where
the person who is not a soldier or cop or other "profession of arms"
type person picks a gun for the first time and turns into
Annie-Fuckin'-Oakley?
