Saugus High School
21900 West Centurion Way
Saugus CA 91350
Time: 7:30pm
We are very grateful to the administration of Saugus High School,
especially Mr. Mark Overdevest, for hosting our rehearsals this week
at
their facility, and welcoming us with open arms.
Everyone is invited, and admission if FREE...........can't beat that.
ARE YOU READY FOR VK IN '08? VK IS READY FOR YOU!!!!
I'm ready for a video of this on YouTube! ;-)
Jackie
I should be able hear it from my house, as I live only a couple of block
from the school. Cool....
David White
Jackie
Really!
Their practice begins at 12:00.
Make sure you say hello to the corps. Bring your family!
Nancy
I will stop by for a bit during the day. Too bad I have to work tomorrow
night. I will send my mom and my daughter in my steed. Nancy, I almost
expect to see Mom Smith there. A VK practice without her somewhere near
wouldn't be the same.
David White
I think they will have fun watching the corps show.... and it's great
that you can take some time out of your day to visit. Be sure to make
yourself known, go to where the trucks and canopy are and say hello to
Mayra and Troy. You'll feel very welcome here.

I know what you mean.
Discussions have been made about "reunion" get-togethers for shows.
It has been decided that the reunions will take place where ever the
corps is. I couldn't think of a better place to meet up with old
friends than to be surrounded by your alumni corps.
If you are planning on going to the Brea show this Saturday (6-21) and
you want to know where the corps will be practicing you can sign in at
the alumni site for future show dates or drop me a line and I'll do my
best and let you know.

You're going to send your mom and daughter inside a horse? You cruel,
heartless bastid; don't you realize how hot it gets in there?
JB,
At my house yesterday, in the blazing sun, it was 114. I believe the
temps of a horse and at my house (let alone theirs and at the field),
are comparable.

They will be in the shade. And , I'm gonna put my wife in there too. It's
about 107 out here today, and the kids are bustin' it. Nice to see all the
VK alum workinjg with the corp. And the staff seems to really care about the
kids, the corp, and the show.
I want to hear your what your wife said about the show tomorrow!
CORP*S* David! CORPS! Attention to detail, my boy!

...prolly cooler in Alabama, eh?! Actually, tho, Zorb, it's damn hard
to find a place to practice nowadays. That, the almighty buck and
Housing is gonna be the final straw for many groups...

Amen!

The word "Corps," in our nomenclature, isn't an abbreviation for
anything, Joey...it is, first and foremost, used to describe a segment
of an Army with common function: as in Army Corps of Engineers, or
the more broad Marine Corps. I don't believe the word "Corps"
associated with the Velvet Knights, on or off the truck, ever had a
period following it unless it was the end of a sentence.

Then maybe?,
"Its just another fragment?!?!?!,...., of my imagination!!!..."

Zorb.
You would've been proud of VK tonight. The hornline sounded great.
Wish you could've been there. Will you just come on over to a
rehearsal before a show? Say... before the Long Beach. Lots of old
(ok... vintage/prime) alumni are gathering before the show. I
suggested to be where the corps is warming up or rehearsing. Rather
than at a show which you'd rather not attend, how 'bout at the school
while the corps is doin' run throughs?
I'll keep you posted to the time/place.
Nancy
Zorb,
I talked to several members of the staff for a couple of hours on
Friday. They are some of the "Old Time" drum corps people who marched in the
late 70's and early 80's. The feeling that I get is that they are trying to
present some of the past in this years show. I think I can I can say, when
compared to the Div I marching bands, VK is is a Drum Corps.
David White
Jackie
Heh! Well I don't wear hats, but I'll give a wave of my "freak-flag"
to salute what VK are putting on the field this year. I didn't expect
to like it as much as I did, after watching the video from the Brea
show. Although quite small, this year's VK are very much in the
tradition of the very-popular VK of the 80s and 90s. And amazingly I
concur with David White: "VK is is a Drum Corps."
Guess I'll have to acquiesce to attending one o' these newfangled
corps shows. But I'll wear my Fresno Ferns t-shirt!
Go to YouTube to see the show. It's not complete. The closer wasn't
shown, the gags aren't all in, the uniforms will be seen at the next
show. Holes due to member injuries although we still have one
trumpet, one mello and one bari spot open.
Could use a few more talented guard members too.
Um, I play bari, amI too old?????
I'll be like Al Rokker and let the wind blast me around.
:-)
Jackie
Going to any more shows David? I'd like to introduce you to the bari
line.
They'd love to say hello to a fellow bari vet.
(BTW, Video removed:(
Jackie
It wasn't a DCI event. It was an exhibition show.
Oh well. Go to a show, meet the kids and staff and have fun.

Thanks, Joey. I appreciate your honesty! :-)
I just hope?,
"You liked the VK1976.mp3!!!,...., I still get a little
upset about that year,...., the year previous (1975), is
when I graduated into the VK (me and about 40 other
Squires, with lots of experience), and when we came into
the VK?!?!?!,...., most of everyone any good from 1973 and
74, quit and joined into the Blue Devils,
Santa Clara Vanguard or Anaheim Kingsmen!!!,...., back to
the top, if everyone from 1974 didnt quit and go else
where?!?!?!,...., Velvet Knights of 1976
would've been DCI Champions!!!..."
Yeah?,
"You (JB), Charlie Groh, Bernie Reyes, Joe Lintz, Gary Lee
Ron ?Zaughn?, the rest of the Corps, me and about
40-Squire grads (maybe more), got cheated out of what we
all had coming!!! (1976 DCI Championship),...., and a lot
of you VK Staffers helped the Squires out alot, getting us
ready for 1976!!!,...., its really too bad that in 73 and
74, anyone who could afford taking off to the 'other corps,'
had to QUIT on us!!! (for the 75 season)..."
(I have been, and felt (feel), betrayed)
Dont believe it?,
"Listen to the Velvet Knights Horn line?!?!?! (1976),....,
nothing but a bunch of 14 and 15-year old players!!!,....,
(http://www.coloneljake.com/media/VK1976.mp3)
sure, there's a few Martins, Sapiens, Mannings,
maybe even a few Whites, but those folks,
were real close to age'n'out!!!..."
(except for maybe David White
(and Tim Sapien))
I guess?,
"I'm just crazy for even thinking that way?!?!?!,...., but
I played my azz off in teh Squires for 5-years getting
ready to come into The Velvet Knights!!!,...., and when I
came in?!?!?!,...., it was VK, all from 'SCRATCH!!!.'.."
(it sure wasnt the corps I saw in the 1970 thru 74)
Sorry?,
"If this poast is a little upsetting?!?!?!,...., but thats
about as honest, as I can get!!!..."
You sure are?,
"One of VK's finest - Jim Blansett!!!..."
