Hello,

My name is Chris Kunkel. To try out for drum major at my high school we
have to answer some questions. I was having trouble
with some of the following ones. I would appreciate any help you could
give. Thank you for your time.

1. who organized the first band after the revolutionary war and in
what City?

2. What was the first marching band in America?

3. What two instruments comprised this band?

4. What painting epitomizes the beginnings of marching bands in =
America?

5. Who introduced the first full scale band in the US in 1874?

6. What was the name of this band?

7. What two universities annually compete in the "battle of the bands"?
What is their beat per minute?

8. What universities band is known as "the show band of the south"?

9. What is a "touch of blue"?

10. Why does a band counter march?

Thank you!!

You have to answer those to audition for Drum Major? When I was drum
major, the interview was something like: How do you solve
quarrels...wow. Wished I could help...but if someone knows the answers,
send them to me, too...curiosity.

Question: What in the world does any of this have to do with leadership and
conducting skills?

Chris,

I don't know if I'm missing something here, but what do these questions have to
do with being a drum major?

That's the oddest tryout requirement I've ever seen, in 30 years involvement
with bands. What happened to leadership, conducting, and marching?

I believe that is SOUTHERN UNIV. and GRAMBLING ST. UNIV. Both predominately
black schools and have "high stepping" marching bands. It really isn't my
cup of tea, but they can be entertaining! The battle of the bands occurs
during halftime of the Bayou Classic. football game held in New Orleans.

I hope this is what you are looking for!
