Twilight sequel has best opening ever with 72 million

Makes $72.7 million, beating 'Dark Knight'

Summit Entertainment’s “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” tore up the box
office record for best opening day, grabbing the title away from
Warner Bros. “The Dark Knight,” and earning a spectacular $72.7
million yesterday at 4,024 theaters.
An exceptional feat for a film playing outside the summer frame.
There were an array of estimates being reported on the internet about
how high the first day of "New Moon" actually was. This morning's
figure is Summit's official Friday estimate.
“Dark Knight” had minted $67.2 million from 4,366 runs on July 18,
2008 before making a three-day opening weekend of $158.4 million.
Fueling the Friday B.O. for “New Moon” were midnight shows in 3,514
venues which drew in a record-breaking $26.3 million for the time
slot.
The opening day for “New Moon” posted more than a 100% gain over the
first Friday of “Twilight” which made $36 million a year ago and a
three-day weekend of $69.6 million.

This pissed me off last night. They moved other movies to smaller
theaters and we caught a late showing of The Blind Side (decent movie,
btw, not blatantly manipulative like I thought it would be) because
the earlier shows were sold out due to being moved into smaller
theaters. The theater management was not prepared for the onslaught
last night. The lines for shows on opposite sides of the theaters
overlapped on their opposite sides, meaning pretty much the whole
theater for each show got in line early. This was a 20-plex, but in a
mall so the lobby was inside. The kids want to go see the Fox movie,
but after last night's experience, I might let the vampire wannabe
crowd die off a bit.

plex with a truly vast parking lot, and could not even get into the
lot. There were 14 and 15 year old girls running across the streets
like deer. I was blown away, so we went home and watched a DVD
instead.

(You mean you had them in your headlights?...) I wouldn't be so
horrified were this Hamelin pre-schoolers stampeding unto the latest
Disney piper. But when I hear of, say, 'Twilight' soccer-moms, I'm
tempted to don my End-Is-Near sandwich board...
