...I gotta stick up for my buddy Mike McCool who came up with the
musical design for SCV's show (they've been doing it in 3 year
chunks...I know he did the last two chunks)...they go after the
*music* and certainly don't "copy" any high school band...it's a
"rendition" thing, Mikey (if drum corps in general were to try to
choose something *not* done by high school bands they'd be still
looking...;0)...dehype brother!
cg
I agree... there are several cutting edge bands out there that have
explored many genres that Drum Corps has not. For example - Hammonton
HS in Hammonton, NJ for one... Besides, this reminds me of early
Garfield with their "male" dancer not SCV...
...not to mention that corps seem to be going to more
audience-accessable programs lately, *lots* of stuff has been
re-hashed over and over...not that I'm complaining, all that no melody
brass ensemble stuff needs to go back to where it's really
appreciated; in an auditorium.

Hmmm. Two versions of Agent huh, bro? Running 'em on different
machines?
Ha! That explains why the show was not memorable, but nothing from 2009
was memorable.
Going back to 2008.
Jackie
> nothing from 2009 was memorable.
I'll always remember 2009 as the year George Hopkins got locked in a
closet during a creative staff meeting, during which he could be heard
(all the way to Concord) screaming, "NO - I GOT IT GUYS! CHAIRS!
LET'S DO A SHOW ABOUT CHAIRS!"
Stuart E. Rice
...heh, yup. Maybe the name's right now!

Actually, i liked cg betterer...
Several things stuck out in my mind.
There isn't a band in this world that would have attempted ANYTHING
like that band did without drum corps. That shoots your theory
Charles. Drum corps influenced BAND. Without a doubt.
BTW? Where was a flag, rifle or saber? I don't like looking at fat
girls attempting to "dance".
The music?
Sorry... High School Bands didn't ATTEMPT the music displayed in that
video until drum and bugle corps made it easy.

I was a 3rd rate hack in band until I joined corps and after one
summer I jumped to 1st section and a leadership position and on up the
ladder.
My concert bands were always judged to be "too damned loud" yet at
the same time those bando judges were asking me how I was able to get
such a huge BALANCED sound.
My field shows WERE old corps style and a horn line that played fairly
well but with a sound twice their size.
I find the evolution from bands doing corps style, to corps doing band
style, to whatever this crap today is ( not everyone) a shame.
DCI corps are just bands that put the woodwind parts in the pit. Had
they kept the idenity of the G horns and color GUARD I could have
accepted the UNamped pit. Now pits are just too damned loud !

...Sharon, I'm not talking in the past tense at all...I *know* HS
bands have been influenced by corps and have made that point all
along, don't you read my posts? The very reason HS bands now are so
good is *because* of drumcorps, not in spite of it. My point was
simple but I'll spell it out: there are *so many* high school bands,
*so many* writers making a buck doing books for these bands, that
tunes are practically worn out! Hence the "rendition" word you seem
to have missed...

Well, there's not so many drumcorps these days. And many times there
have been corps performing at least ONE tune that some other corps is
performing that SAME season. One of my first years at DCA there were
like 6 corps performing a rendition of summertime that year. Looking at
the DCI champions, how many variants of malaguena, west side story, yada
yada yada... Didn't DCI put out a champions CD on one of those
anniversaries (25th? 30th?)? All of the 1st place finishes and there
were only a half a dozen or so tunes between those corps. There's worn
out, and then there's *worn* out.
In HS, it's understandable, you have a fresh crop of members every four
years. So you could cycle through the same book every four years and
never have the same people playing a tune that they've already played
with that group. But in corps? Not that 7+ year vets are common in Jr's
these days. But in all-age corps there's some corps with active
performing members who've been with the corps for many decades.
The funny thing to me is: For all the whining about the "Good Old
Days" it was common for Drum Corps to not only play the same songs
year after year, it was quite common for them to retain a "Theme song"
forever... As in Moria for the Hurricanes or the "Rumps" for
Hawthorn...Old Lang zine for the Kilties and so on. That's called
history. The fans want Madison to play Malaquenia (SP?) and the
Cadets to play West side story or the Troops to play Ghost
riders...it's what puts some asses in the seats.
Hope this helps,
George
P.S. SCV had the best DC show on the field this year. Just plain DC
with no bullsh*t...nicely done and very classy once again...
I agree about SCV and was very interested in finding this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEvcP-vXk4M
This was my first time seeing this original performance and very
educational for me.
I was disheartned when I saw the high school clip from 2004 when I
was searching for "Ballet For Martha" just as I was dishearted to find
that the "door" show for Cadets was basically a copy of a high school
band. I was just trying to do my disheartning equally
applied :-)
...I agree, there's tons of stuff out there an audience can/could
relate to...alot of it in the public domain ('cause everybody wants a
buck, doncha know). You're right 'bout the HS thing too...one of my
directors pulls out an 8-year old show and dusts it off and maybe
updates a bit here and there...presto, good stuff for new kids. Drum
corps do the same thing, although not to that degree...alot of you are
too young to remember when you'd just change a tune or two from year
to year... this new-fangled concept of a brand-new show every year is
really kinda "modern."
cg
...her-her...I gotta learn to read ahead, eh?!
cg
Nothing back the facts...;]
George
Neither am I. I'm saying that.. that BAND wouldn't have existed (in
this youtoube video) without DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS. And people seem to
think that THAT band has perfected BAND.
THEREFORE.. drumcorps is no longer relevant.
I *know* HS

Really? You do? Really?

Really missed "IT". You were REALLY defending your friend who
designed a show that BAND... DID. Whether or not Mike McCool got any
dividends is another matter.

Hell yeah... I'd like to see ONE more corps do the LAST springs BAND
music.!
Sharon
Wrong excuse for your arguement.
Until those corps played THEIR music that you wrote about? It
wasn't. BANDOS spit it out. OVER AND OVER AND OVER.
That's not on Drum Corps.
A fan of drum and bugle corps will be willing to listen to ANY
sound... as long as it FITS!
A great corps can PLAY anything. If they are GREAT!
BULLSHIT arguement.

PPS: If YOU say so? Wasn't that your arguement in the first place?
Says who? Nobody but you...;] It's my mine...get your own or add
something intelligent to it.

It wasn't what? Try to write like an adult so I can read it. Yeesh...

You just contradicted yourself in 25 words or less...nice job:)

It's "argument" dumb-ass and yes your argument is Bullshit...it always
is.
George
It was... a particularly.. wrong EXCUSE. And I've added many EXCUSES
too.
The intelligent part? You've done YOUR particular DAMANGE on the
intelligent part.

Really? I think that you made it IMPOSSIBLE for ANY poster that was
SCARED of YOU...
ME? Not so much.
