My little sister, 14, wants to play snare and is being discouraged by friends,
as is constantly being made fun of by the male drummers in her band. During
parking lot warmups at Riverside, CA, last night, she was excited to see a
female snare drummer in both BK and SCV.

She would like to write the SCV member and seek advice. Does anyone know her
name and any background info on her? Thanks in advance!

My darling wife Dianna, who witnessed her first drum corps competition ever
last night and is now "one of us," saw this and says "Tell your little
sister not to listen any of that crap, she can rock on any axe she likes!"
One of the things that impressed her so much about our activity last night
was the great number of chicks rockin' the pit sections. I explained to her
that that's 'cause they're mostly the ones that had piano lessons, but she
don't care, she thought all those girls rockin' makes drum corps as cool as
anything, just like Norah Jones (and nobody is cooler than Norah Jones in
her eyes....)

Believe me, she totally gets it, we have made a convert, she's still raving
about Blue Devils last night....and BTW she NEEDS to see a video of 1989 SCV
but the only thing that comes up on Kazaa is some crazy video/laser show
looking thing with the SCV audio, anybody know where to get the PBS video?
Preferably for free, but, hey, we created a fan here, so we're open....

Try sending an email to the corps' percussion caption head. That should get it
into the hands of the right person.

Well, Jack, I hope I don't regret doing this but I have the tape of '89 SCV
that I'll ***LOAN*** you to further sink the hook in your wife's gills.
That show should definately get her in the boat. But you must agree to
return it in good shape of course.

Email me for details and we'll do what's necessary...

Bluecoats snare captain is a girl also. They had a girl in the bass line last
year too.

Well, Dan, thank you very much for this offer, but I think it's like they
say about books...if you lend a friend a book, you're liable to lose both.
As we are both drum corps folks, you and I are friends who simply haven't
met yet, so I don't want to take the gamble, I know that tape is important
to you. We will find it, but thank you again. And you know what ?
She's already REELED IN, buddy!

Thanks , pal

Jack, the download you have should work, but you will need to obtain a Divx
player. Simply playing it in Windows Media will give you that fancy light
show.

Hey,
Her name is Tori and shes really good! Next time you see her go talk to her !
I got to speak to her last night and she is really nice. Im sure she will give
you any info you want to know. Your best bet is to wait till after the show
and look for her at the SCV bus.

I do recall seeing a female member in their snareline in '95. There
was another year ('99?) where there was one in the tenor line.

You may get a chance to see her again if you go back to the second
Riverside show (if they are there again).

well. The girl in BK's line is their center snare. Her name is Jen.

..I know people in both drumlines.. If your little sister will be at
the lot for the Glendora show, I can get her introduced to those
girls, and she can talk to them..

Sorry I dont know her, but I can give her some encouragement! I
started out as a snare drummer, and was the first female snare drummer
at my high school in 1985. No big deal, but this band was run like a
military academy, and I held my own.

I went on to march in Senior Corps, with the Steel City
Ambassadors...playing snare drum in a drumline with an average age of
probably 35. I went on to teach many good drumlines. If I had a
dollar for every girl that came up to me and said "my mom wont let me
play the drums, but I want to.", I'd be rich!

Two things I did learn was to be the best MONSTER player you can, and
also develop you cursing vocabulary. That way when the high school
kids give you grief, you can tell them to kiss your ass!

I cant believe that boys still give girls grief about playing drums!
BTW, I played ice hockey, and NEVER got shit from anybody.

Her name is Erin, and she also marched in Rhythm X (WGI Independent
World Percussion), which also had another female in the snare line
named Jen.

I have a 5-person snare line in my drum corps this year (Phoenix--DCI
Division III)--2 of them are female, and they have some decent chops.

To all women that are either marching snare, toms, bass or cymbals
this summer: you go, girls!!

Jeez..when did the Bluecoats start letting females in their
battery???? I remember when I was 'of age', being turned off by them,
because they (supposedly) didnt let females in their lines. This
would have been around 1988-1992.

BTW, when I was cut from Steel City's snare line in mid-season 1990,
it was said by one of the senior drumline instructors that "no girl
will ever march in this drumline ever again." He was right; the corps
folded within 3 years.

I am guessing the mentality has changed.....

Yeeeeeaaah! Goin strong still...but playing bari now, and have been. I
very much miss the feeling of warming up before a show, and seeing
people pointing at me (and not laughing!)

Oh, and if you are wondering what kind of monster-chicks play
drums....I used to model when I was younger!

Remember back in the early 80's watching SCV's line play, and there was
a chick playing snare! VERY impressed! But CENTER snare in BK??
Wowsers. That IS impressive! And I hear their line is doing great this
year. The corps I was in had a girl that played timbales and one that
played bassdrum, and it wasn't the little guy, either. We were in a
parade one time, she passed out and rolled right over the drum!

Think the Erie TBirds had one in the late 70s. If not them then the Hanover
Lancers, I'm pretty sure she had a green uniform.
