Downloaded and watched Star Trek last nite. Not real impressed. I give it
** out of five stars.

What I liked about it:
Good job of introducing likeable characters/actors like Spock, Urhua, McCoy,
Sulu, Chekok and Scotty.

Good choice of Captain Pike.

The older Spock gave a good performance.

What I didn't like about it:
Didn't see anything Kirk like in this Kirk. Other than seducing the Green
Woman (can't remember her race's name) didn't see anything that makes me
think it is Kirk.

Didn't like the romance between Spock and Uhura. Seemed contrived to show
that see Kirk doesn't get the woman everytime. Way too emotional of a
relationship for Spock.

Didn't like the alternate reality. Could have accepted it if they did a
normal ST thing and fixed it at the end, resuming the normal timeline and
them losing memory of the alternate time line and attack from the future.

The romulan ship and captain seemed like a copy of the last movie, Nemisis
(sp?). Nero could have been the Picard clone and the ship seemed similar to
me. Although it also borrowed from the B5 Shadow and Vorlon ship designs.

For a mining crew the romulans sure seemed to have advance weaponry and
technology not related to mining. Also how did they repair the drill that
Kirk damaged on Vulcan? Or do they just have a multitude of spares
(possible) but should have been explained. Not just pull out the drill for
Earth like it was never damaged. Also how did they keep their ship running
well for 25 years. Think Voyager, away from all resources. They were
either trying to stay hidden or the older timeline did not have the
technology or materials to keep their ship in good repair. Their ship
should have been falling apart and running out of materials.

I get tired of the same old storyline of taking two characters who we like
and who love each other and making a movie about how they hated each other's
guts for 99% of the movie. What's wrong with Kirk and Spock instantly
having chemistry and being drawn to each other as friends? What they did
was way to formuliac and a formula I really never have liked.

In Summary:
If they had returned the timeline to Vulcan not being destroyed, Kirk and
Spock never having gotten off to a horrible start in their relationship,
then I would think they were in good shape to make a good movie with this
cast the next time. But now they will either have to ignore much of what
happened in this movie, or pretend it didn't happen.

I think you're supposed to get that this young Spock was much more in
touch with his human side than the somewhat older version we recognize
from TOS, hence the romance and the occasional anger management
issues, not to mention a certain intellectual arrogance that is quite
different than the self-confidence of the original.

The entire point of this movie was relaunch the franchise in a way
that allows future entries in the series to diverge from what we
"know" to be the canonical histories of the original series'
characters. There was nothing to "fix" because that history is secure
in its own timeline. These are essential new characters in a new
timeline, not the old ones going back retreading their old steps.

Well, at a critical moment, *this* Spock got support from his father
where Spock Prime got none and ended up estranged for years, and
the support was in favor of his human side -- that's got to make
a difference.

Wasn't there a scene of Spock Prime looking at Young Spick and Uhura
where you kind of got the feeling he'd always regretted being
childless, or is my imagination completely making that up?
