On of my favorite shows of all time.... Cadets 91. It was AWESOME, even
with the phasing problems in "Short Ride...." when I saw them that
year. What ticked me off was the fact that a bunch of folks who didn't
know "Short Ride..." at all got all bent out of shape because they
thought the woodblock was a "cheater" pulse.
The rest of the show was excellent as well. Bernstein's "Prelude, Fugue
and Riffs" was just amazing for its changes in musical character - a
perfect showcase for the Cadets abilities.
Well, I digress. Hope that answered the question.

To me, that was the neatest show they have ever done. At first when I saw
them early on tour, I hated it. But the more I saw it the more I liked it.
Be the time we got to Dallas for finals, I loved it. They did so many unusual
things that year...an opener without a melodic line... parking and blowing
(this is the Cadets???!!!).

One of my favorite shows of ALL TIME (surprise, surprise!)!! That year
was my last year in VK, and I was known to be hanging around Cadets alot
on tour. Ralph Hardimon, our Percussion Caption Head at VK at the time,
said that Cadets '91 was going to be the hardest show EVER put on the
field. I later found out from other Cadets that the show was an ensemble
NIGHTMARE, but to me they pulled it off well by Finals. For a case in
point, check out after the Contras are starting the 4 on 3 (in "Short
Ride..") and the basses play their break, they run back field past the
back hash, meanwhile the snares are just starting their break after
dropping their tenors (after the 15? tenor part) and are about 2 steps
off the front sideline. The basses come in and line up on the soft
crescendo roll!! AMAZING!! When I talked to Jerede Brown (2nd Bass at
the time), he said they had to come in about a beat and a half early,
then progressively slow down (to keep it lined up), because the basses
were then moving forward while the snares were moving backwards into the
company front (playing all those shots). Let's not forget when the corps
turned backfield and were marching and playing without a conductor.
Also, the wood block was started by the top bass (to give the pit the
back field tempo), then picked up by the pit.
"Short Ride.." is probably my favorite piece ever put on the field, it
was just sooo cool, and a cool theme for the show too (which not alot of
people I know seemed to get), ABC's (Adams, Bernstein, and Copland) of
Modern American Music. Anyway, just my thoughts...

P.S. 1991 Cadets Bass Line, the BEST DAMN BASS LINE I HAVE EVER
SEEN!!!!
I loved the show as well. When they came to Montreal I was completely blown
away.
I have to say though that one of my favorite Cadets shows was 'Perilous
Skies' (1992).
That show was a visual treat.

Why, thank you!! It was my first year in Cadets. I loved it too, the
whole theme on flying was really fun... and the guard? WOW!!

SHORT RIDE IN A FAST MACHINE??!!
(don't talk about Oldemeyer's mom like that)

That show kicked ass!! It is so incredibly hummable. The closer just rocks;
I could listen to the mellophones all day. I thought the guard was really
fresh, too. I've noticed something about the Cadets, though-you guys always
seem to turn things up a notch on Finals night. I can't think of all the
years that I looked at, but you guys usually get a higher score on Finals
nights. The 93 show, BTW, musically is friggin' amazing. Any folks out there
that can make me a copy of the PBS broadcast of 93? I'd like to see the
Cadets 93 show-I'm a fan of Star, and after seeing the Finals video
(THANKS!!), I need to see what kind of visual show outdid Star. Thanks in
advance!!

I recommended that tune as a closer for a High School I write for. I was
hopiing to have the arranger model the music after that 91 show but the band
director decided to just take the whole tune!!! ALL 4+ minutes of rythmical
chaos... Oh, it was a rough year. But the drill looked good... Till I left
and then the director chopped the last 2.5 minutes... made absolutely no
sense...

I apologize for the flame but Short Ride is hard.
If you are looking to play the notes and rythms then your right it is easy but
here is the hard part:
Lining up articulation (making sure 68 people are tounging the EXACT same)
Timing precision
Making all th parts fit together as to make one musical line not a bunch of
people playing notes and rythms.
value of notes and matching that.
quality of sound on every single not, making sure they are the same.
short ride does not have huge intervals, tight chords, or tough solo parts.
but this piece is well respected.
it just depends on how much accomplishment you are trying to achieve.
I have a recording of the university of houston wind ensemble under the
direction of the famous Eddie Green playing it...
I will send a .wav file to you if you want me to.
Thanks
ahhhh....Mr. Green....great musician...great teacher...horrible breath. He
used to do clinics at my school, and he'd get in your face if you weren't doing
something right and yell at you....woo wee.....make you wanna pass out.

Well I don;t know about that because I am a trumpet player and i sit on the
third row on risers, he could never get to us.
>if you weren't doing

????????????????? this must be the younger eddie green because the eddie green
of these days doesn't yell. If you make a mistake at performing music he
helped you understand. out of 7 years of knowing him he never yells
>make you wanna pass out.
His retirement concert was incredible!
Our high school was chosen to play with them.
That group is incredible! hearing them made me wanna pass out! I was in
heaven!
I love that man!

Yes. This is exactly what I was hoping someone would point out. And
Eddie Green is fabulous! Sadly, he retired this year after 20 years at
the Univ. of Houston. I went to Houston to see his final concert and
was moved to tears during the "Nimrod" movement of Elgar's "Enigma
Variations."
Mr. Green launched many, many careers in his lifetime of work with wind
ensemble and music education students. He will be missed!
Oh my God, that's so funny. In an earlier post I said that "Short
Ride.." was one of my favorite pieces ever put on the field, the other
was Balle Sacra. How cool!!
