I would have to vote for Jonathan Miller (Glassmen DM 94-97)
His conducting pattern is very easy to read, and he has a good head on his
shoulders. He always knew what was going on. During rehearsal, he knew what
every section was doing, what they were playing, and where they were in the
drill at all times. He was awesome.

There is no way to really answer this question unless you
have marched in several corps. Then, you could only
comment on those DM's.

A drum major is responsible for getting the corps up in the morning,
coordinating ensemble rehearsals during the day, getting the
corps the daily schedule, making sure everyone is ready on time,
getting the corps on the road at night, telling the corps where
to sleep and shower, and getting the corps to bed.
In uniform, they must represent the corps to the public and to
DCI.

This is not something you can see by watching them conduct
a show at night.

Agree with person who wrote JIMMY RUSSO (Caballeros) forever.... But then, I
am a loyal former Caballero, and despite never having marched when Jim was in
charge; name one other person who has that phenomenal energy?
Then ther's Joe Reichert; (who?) Cadets '95... O.K. maybe he wasn't great,

As has been noted by Barry, I can't comment on the other roles of a drum major
which may quite possible be more important than what they do on the field.
However, I will put in a vote for a few based on their conducting ability.
Note: I intentionally do not rank these guys(and girl). Conducting is, even at
it's best, an imprecise (in terms of measurement of ability) art form, and much
of what makes us like certain conductor is simply a matter of individual style.

-Jimmy Russo

-Kristy Spears....in fact, all of PR's DMs could go on this list, they are
always excellent.

-Mike McKee (from Magic 97....good style, and the quintessential performer)

I'm with you - Al Go was definitely one of the most exciting I've ever
seen.

Also good on the field (although, as the comments have said, I haven't
any knowledge of their off-field accomplishments), I feel were Chris
Buck (CBC '89-'90) and the guy with the blond hair from Freelancers (OK,
he wasn't the best technical conductor I've ever seen, but he sure was
exciting!)

You nailed it Barry. I've seen some DMs who could arguably conduct a major
symphony orchestra but can't get their corps to the practice field on time.An
effective DM is a complete package. Some corps seem to consistantly turn out
quality DMs and I think this is an indicator of the quality of corps tradition
and spirit that is passed down. Match that with natural leadership ability and
conducting talent and you get one of the greats.>A drum major is responsible

Kristy Spears, Phantom Regiment 1995-1997 drum major. Yes, I know she was
backfield conductor in 1995.

Tony Rother, Madison Scouts 1995 (?) to 1996. He was baritone from previous
years before his drum major appearance.

Bob Guinn, Madison Scouts 1997-1998. He was a bassline member in 95 and 96.

Spirit of Atlanta's drum majors 80-87 or so.. they were always good, but I do
not remember the names.

Hi Donny,

This thread has had a couple of lives going on. I'm positive I mentioned him in
one of them. Yes, Skyliners were VERY fortunate to have two of the greatest
DM's back to back. "Wink" from 1959 through 72, then the passing of the mantle
to Butch and his service from 1973 through 92. He would still be there if it
weren't for his untimely death due to a brain tumor.

We've heard of the responsibilities of a drum major on this thread, and I agree
with most those responsibilities as being appropriate. Having had the honor of
serving as Wink's assistant DM in '67 and '68, and Butch's assistant DM in '77
and '78, I can attest to the respect that was afforded them both, but in an
entirely different context. One lesson I learned was; at indoor horn
rehearsal's, when Wink would send me down to the bar to call the hornline up
stairs for rehearsal, I would say "Horns,...upstairs". Nobody moved. When I
said, "Wink's said horns upstairs", I was nearly trampled in the stampede.
It wasn't as bad while serving under Butch, but when I indicated that Butch
wanted something done, everyone to a man would look in Butch's direction, he'd
nod his head, and they responded without question.

Good to hear from you again Donny. How was Milwaukee?

OK, from a more emotional take on this issue;
1. Freelancers DM in 83--total entertainment and control
2. Marcia Hanson, Regiment 84-85. total class
3. Eric Short, Crossmen 85 and Regiment 86. The best technique and
"presence" on the field.

OK...
As an aspiring DM... I can not choose the best DM, but I can comment on
performanes that I have seen and admired. No one is ever going to be as great
and holy a person to determine who the best really was and is for that matter.
All DM's have intelligence ( OK... Excluding some!! hehe=) , dignity, guts,
pride, and several other admirable qualities!

1.) Bob Guinn Madison Scouts 97
2.) Kristy Spears Phantom Regiment 95-97
3.) Jason Hamilton Phantom Regiment 97
4.) George N. Parks Reading Bucanneers
5.) James Gulke Blue Devils
6.) "Wink" Caballeros
7.) Jonathan Miller Glassmen 94-97
8.) Scott Rundall Glassmen 97- Present
9.) Jenny Grise Phantom Regiment 96
10.) SCV's DM in 97
11.) Cadets' Dm's in 97... wonderful!!
12.) Pete Weber Cavalier's 97

Most of these DM's were taken from recent Drum Corp performances but I
personally admire all Drum majors for what they do! They are all talented in
their own ways! Good luck this season to all ....

WOW, you most be one of those "old-timers" I keep hearing about. <G>
Wink did march with Hawthorne but that was back in 1955 and it wasn't as DM, it
was as a soprano. As a matter of fact he is also a member of the ultra secret
Caballero society, "The Wetbacks", El Presidente, Ralph Silverbrand; Presidente

Sorry Sal - gotta disagree. Smythe was much more of the
parochial stand-up-very-proper style of majoring, such as
a Ralph Silverbrand. What Butch learned from Winky was
that impish style of celebrity that drew the crowd closer to
the corps they were watching. Butch was much more of
a musician than was Winky, but Winky taught him how to
transfer that talent into emotion - and then to channel
that emotion to the corps. As you stated earlier - no offense.

I guess I am a bit prejudiced, but in DCA my favorite is my own
corps' Jim Russo. He has won many awards, has been the DM for the CABS
for over 25 years and shows the spririt of our corps everytime he gets
up on the podium. He has personality and the respect of most of the
other drum corps members. There are so many good drum majors that it
really is difficult to single out just one.

Guess I'm a bit prejudiced but in my opinion, Jim Russo is one of the
best DM in senior corps. He has won numerous awards, has been the DM of
the Cabs for over 20 years and demonstrates the spirit of our corps. He
is a well respected member of drum corps and a great leader of our corps.

There are many others too numerous to mention who deserve accolades as
well.
