Found this bio on Fred at the Yamaha site:
Fred Sanford
Fred Sanford is widely recognized as one of the foremost authorities in
marching percussion. He currently serves as Educational Product
consultant for the Band and Orchestral Division of the Yamaha
Corporation of America.
Perhaps best known for his involvement with Drum and Bugle Corps
International, Fred has held positions with several national champion
units including the Santa Clara Vanguard, Madison Scouts, and the
Concord Blue Devils.
A popular percussion clinician at music education workshops, Fred has
presented educational programs throughout North America, Europe, and
Japan.
Recently, Fred has become interested in electronic application by
integrating sound reinforcement and MIDI into the marching band program
and now serves as advisor for the Audio, Guitar, and Synthesizer
Division of Yamaha. Fred Sanford plays the SFZ/Field-Corps marching
drums.
God Bless You, Fred! You were one of the best!

I remember when he judged me in marching band and I still have a copy of
his comment tape. I also had the pleasure of meeting him in person at
several drum corps shows and at the Texas Music Educators and Texas
Bandmasters Conventions. His voice is forever etched in my mind.
He has touched the lives of thousands of people in the drum corps and
marching band activities. He will be greatly missed.

Before you buy.
Gang-with so much rumor/speculation abounding about Santa Clara
Vanguard...SOMEBODY needs to post something beautiful about this Corps.
Please post Fred's biography?????
I think it would be appropriate.

Here's the URL to Fred's biography on the Yamaha website:

MAV has posted the text of that bio here in this thread, but the web
page also includes a picture of Fred. I didn't know him personally,
but given others' descriptions of him, it seems as if his personality
shines out even in this photograph.
Also, I don't see anything in the bio that Fred was a Troopers
alumnus.
I have a '78 Santa Clara yearbook that has a picture of Fred and the
rest of the staff members, but unfortunately it doesn't say much about
the staff members, themselves. Mainly, it describes what changes were
going on in the percussion style for that year, etc.

Nor that he was Garfield's drum instructor in 1972, when he was band
director at Bergenfield HS in NJ.
He judged our band last fall in a USSBA show, and I had the chance to
renew an acquaintenance with him after the show; I'm glad I had that
opportunity!

I never had the opportunity to meet Fred personally, yet I still feel a
profound since of loss. One has to wonder how much different this activity
would be today, had it not been for him. Whether through his own teachings,
or those of the people he influenced, Fred Sanford made a difference in
thousands of lives. That, my friends, is quite a legacy. Goodbye, and God
bless you (and your family) Fred.

I consider myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to have met Fred
when he did a clinic and critique for the Blue Knights back in 84.
I would like to submit for consideration the idea of making the DCI High
Percussion Trophy a memorial to Fred Sanford.

Great idea Floyd. Any DCI bigwigs reading this?
It is already in the works...
