BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is a 2017 live action (with lots of CGI) version of
the classic Disney tale. The film opens with a party in France circa
late 1800s I think...a time when there are blacks and Indians and Asians
all hanging out with the upperclass white folks. The vanity and
self-serving-ness of the host is punished with a curse. At that point,
the rest of the film becomes a story about a pretty girl who is
imprisoned, starved, threatened, mentally tortured, and pressured
constantly by every single entity around her to hook up with an ugly
guy. Of course, like any story about female empowerment, the ugly guy
is rich so the pretty girl finds a reason to fall in love with him.
Yes, this film is a musical and it won't let you forget that it is a
musical...except for about 20 minutes late in the film when the singing
is tossed aside for a brief period of an action flick and this is the
best part of the movie. Most of the time, though, this film is solidly
musical and Disney and...well, I honestly couldn't tell if they were
trying to replicate the animated original or if they were trying to
parody the animated original. If you like the music (I'll assume most
everyone would recognize a few of these songs), maybe if you like
musicals in general, this is a must see film. On the other hand, if you
feel too old for Disney tales or you've seen the original and don't care
to see it again, just pass on seeing this film because it isn't breaking
any new ground.

Side note: There has been much discussion in the 'press' and on the
internet about this film having Disney's first gay scene, but in all
honestly, I missed it even happening. Yes, I missed it...even though I
knew about when it would occur and was looking for it. That should give
you an idea about just how 'in your face' the scene was. There's lots
of other 'gay stuff' in the film, but the scene that apparently threw
everyone into a tizzy is right on par with that 'lesbian scene' in the
FINDING DORY movie.

The real point is that there's no need for such things to be "in your
face" ... in fact, if they are "in your face", then they've completely
failed and missed the point, and are mostly likely purposely put in to
simply appease the Politically Correct / Equality nutters.

I heard Emma Watson is in it. Is she playing beauty or the beast?

No but seriously, she'd probably be the reason to see it. Then again
I've seen the 1946 French film and the 1991 Disney animation quite
recently so...

There are rather many versions. For example in 2009 there was this version:

...I can see couple reasons to watch that too (pun intended).

There's also the old TV series (starring Linda Hamilton, who played the
mother in the Terminator movie - now that was one where it was
difficult to tell the so-called "beauty" from the beast!) and the silly
newer reboot version (starring Kristin Kreuk, who played Lana Lang in
Smallvile).

Big tits is not enough of a reason to see a movie.

It is for Russ Meyer fans.

More likely Easter eggs for the insiders who will catch them.

Assuming they are not just paranoid interpretations by homophobes.People
who would think National Velvet was lesbian propaganda, or there was a
gay subtext to the Hope and Crosby Road pictures.

Is this about the house manager? Isn't he just supposed to be French?

Wait. You mean they're not?

They are all french, which probably explains why they all act a bit
strange for men. Of course, this latest guy doesn't even have a chest
full of hair to prove his manliness.

I gotta say I'm totally surprised at how huge the boxoffice is. I know that Disney's been hyping the heck of the movie, but I didn't think it would catch on this much, especially with its lukewarm reviews.

I went to see "Hidden Figures" and I found that three or four BatB screenings were already sold out. Then I saw a BatB audience leaving a theater, and there were so many little girls in Belle costumes. Are these girls destined to grow up to be cosplayers?

There's a lot of kids (well, girls, mostly) who grew up watching this
movie who are now pushing 30 and taking THEIR little girls to see it.
