I'm also writing this with my long-time friend and colleague Paul Rapp who
also marched in Cavaliers from 1972 until 1976.

There actually are several of RCYB (or "Van Nuys" for you Midwestern H.S.
Band Combine people reading :-) that read and are regular contributors to
the newsgroup. I marched tuba in RCYB 1976-1977 before I marched baritone
in Anaheim Kingsmen in 1978 and then traveled across the country to march
in North Star 1979 (euphonium) and 1981 (contra). Other RCYB alums in
cyberspace are (from most to least frequent contributors to RAMD):
Christina Mavroudis (Christina...@interactive.sony.com), an alum of
Granada Hills H. S. who marched percussion 1978 or 1979-1980 and then
marched in Blue Devils 1981. She has posted regularly on RAMD since it
started.
Dave White (da...@annex.com), from Verdugo Hills H. S., who is unusual in
having marched in drum corps (Velvet Knights) *before* joining RCYB,
played baritone horn 1976, 1977, and I forget when else. He posts about
once a month and has been on for about a year and half or two years.
Greg Ramsey is a very infrequent poster. Here's what he had to say in
response to Steven Handelman's post (courtesy of DejaNews):

My wife told me that there was recently a discussion of what (Van Nuys)
Royal Cavalier Band/Drum Corps alumni were on the Net.
I can't keep up with all the r.a.m.d discussions so I missed it, but I am
still here.
I marched RCYB/RCB from 1969 (just after Calgary) until the end of the
1976 Season.
I was a Baritone/Euphonium player.
On a side note, my wife is an alumni of the Whittier Elks Cavaliers, one
of our "crosstown" rivals.

His most recent post (about a relative who marched overage--I know
which relative and which corps, but won't say :-) shows that his email
address hasn't changed.
Joe Pincetich, trombone player from Notre Dame H. S., marched in RCYB
'76-'78 or '79 and later marched baritone in Freelancers 1980 and then in
SCV 1981, then taught M&M for Hollywood Knights and CSUN's band, has been
mentioned on here. A Hollywood Knights alumna, Sue Stoen (PDQBabe on
GlobalMUSH), wrote last year that she had been in email contact with him,
but he's never posted. Anyone heard from him? An SCV alum posted that he
ran D&D campaigns on SCV's buses during 1981. Any other D&D stories from tour?
There are RCYB alums that I keep expecting to see, but never do. One is
Darryl Spector, who marched cymbals in 73 or 74, then went on to found
(with Richard Kramer, another RCYB alum) the Avatar Winterguard. He was
into computers 20 years ago and would have thought that he would have been
on the net for quite a while now. If he is, he doesn't post, as Dejanews
shows no articles from him. :-(
Even so, there are more RCYB alums on RAMD than North Star alums--and
maybe even more RCYB alums than Kingsmen alums. Go figure!
As for RCYB itself...It was briefly a drum corps in 1983, when Rod Rankin
took over as director. It folded that summer. May it rest in peace.

This guy was my ride to rehearsals in 1976! WOW! Hey, Paul, how are
you doing? I'll forward my RAMD Bio to tell you what I've been up to!
Better yet, go to dejanews and do an author search on rvl...@umich.edu.
That will keep you busy for a while! :-D

As a baritone saxophone (almost as bad to march with as a contra or
euphonium!)

Hey, you're both on the cc list!

Of course, I may be afraid to show my text since I have

No, but I remember what a great foil line you had.

Richard is working with theWinter Guard Association of Southern
California, web site at <http://www.wgasc.com/>, and he has an e-mail
address listed there. John Combes is still band director at Notre Dame
High school in Sherman Oaks. Don Porter Jr. is an accountant in Bishop,
California. Darryl Spector still hangs around and helps at some the
Winter Guard shows in southern California. I remember competing against
them in parades for years, as a member of the Long Beach Junior Concert
Band. I went and saw them at the VFW Nationals, at East LA College in
1975, and they blew me away.

I remember our (VK) snares using Royal Cavaliers' snares, I believe they
were Premier double snares, for one contest here at home.
I too marched with RCYB back in the '70s. I started in the junior program
(the Royals) and then moved up to the full band the year the band did the
Alice Cooper concert. I played clarinet at that time as well.
I enjoyed the group so much, that I formed my own youth program here in
Burbank called the Black Knights Drum Corps. If you have seen the group
on the street, you will find the uniform hauntingly familiar. No, we do
not march orange and black, but the tunics and hats are pretty much the
same style.
I still keep in touch with John Combes (matter of fact some of my students
are freshmen in his band this year at Notre Dame) and it is wierd having
him judge my program in parades.
Talk about small world of RCYB alums, I found out that I guy (Tom
Zevin/drummer) who works at the same company I do played in RC at the
exact same time I did and that we both had moved from Royals into
Cavaliers at the same time. Small world.

Hey,
I never thought I would see a posting here about RCYB. Boy, do I
miss that band. We were damn good. I marched in the mid 70's and
played baritone horn. I was one of the few that made the jump from DC
to Band. I marched with VK in the early 70's.
