No, it was based on a novel by Patrick Sheane Duncan, a Vietnam vet who
directed '84 Charlie Mopic.'

COURAGE UNDER FIRE is not a true story. No Congressional Medals of Honor
have been given for Gulf War activities. There has been one woman who has
been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in its history - I have no
idea whom she is, or what she received it for. (In COURAGE UNDER FIRE, a
point was made that the Karen Walden character, played by Meg Ryan, could
be the first woman to win the Congressional Medal of Honor for *combat*.
In real life, a woman may or may not have already been decorated as such -
for all I know, Congressional Medals of Honor might only be given for combat
situations. Hey, I'm Canadian.)
