Hi, I noticed an insane number of references to other films and other
directors in Shanghai Noon. Seems like there should be a list somewhere of
the references! Off the top of my head...

Cat Balou - the hanging escape
John Woo and Tarrintino films - two-fisted gun fights, Mexican Standoffs
Pulp Fiction - the miraculous gunfire exchange

What else?

Minor spoilers....

"Well lookee here, we got a mexican stand off, cept we don't have any
mexicans"

That line ruled but I swear I've heard it before...

The title itself is a reference to "High Noon".

And, "The good, the bad, and the ugly".

Roy O'Bannon's real name being Wyatt Earp.

But the film that was most present in my mind, while
I watched comedy "Shanghai Noon" was the pilot for
the ultra serious 1972 television series "Kung Fu".

I was only fiftten or sixteen when that pilot was
shown. I remember it making a big impression on me.

There are a number of similarities. Caine enters
a number of hostile bars, and after much provocation
busts them up, Chon Wang busts up a hostile bar in
SN. Caine enters the USA as an indentured laborer
for the railroads. Chon confronts the snake-head
who is imprisoning indentured laborers.

When SN comes out on video, I think I will rent both
of them for a double bill.

I'd say SN plays more fast and loose with western
history than KF. Possibly, in part, because it is
aimed at an international audience who don't care.

Which are themselves references to old westerns.

Marshall Van Cleef looked an awful lot like Lee Van Cleef, especially
the Lee Van Cleef from the old Eastwood spaghetti westerns.

Wasn't the burst out of the church a play on Butch Cassidy & the Sundance
Kid?

The part near the end when our hero shows off some fancy gun twirling, and Roy
exclaims, "You really are the Shanghai Kid!" sounded like it was a riff on
something, but I'm not sure what. Any ideas?

In article <39344254...@mail.utexas.edu>,

You bet it was! I caught that right off. Also, the 'training to be a
gunfighter scene' struck me as a take off of a scene in "Little Big
Man" when he becomes "The Sodey Pop Kid".

Well, you have the names, "John Wayne" (he is even complete with a
red bandana tied around his neck at one point.) "Wyatt Earp" and Marshall
"Van Cleefe".

The only tie in that I expected that was not there was someone
getting shot in the chest while wearing a piece of metal under their
shirt...

But it was there. When the marshall gets shot at the end, he opens his
coat to show that the bullet hit his badge. But it went through instead
of being stopped, and he died anyway.

- "Annie Hall" -peace pipe scene/cocaine scene
- "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" - Owen Wilson's entire character,
slow-mo running out of the church at the end
- Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns - the fact that the evil sheriff's last name
was "Van Cleef"
- "Maverick" - bathtub scene
- "The Frisco Kid" - The entire plot is a rehash of this movie, in which Gene
Wilder is the "fish out of water" (rabbi) and Harrison Ford is the outlaw

Haven't seen this one, so I was reminded more of the hanging escape in The
Good, The Bad & The Ugly. The showdown with the Marshal's posse reminded me
a bit of that movie too.

Mexican standoff originated from John Woo movies? Fuck that.

Fuck this too.
