Of course, I had my eye on Ralph for most of the night and I have 2
questions..
1) Who was that lovely woman on his arm that I know have to be jealous of?
and
2) Any idea who "Becky" was in the note he held up at the end?
Any help would be appreciated
Carrie
Francesca Annis - from Dune (as Jessica) and his mother in the Broadway
and London Hamlets. That's how they met. What a complex guy Ralph is.
She's much older than him, I believe, but certainly looked fantastic at
the awards.

: 2) Any idea who "Becky" was in the note he held up at the end?
His note said something about Ivanov, which is the play he's either
currently starring in or just finished starring in in London, can't
remember if the run ended for the Oscars, or if it just took a brief
break. Perhaps she's someone in the play? I thought he was rather goofy
all night, for someone with such a serious stern reputation. It was rather
endearing.

That was Francesca Annis, who he is supposed to be living with now. She is
the woman he left his wife, Alex Kingston, for, and she also played
Gertrude to his Hamlet in London and on Braodway. I think she looks pretty
amazing for a 52-yr-old. :)

I believe that is his assistant.

Francesca Annis, who played Gertrude in Ralph's production of "Hamlet."
He's never smiled as much as he did last night so she must be good for
him.

He mentioned Becky on E! Channel's pre-show, she is his assistant.

Kinda gives the Oedipal interpretions of Hamlet's closet scene a bit
of credence, doesn't it?
Tom Miller
I was watching Joan Rivers "Assess the Dress" pre-show on E! (shoot me,
I'm shallow), and she goofed big-time. When Ralph came up, she asked who
the woman was! When he said "Francesca" Joan got huffy and asked "what,
no last name?" As if she'd never heard of her. Great Hollywood reporting
there, Joan.
Guess she's not a big fan of "DUNE," which Francesca was great in, BTW.
No, I really mean it. Didn't like "Lost Highway," loved "Dune" (shoot me,
I'm weird).

She played Lady Macbeth in Roman Polanski's Macbeth (1971). I think
she was in her 20s. The talented and handsome Jon Finch (who doesn't
seem to be up to much) played Macbeth.
It's a very good film but, perhaps, not for the sqeamish.

Not to turn this into alt.shobiz.gossip or anything, but she doesn't look
ANYThing like Alex Kingston. I still can't believe (after seeing Moll
Flanders on PBS) how much Alex Kingston looks like Minnie Driver. She was
nothing like I expected.
Michalle
She's on "Cybill," and she's had roles in "Mr. Holland's Opus" and "Four
Rooms." I think her name is Alicia Witt.

Lynch's name was on the theatrical release, but he removed it
for the modified version that was broadcast. It was replaced
with the old "Alan Smithee" standard.

I thought that was hysterical! I'd never seen her in anything before I
saw Dune recently, but even before she started dating Ralph her name was
very familiar to me.

David Lynch did direct DUNE, but if I recall correctly, he demanded to be
credited as Alan Smithee for the television cut of the film. Someone
correct me if I'm wrong.
Alicia Witt played Paul's sister Alia. I understand that she is (was?)
part of the cast of TV's Cybill (sorry, I don't watch TV, so I can't
confirm.) She's been in a number of films - my favourite performance of
hers is a stunning one in Rafal Zielinski's FUN, but most well-known one
is probably in Stephen Herek's MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS; she plays the shy
redhead clarinet player whom Richard Dreyfuss coaches in the first
vignette of the film.

Heh heh heh - I've been snickering about this one for awhile, especially
because of they played mother/son in Hamlet, but given how happy he looked
at the Oscars and how happy and sweet he's been in the pre-Oscar
interviews I've seen, it certainly seems to be working for him!

Why, she is in fact the daughter on "Cybil." Alycia Witt, her career has
not foundered at all.
I don't think Lynch disavows having directed it, he just was unhappy with
the outcome/editing.

She was Francesca Annis, age 52, who played his mother in Hamlet.

His assistant. The sign above that said "Hello Ivanov Babes" and it
referred to the Chekov play he is doing in England right now (and the
reason he has that not-so-fine mustache)
As for Becky, all I heard was that she was some assistant of his.
Hope this helps,
