I cannot speak for others. I do NOT concur.

I do not concur. I think Bullock is a good, competent actress. Sure she's no
Meryl Streep, (I mean who is?) but her performances make her movies generally
watchable.
But here's what I don't get.
Dawn Taylor, Andy "The Shawshank redemption", and Matt Nania have repeatedly
said over and over in these newsgroups how Bullock is a major, major draw, (and
her movies don't even make $60 million) and that her salary should be $20
million+ like the male actors like Tom Cruise.
They also talked about how 'Hope Floats' and 'Forces of Nature' were huge hits,
when in fact, they were barely hits.
But on the other hand, Dawn, Andy, and Matt were the same people who kept on
saying that 'Patch Adams' and 'You've Got Mail' were Oscar worthy.
Go figure their tastes.

I think she's the current "best actress to always star in crappy films."
Wonderful actress, horrible roles.

I like Sandra Bullock. I think she's a good actor. I do NOT think she's in Jodie
Fosters class as an actress. I think the part of Clarice Starling would have
overwhelmed her. Maybe in another 6 or 7 years.

I don't really see Meryl Streep as a point of reference for anything. Though
heralded as one of the greatest actresses of our time, she really isn't
anything special. A great actor is one who can make you forget that they are
an actor, and Streep has never acieved this. Every film performance she has
ever given has come across as "Meryl Streep speaks linesthat someone wlse
wrote." She speaks the lines very well, mind you, but has never trully become
a character, in my opinion. I'm not saying that every character she has played
is exactly the same, but any of her roles could have certainly been played as
well, or better, by a different actress.
Just my 2 cents.
Dennis Burger
No, I don't concur, but her role-picking has been abysmal since While You Were
Sleeping.
Of course, I'm not sure how she would've done with a role like... oh, let's
say, Clarice Starling.

Not a Streep fan either, huh? Glad to know there are others out there who feel

'Manhattan' and 'The Deer Hunter' are the only two decent movies I can remember her being
in, offhand.

She's notoriously flat chested -- jokes about it.

I'm sure this was rhetorical, but the funny part is that there is
another Sandra Bullock, somewhere in the south I think. I remember
reading in the a.f.s-b newsgroup that she was getting a lot of email
that was directed at the actress. Be interesting to read some of the
messages, eh? ;)

I generally agree, the exception being "In Love and War", which was a
decent dramatic part. (if you like depressing war romances)

To be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Michael Bay, no doubt.

I think the whole thing about 'acting ability' is really hard to be
objective about. Usually, you either identify with an actor/tress possibly
because you enjoy their movies or characters, or you don't. It's hard to say
that a popular performer 'shouldn't' be popular. More accurate to simply say
you don't care for her. Personally, I don't care for Julia Roberts but a lot
of people out there must.

boy are we on the same page here. i cannot tell you how incredibly
difficult it is to watch any of her films....she ranks up there (or is
it down there?) with nicole kidman who, by the way, would be a nobody

I'm sorry, but you're making entirely too much sense here.
This I completely disagree with. Kidman has more talent in her ass than
Cruise has everywhere. Cruise has that great smile and that's about it
(most of the time). Don't get me wrong, I like him in his movies
usually (I loved MI). But if you've seen Kidman in either TOO DIE FOR or
DEAD CALM, you know she can act. Cruise's best moments were in RAINMAN,
for which he was ridiculously overlooked thanks to Dustin Hoffman. But,
Kidman's success as an actress has nothing whatsoever to do with Cruise,
IMO.

Tom Cruise is a better actor than most people give him credit for. Yes, he
uses his smile a little too much every now and then, but after seeing Eyes
Wide Shut for the third time I must say that he did a fantastic job
portraying all the right emotions. It is a very calculated performance
(thanks to Kubrick, no doubt).
But, like you said, his best performance was in Rain Man, where he kind of
left his operatic acting style behind him. Of course, it came back in fine
form in Interview With Vampire, where it was used to the character's
advantage.

Hi. You seem to have trouble separating actors from the characters they
play. Did you assume Tom Hanks was a simpleton after seeing Forrest Gump?

I agree that occasionally you can see Tom Cruise "ACTING", but in
INterview with the Vampire he was great. And he was great in Jerry
MGuire (sp?) and in Mission Impossible. But ever since I heard that
they use some sort of voice synthasizer to make his voice seem less
squeeky, his voice always seem abnormally deep to me. anyone else
notice that?

I'd have a witty retort if I thought one was necessary...but I'm not

One of her best pre-stardom performances is in Bogdanovich's The Thing
Called Love, with River Phoenix, Samantha Mathis and Dermot Mulroney.
Or maybe it's Dylan McDermott. She plays an aspiring country singer on
the fringes of the Nashville music scene.
Recommended, if you can find it.
John Harkness
She does a good job in "The Vanishing" opposite Kiefer Sutherland, although
it's just a supporting role - wish she'd had a bigger part in that one. I'd
like to see her that pre-fame way again - a little more understated and
softer - and a lot less the smiley, feel-goody, toe-wiggly and ain't-I-cute
way she's cast sometimes. I'd be happy if she dropped the romantic comedy
shtick for a few films and softened her nervous-energy edges just a bit.

It's Dermot Mulroney (always get those names confused myself :-)). I LOVE
that movie, I've seen it a bunch of times. It is so full of heart, but not
schmaltzy and cutesy. The characters are just likeable and interesting, and
the acting is soft and understated. I can't say enough good things about it.
On a side note: I was watching David Letterman on TV a few years ago, and
Sandra Bullock was the guest. She talks to Dave about how she had been on a
trip with her friend Samantha Mathis. In the middle of that conversation I
decide to check what's on the other channels. The first channel I switch to
is showing "The thing called love", and it's in the middle of a scene with
Sandra Bullock and Samantha Mathis. It freaked me out.

You should check out the movie John Harkness mentioned in his reply, "The
thing called love". Great movie, especially if you like country music like I
do.

Repo Man
John Harkness
Yes, I enjoyed it as well, John. It's far from a great film, but I
really liked Bogdanovich's atmospheric direction, the music numbers and
the acting. River Phoenix (in one of his two last films) already had
this drug problem, which is probably one of the reasons why he is a bit
weaker here than usual. (The list of his brilliant performances contains
"Running on Empty", "My Own Private Idaho", "Dogfight" and "Stand by
Me".) Still, he is even quite good in Bogdanovich's picture. I think,
the best performance in THE THING CALLED LOVE comes from Mathis, but
Bullock is also good.
Greetings.

Boy, now I have to chime in. I'm not a huge fan of either actress
- Bullock almost always plays the same geek girl in every movie (I haven't
seen many of her later films, so maybe she's changed) and I'm not overly
attracted to Julia Roberts, although she can act. Still, I can see a
movie with the three of them stranded in space or something and I think of
