anyone who marched velvet knights please respond to me. I am trying to get
ahold of the last corps director, this is in hopes to reconstruct the corps.
The corps however would be ran by The Imperial Legion Ed. Arts Association, but
would possibly retain the name Velvet Knights. PLEASE HELP me I would like to
re field this corps as soon as possible.

...which FYI, is in California in case you didn't know.

Might be hard to retain Velvet Knights with Impulse now.

You are referring to Tom Hixon. He is now the band director at Palmdale High
School in Palmdale, California. He still has the equipment truck and some of the
old equipment from what I hear. As far as getting the rights to the Velvet Knights
name, if the folks from Impulse couldn't get it, then I don't think there will be
much of a chance. The Impulse staff is all former VK staff and members. Long time
VK director Jack Bevins is on the Impulse Board of Directors. I am not sure what
the hang up with the name is, but the powers that be don't seem to want to release
it. I'm sure Ryan Turner will chime in on this thread, he might have better
answers than what I have.

Yeah it is Tom Hixon and he is the band director at Palmdale HS in the Antelope
Valley. They do have the semi and 1 other truck (food truck maybe) up at the
school. Anyway - good luck.

Man....good luck pulling VK back together. Always was one of my fav corps and
one of the reasons I started marching.....I just hope you guys keep it the way
VK used to be. There are enough artsy fartsy/boring corps out there right now.
Maybe VK could help bring some entertainment back to DCI.

I didn't know corps had rights to names. Lots of corps have the same name.
There are 2 Emerald Knights, there used to be 2 Flying Dutchmen, Lots of
different Knights, Cadets... Corps like a unique identity, but unless DCI
now controls names, there are already duplicates out there.

My bro-in-law went to Palmdale High and he lives off of Ave R. When I go
back there in late August I'll take a look and let you all know if the
equipment is there.

I see the old equipment truck at Palmdale High every time I drive past the
stadium. I have also seen what might have been VK's souvenier truck parked at
a home in Rosamond,CA about 20 miles north of Palmdale.

I moved to Palmdale in 1996 at that time I talked to one of the staff ( I think
he was any way) at a storage shed In Palmdale. I was Moving my stuff when I
saw the 30 or 40 VK bumper stickers on this guys car. I went over and talked to
him but I can't remember the name he gave me. Any way There were a few old
pistion rotor horns and a couple of beat up drums in the shed he was at. I
don't know if that stuff is still in that shed or not but I know the street it
was on ;o)

I would reccomend against using the VK name. You may have some creditors
knocking on your door.

I don't know if this Dakotah person is legitimate (is this the Kentucky
person??), but if this IS legitimate (swallowing my bitterness), please, for
the sake of all that is good and decent in the world of drum corps, do TWO
things for me.

1. Do NOT involve Tom Hixon in any business dealing or any other dealing
affecting drum corps. For the risk of being slanderous, I'll end it there.
You are free to do what you want of course, but I advise HIGHLY against it.

2. Let VK rest. The Velvet Knights CAN NOT be resurrected for there are a
LITTANY of legal reasons that have FULLY been investigated, and that name and
organization is under the IRS' thumb. The current director of Impulse, the
esteemed Dr. Dave Meade, is a lawyer, and has done MORE than his share of due
diligence in the investigating of this issue. Philosophically speaking, from
someone who bled black, red and white, and wore high top converse tennis shoes
to CHURCH for crying out loud...the VK was a special and unique "character"
within the world of drum corps that CAN NOT be recreated. Impulse is NOT a
recreation of VK...it is for lack of better terminology, an evolution run by
former VK'ers that LOVED what they got with VK and are hoping to improve on
what VK did. To further compare that two organizations is not fair as far as
I'm concerned, and certainly, the integrity and character of the staff of
Impulse is OUTSTANDING and their accomplishments with those students speaks for
them and ITself...not as a "oh look at the corps trying to be VK". For me to
further discuss this wouldn't be fair either because I'm nowhere near as
familiar with nor as close as I probably should be with the Impulse
organization, and so I can't be "their spokesman" so to speak. I CAN say as a
thoroughly trained fan that I LOVE Impulse, and I LOVED VK.

VK is gone, and it will be forever. Please, whoever you are, be original, and
don't try to raise the dead.

THERE!! How's that for a chime in, Dave??? :-)

Ditto.

No one could re-create the VK without the right people - even if all the
other issues were settled.

Look to your new group of people, and discover the corps within and between
them. You'll have a better chance at something that can grow and last.

Impulse is its own new thang...

To echo Ryan's sentiments, it would be best to walk away from this idea. Many
former members would prefer to remember the corps in their own way.

VK was a unique collection of personalities, both membership and staff. It
would be difficult, at best, to recreate the magic that was VK.

Speaking of Magic, why not put your efforts into helping Magic of Orlando get
back into the competitive arena? You list them in your profile on AOL. Were you
a former member of Magic?

I will join ranks with my VK brothers and sisters in requesting that you
abandon this idea.

Regarding the last director, why would you want to be associated with someone
who couldn't keep the corps alive in the first place?

I never marched VK - although my first time holding a G bugle was at a VK
audtion, I would also echo Ryan's comments. Although I do not know Mr.
Hixon, I can tell you that there can be a lot of bad vibes associated with a
corps' name and reputation. Look at Bridgmen. When they came back for a
season in '87 (I saw them in Rome, NY) it was a nice attempt, but that
special "Bridgemeness" was gone, even though theie entire show was old
Bridgmen favorites. Unfortunately, this is the image I remember, instead of
the wonderful stuff from earlier years.

One reason we changed my small corps' name from Nightfire to Matrix in our
last year of operation was because we felt there was a bad rep attached to
Nightfire. (It should be pointed out that the Nightfire from Los Angeles -
my corps - is in NO WAY associated with Night Fire from North Dakota. The
choice of a name was coincidental and there is no connection between teh two
groups).

Instead of resurrecting VK, give your corps it's own name and identity. Do
the funny stuff if you wish...there's room for more than one comedic corps.

Though I am not a lawyer, as for the rest, my dear brother Ryan speaks the
gospel. Before creating Impulse we had hoped to ressurect VK. The impediments
were too many and too great. At that time VK had only been gone less than two
years. Now, however, four years later all of our VK baggage is nicely packed
and tucked away. We prefer to remember it as an entertainment phenomenon,
bigger than life and unique unto itself. Thirty years of character and history
cannot be reproduced, any attempt would result in a golem, a soulless
mechanation calling itself VK, but unquestionably "not" VK.

Build your drum corps, the activity is in need. Dedicate yourself to
entertaining the audience, the activity really needs this. But, create
something different.

Best of luck,
