In the trailer for Apollo 13, the news media is interviewing the three
astronauts who are going. Gary Sinese is in the middle between Tom Hanks and
Kevin "Center of the Universe" Bacon. Since we later see Sinese in the
control room talking to the astronauts in space, is this trailer a goof-up?!
Later, we see another actor with Hanks and Bacon in Apollo 13.

Just wondering,

Gary Sinese plays astronaut Tom Mattingly who was originally supposed to
go up with Jim Lovell and Fred Haise. He was found to have been exposed
to measles and was replaced by Jack Swigart. So this is not a goof.

However, I think I saw in the trailer Lovell (Tom Hanks) saying the
"Houston, we've got a problem", but I'm pretty sure it was really said
by one of the other astronauts.

No, the astronaut that Gary Sinese is portraying(I can't recall
his name) was originally supposed to be on Apollo 13, but due to injury
or illness he had to be replaced. The other actor is Bill Paxton. You
may remember him as the "Express elevator to hell!" guy from Aliens, as
well as some other films.

SPOILER FOR PEOPLE WHO KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE HISTORY OF APOLLO 13:

It's not a goof, and I'm afraid you made one yourself. Sinise is
standing not between Hanks and Bacon, but between Hanks and Bill Paxton.

This is because he is playing Tom Mattingly, who was originally part of

the Apollo 13 crew, but was forced to step down because he had been
exposed to measles. He was replaced by Jack Swigert, played by Kevin
Bacon in the film.

All of you are right. The Gary Sinese character was originally scheduled
to be part of the crew of Apollo 13. Because of his exposure to German
measles, he was replaced. He became one of the main CAPCOM (Capsule
Communicator - I think) voices in the mission so will be in the control
room. The Ed Harris character is the mission director so will also be
prominent in those scenes.

Of course not. As all space junkies know, Mattingly the character played
by Sinese got bumped from the flight at the last minute when he was
exposed to measles.

And he walks away with the movie!!! He is FANTASTIC, even Tom Hank's

Ed kicks ass whatever role he takes on! I had to watch the Abyss

Did anyone enjoy the performance by the guy who played

making sure that enough power was available to get the
ship home (he had a slight eastern accent, wore horn
rimmed glasses, and spent a lot of time giving Gary

That was Dean Cain (of Clark Kent/Superman fame), and I agree that he turned
in quite a nice performance -- he also had that boy-genius-in-a-big-meeting
feeling down pretty well.

The actor that I can't place, who I was also impressed by, was the one who
played Sy -- the bald guy with glasses in the control room who had the line
about it being a quadruple failure and assumed that it was an
instrumentation failure. Anybody remember the actor's name?

I forget his name, but he is a regular in Ron Howard films.
Think back to "Far and Away"...he was also the chicken farmer who
spat in Nicole Kidman's face.

Another Ron Howard regular was the photographer who asked
the three whether "13" was unlucky. He was Shannon (Nicole)'s
father in "Far and Away" as well, the one who wanted to
"break the law". :)

Just a little trivia tidbit. The character was
actually John Young, the astronaut, who was the
backup mission commander and later flew on Apollo
16, as well as two shuttle flights.

Don't know the actor, but the character was
Sy Liebergot, the EECOM (Electrical, Environmental,

time of the explosion.

I think the actual person was John Aaron, 26 year old boy genius who
was considered a 'steely-eyed missile man' by the rest of the NASA
controllers. My impression from 'Lost Moon' was that he worked out the
CM startup sequence and Mattingly spent 4 hours in the simulator testing
it -- a little different from the impression they give in the movie.

Look: *everyone was great and accurate!*

The three astronauts were low key guys: see the documentaries.

Check the bios: Lovell is one of the few astronauts still married
to his first spouse! He's a low key guy!

If they had played them as Buck Rogers, Hans Solo, and Flash Gordon,
it would have been a farce. They'd have had laser fights!

Harris stood out cause Kranz is an army sargent-major type: don't
f__k with him. He's the boss. See the Apollo 13 documentary: even the
vest was accurate to a T!

A great ensemble piece!

Yup. D'oh! I thought the original comment referred to
the 'John' Charcter who woke up Ken Mattingly after
the explosion occurred. That was John Young.

Indeed, the engineer was John Aaron, and from pictures
I've seen, was not a bad resemblance.

I don't know about his wife, but Rance Howard, his father, played the
minister who was with Lovell's family during the re-entry. Rance Howard
often has small parts in his son's films. Clint Howard always does, as
best as I can remember.

Clint Howard. Ron's brother.

Don't think so, but his mom played the elder Mrs. Lovell, the slightly
confused mother who was to be distracted by Buzz and Neil.

I just got back from vacation, so someone has probably already said that
the bald guy is in fact Clint Howard, Ron Howard's brother and child star
of the TV series Gentle Ben.

Did anyone notice that one of the guys in the control room was Marc
Maclure, the guy who played Jimmy Olson in Superman?

I enjoyed this character also. I searched for his name in the credits-- I
don't who this was but I thought it was Dean Cain from Lois and Clark at
first..

If this is the guy I'm thinking of, could he have played a diminutive
alien in a first-season Star Trek? That would have been 1966. I think
it was "The Corbomite Maneuver." The Enterprise is threatened by a
large bald alien presence that turns out to be a puppet, and are
later entertained by the little alien and given a drink called
"tanya." The alien is obviously a 6- or 7-year-old.

I'm referring to the short, bald (with dark hair fringe) man wearing
dark-rimmed glasses.

By way of introduction, I have to say that I thought this movie took something
very dramatic and turned it into something a little less interesting. I
thought there were a lot of hots that were bad film shots that were saying:
look how clever we are with computer graphics (e.g., the shot oft the NASA tour
in the beginning, and the shot of Sinese watching the launch -- it could only
have been better Sin. didn't have no legs).

BUT i did think the supporting cast was pretty cool. Command central: cool.
That John character cool. The one nerd (with one line): cool. The guy with
the cool black tshirt (johnny cash collection): cool. The guy who goes to pick
up Sinese's character at home: cool. I predict big futures for every one of
those actors. In fact I was hopping Apollo 13 had a homepage so I could find
out their names.

If we're thinking of the same character, it took me a while to figure
this out, but he's the actor who played Bryce on MAX HEADROOM.

Too bad for you. You missed a wonderful film. I knew the story, knew
how it turned out, and I was on the edge of my seat for most of the
second half!
