I was just wondering if anyone else would agree that it would be very cool if
DCI extended it's age-out year to 23-24.......i know it's been talked
about....why not do it??????Perhaps if enough people come together an effective
petition could be drawn and sent....jsut a thought...comments??

I would support it. That would give me 2 extra years. That would be
awesome! I am all for it. Send that petition my way.

I've heard that the reason that hasn't been done is because it then ceases
to be a youth activity, at least for DCI.

I think it's a terrible idea. 23 or 24? If that's the case, just eliminate
it altogether because 24 ceases to be "youth" by a long shot.

Why? By the time you're that age you should be out in the work force
and have no time for the type of schedules most Jr. corps have.
It is a "youth" activity. 21 seems like a good spot to end the youth
classification.
However, Sr. corps wouldn't be a problem to most because we're just
weekends.

No, it wouldn't be cool. It's would be a horrible thing for
drum corps. By the time one is 21(22) they should be
out of college and in the work force/volunteering. Employers
do not like if someone they hire HAS to have to summer
off. Unless you want to work at McDonald's it ain't
going to happen. Plus how would your parents feel if you
decided still march, full-time, in the summer and not
get a job?? Personally, it wouldn't bother me if it was
until 21, but 24?? I think not.

Increasing the age is DCI's and band/art program around the
US desperate measure to try and keep they people they have.
It's for not knowing how to market itself.
If you do want to march beyond 21(22) there are senior
corps (though none in Mich.) which are designed for the
full-time worker...meaning weekends.

Taking it to a extreme, a bit, what power can a corps have
over it's "over 21" members from drinking yet still keeping
the corps in tack??

I'll give you one solid reason... our status as youth organizations would
be seriously in jeopardy... This may make some of the charity type fund
raising that the major corps (Like Cadets) do much more difficult...

Also, I'm sometimes bothered by the "drum corps bum" situation... I've
known far too many who have postponed college - even marriages and families
to do touring drum corps. At least with a 21 age limit they are forced to
begin their adult lives... anything older would aggravate this situation...

viva la difference... 21 works quite nicely...

When I am out of college I am going to be working/teaching. I will not
*still* be marching drum corps for the 8th time!

You know whats funny....
I'll be the first to say that every one of y'alls opinions is a great
one that no one else has; but perhaps we should read the othr posts
(besides the first one), before we post a messege. It appears that
almost every one of the post on this thread is exactly the same. We
all seem to agree that people should move on, but why doesn't everyone
just say, I agree. I dunno, it just find it redundant to have to read
the same post over and over again just under a different author.
Besides, even if DCI voted it in, It is not like you HAVE TO. It is
your choice! Personally i would march till I was 22, but that is me.
If you don't want to march eight years, don't. You know as many people
as me that have quit ahead of time.

That all depends on what system they are using to
read the newsgroups. AOHell is horrible when it comes
to Newsgroups. You're going to answer as soon as you
see the question. Sometimes it is good to have people
of the same opinion but not be influenced by previous
threads. Let them put it in thier own words. If we
were to allow just one person to speak for both sides
just think how boring it would be. How would you like it
if in a review for a show we get one person's opinion
about it and everyone just sits back and nods thier head?
I'd rather see a variety of people's responces then just
one. I do agree though about the people who say "yep
I agree" or "I disagree" without thier input. I would
call those boring.

Terri,

Not only that, but at what age do you think these "youths" should become
responsible adults??? Keep raising the age limit...sure...to 28? 29?

Give me a break. You wanna march after Jr corps, go to a senior corps.

sigh......the "youts" of today...what next...
