Just curious. Was talking to a friend who lives in Hawaii...

Has there ever been a drum corps show in the state of Hawaii? If so,
who played, and when did it happen? I can't think of any but maybe
someone else may know.

Also, what other states has their NOT been a drum corps show? I can
maybe think of: Alaska and that's about it. But maybe so. Then there
are the U.S. Territories.... Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico....

Thanks,

Roger

I'm not sure whether or not they have ever had a competition or not, but both
Alaska and Hawaii had Drum and Bugle Corps in the 60's, maybe into the 70's.I
can only remember one of the Corps names, "Corps of the North" from Fairbanks,
Alaska. I'm sure there are others out there who have better records of these
things, anything to add, Ron!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm heading over Hawai'i way in the near future. Plan to go visit Harry's
Music Store in Honolulu. Harold Chang is their resident percussionist, and
was Arthur Lyman's long time percussionist back in the "exotica" music days
of "Yellow Bird", "Quiet Village", "Taboo", etc. He played some with
Martin Denny, too. I'll ask around there if anyone remembers any Hawai'ian
corps.

Here's a handy list of the corps that were (courtesy VKGarry, but I
think he found it elsewhere):

Boy Scout Troop 212
C.A.P. Cadets Juniors
St Elizabeth's Cadets - Aiea
St Patrick's Cadets - Honolulu
Camp Smith's Fleet Marine Force Corps
St Louis HS Crusaders
Explorer Post 71 - Koolau
First Marine Brigade
Islanders (St. Elizabeth's Cadets) - Honolulu
Kaliki
Na-Ka-Alii King's Guard - Mililani town
St John's Knights - Honolulu
Maryknollers - Honolulu
McAdams
Pacific Paradise Cadets (50th State Diamonds) - Oahu
R.O.T.C. High School
St Rich's Catholic Church - Kahuku
St Rochester

Nice people at Harry's.

I am frequently in Hawai'i... Last year a man named Bobby Derracotti.. came
up to me at the Aloha Week Parade.. and gave me his scrapbook from the days
of drum corps in Hawai'i... First let me answer the first part of the
question... Can't remember which year... but the American Legion Nationals
were held in Honolulu in the early 80's and the Los Angeles Chinese
Imperial Dragons and the Third Generation Japanese American Corps both did
travel to Honolulu for the Nationals.. Also the Lions International
Convention was held in the 80's in Hawai'i.. and I believe there was a field
contest... someone with Madison Scouts let me know if they indeed travel to
Hawai'i for the contest..
Finally, there is (was) a Buddhist organization or church, known as the
Nichiran Shoshu Academy.. they existed all across America.. each of their
temples or academies has a drum & bugle Corps, a girls Fife and Drum Corps
and uniformed drill teams... They held their world convention in Honolulu
in 1976 (I believe) and had about 20 drum & bugle corps affilliated with
their churches compete.. The Parade on Kalakaua Avenue featured a Guiness
world record Color Guard which had 10,000 American Flags, plus 10,000
working flags... The parade lasted 12 hours.... The organization also had
one of the most amazing flash card sections in the stadium with about 15,000
people making all kinds of pictures using flash cards similar to those at
football games.... I am going to look at my collection of program books to
find that book.. It was startling to see these people in action... The last
remnant of that NSA is the 'Kings Guard" drum & bugle corps from Honolulu..
they were a regular participant in the Aloha Week Parade until just a few
years ago.....
Bobby Derracotti's scrapbook told the story of the CAP drum & bugle
corps, the Kamehameha ROTC drum & Bugle Corps and St. Elizabeth's drum &
bugle corps. A story in the Honolulu Star Bulletin had photos of the drum &
bugle corps BUS loaded with kids heading out to a parade... what was
unusual was that the top of the bus from the windows up had been sliced off
so the kids would be seated in their seats and ride open air in uniform to
the events...the bus was last seen just a year ago in a junkyard for
vehicles in Honolulu... I have the article in my files and had promised it
to Steve Vickers when I got back...
Many of Hawai'i's top marching bands are 'corps style' and each year
members of Hawaiian bands come to the mainland to march in such corps as the
Madison Scouts, Mandarin and Vanguard.
