1972- Dick Robel [sp?] -three snares
1973- Dick Robel -five snares
1974- Dick Robel -seven snares
1975- Jim Westenberg or Scott Erbe -six snares

Properly, 1973-75 should read 5.5, 7.5 and 6.5... since we also
marched a concert snare.

Chris Toney was what you would call "center snare" in '78. The term we
used in those days was "Drum Sargeant". The term seems to have fallen
into disuse; I don't see anyone using it these days.

Being Drum Sargeant didn't necessarily mean that a person marched in the
center of the snare line. In fact, it didn't even mean that the person
was a snare drummer, although this was the norm. In Chris's case, both
distinctions applied. In many corps, it was a leadership position. For
example, the Drum Sargeant was expected to lead warm-ups or even run
rehearsal when there were no staff around.

I believe Chris was Drum Sargeant in '79 as well. Who knows, it might
have been a good career preparation...(inside joke)

Jeff's name is probably familiar because he is a DCI percussion judge now.
He also teaches at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He has an
article in the latest Percussive Notes for all you PAS guys.

Jeff Prosperie taught the drumline for many years (89-92 i believe) and then
became the caption head/arranger after Marty Hurley left in 92.. he then
arranged our music in 93 and 94, then split the arranging duties with Lee
Beddis in 95, though it was much more Jeff than Lee.. then Beddis took over
in 96.. and yeah, that's jeff talking about the percussion solo in 95 on the
videos..

The same thing still occurs in many corps today. Titles often used by corps are
Drum Captain, Percussion Captain, Section Leader, etc.

Jeff was a percussion arranger for Regiment in 1993, 94, and 95. I
think he was involved in previous years, but I don't know in what
capacity. That was Jeff in the 95 video talking about the percussion
feature, Piano Concerto #2, I believe.

Thanks for asking.. I've always thought that it would be great to somehow
allow the center snare or drum captain at Regiment to march for free as a
reward to all of the hard work that it takes to get there.. I'm not able to
completely sponsor the membership dues but I'm trying to set up a sort of
"Center Snare Club" that would provide for the current center.. we would all
put in a small amount and next year the center that we just paid for to
march would join us and everybody's amount would get smaller.. in order for
this to succeed I need to find out who all would be included and this is the
best way that i've been able to do it.. it might not work but i'm at least
going to give it a try! wish me luck! tim

Man, I love Scooter. He is the man. Every time he came to a rehearsal he would
point out something else that I missed and fixing it made the line SO much
better. I hope Mars Music is enjoying having him on their staff.......big loss

[Apparently section leaders have been promoted directly to Captain
without ever having made the rank of Lieutenant] ;-)

For Tim Fairbank's benefit I have to confess in public to what a lousy
memory I have. Chris Toney was indeed our Drum Sargeant in '78. But I
watched the video of our finals performance last night, and realized
that he was fourth from the right end in our snare line. The two center
snares (we had 10 total) in '78 were actually Bill Fortenberry and Greg
Gaitens. Fortunately for me Ken Mazur, Mike Wendel, and Brian Parquette
are not reading this thread or I'd never hear the end of it.
Hope that clears things up.

I can help fill in some blanks. Hurley made John Wooton section leader in 1982, I was standing there when he did it during Christmas camp. I made the snare line in 1982 but couldn't march that Summer do to illness.

In 1981, the section leader was either Chris Toney or Kennan Pituch, I'm not sure which.
