Which brings us back to---Just why do shows have to have titles in the
first place?

It's easier to recognize the show title than it is the tunes

Amen to that! I've been saying so for years. I was a member of the 85
Regiment that did Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz and 87 Regiment that did
the "White Ballets" of Tchaikovsky. That was OK. So was the Romeo and
Juliet in 88. Why? Because that's what the shows were!
When PR and others started going for a theme every time, I was very
disappointed. Never again was I to see BD with just 'jazz' from wherever
or Cadets with a little of everything like 86.

My disappointment goes beyond corps' just having a theme. Since most every
corps feels they have to have a "title" ergo a "theme", it limits the entire
show for the show designers. Now if they have a bad idea, it's the whole
show (see Blue Devils '90 "Tommy" IMHO). Before (and hopefully again soon)
a show could still
have a great first half and the last half stink (see Bridgemen 80'IMHO).
Ah well, I'm not in too much of a ranting mood.

Uh, that last half of Bridgemen '80 brought the frickin house down!!!
The South winning the war IN Birmingham! If you didn't like that, you
must not have a pulse!!

I would just like to see someone do three or four totally unrelated
pieces and call it "Just Good Stuff." But that would be too much like
the old days

Northwest Venture in fact does an UN-themed, mixed-bag show, including a
stand-alone drum feature.

We ARE a "good old days" corps! :)

How dare you put out a corps like that in these times of whatever they
are called!
Wish us could see you guys! :)
