My first year in the Cavaliers (1989), I was exposed to "Rookie Talent
Night." The rookies have to work up a skit to perform for the rest of
the corps. They usually do the skits on an auditorium stage with the
rest of the corps in the audience. Due to our travel schedule, we had
to do it on the bus. The rookies get graded on uniforms, salute,
presentation, projection of sound, & togetherness. One particular group
was not prepared. The only thing that they had to wear that was similar
was their underwear. So they only wore their underwear (bad idea).
They then proceeded to sing the Star Spangled Banner... as their
skit... (another bad idea). Anyway, we were pulling into an oasis to
get gas just about the time that the horn sergeant "Scott Seal" ordered
the rest of the rookies to "get their shorts" for having such a rotten
performance. Now they were standing in the aisle in their b-day suits.
Scott said, "Since you have no act, I am giving you something to do...
You are to run around all 3 busses in your "uniform" (naked)." I could
not believe it... They did it. The funniest part about it was that it
was pitch black outside except for the flashes from cameras in the guard
bus!!

I've got another story that I'll post in a bit. Not quite as funny, but
just as embarrassing.

Shane.

Awww..... shit. I am a rookie this year. Do they still do this? (I kinda
hope so!) Seems like it would be fun.

I'm sure that they still do it. It's a pretty big thing. However, make sure
you do a good job, but not too good to get into the "finals" round. That's all
I'm saying... Also, I don't know how many years you can march, but I recommend
marching with the Cavaliers as long as you possibly can. I've marched with 3
different drum corps (Knights/Geneseo, Il. 85-87; Garfield Cadets 1988; &
Cavaliers 89 & 90) I think that the Cavaliers were the most fun to march with.
Great group of guys!

Yes, they still do it. I marched in 1997 and my brother marched last year.
The Talent night is near the end of tour so you can think of stuff to do and
get all of your props (AND BRIBES FOR THE VETS!!!!!! {this is very important})
The final Talent show is at the BOO party during finals week where the best
skits from each bus compete for the title. Good luck and have fun this summer.

I was in the Drum Bus skit that made "Finals" in 1982. Our "Prelims" were held
on the busses. We had a large time at the Boo Party, after our performance.
Good luck this summer!!!

Splooie!
