There have been many threads on RAMD about soloists. From who do you think was
the best ever, to name your favorites. Well Having been a soloist although I
admit I am not on any favorites list nor do I deserve to be, I find it
strange that there has not been, as far as I know, any thread about the massive
and not so massive, but still fantastic horn lines that back up these great
soloists. I wouldn't want you to assume that I'm trying to take away anything
from these ladies and gentlemen that have made the crowds cry, laugh, and just
plain sit in amazement at what comes out of those soloists horns, because then
I would be remis. However, in most cases, a soloist by himself could play ROW
ROW ROW Your Boat, and it would sound like Row Row Row Your Boat, but with a
great backing by these horn lines, The soloist could play ROW ROW ROW YOUR BOAT
and it would sound like MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY. What do you soloists think, I'm

Having been there, done that (solo work), in both junior and senior......a
value can never be put on the quality of the brass line.....I feel the line
makes the soloist, along with the proper arrangement and instruction, of
course.......I don't know how many times I've heard a great soloist with a less
than par brass lines...and (IMHO) it's not very pretty....but yet I've heard,
for the lack of a better phrase, a sub par soloist sound very good with the aid
of some damn good ensemble playing brass lines!!!

How's this for a lead soprano line:

1963
Tommy Martin (DCA Hall of Fame)
Tom "Bucky" Swan (DCA Hall of Fame)
Jackie Meehan (Should be in the Hall)
Harry Hazelwood (Should be in the Hall)
Gus Wilke (DCA Hall of Fame)
Johnny Guarino
Joe Difiglia
Vinny Costanza
and others totalling 10 leads.

1st sopranos

Dom Tambone led a cast of 5 1st sops.

French Horn:

Hy Drietzer (DCA Hall of Fame)
Pepe Notaro (DCA Hall of Fame)

Baritones:

John Simpson (Should be in the Hall)
Billy Hightower (Should be in the Hall)

All played for the Skyliners in the SAME year, backing each other up. I think
you "oldtimers" have heard of these people.

I'll try to get a roster of the 1972 Skyliner hornline. 22 or 24 lead sopranos
alone. Some of the greatest talent ever assembled in one corps ever. The stuff
that Vince Bruni has modelled the Empire Statesmen after.

Yeah. And from what I heard (I was aging out of juniors then) these guys would
split the parts so that nobody had to play in the stratosphere for the whole
show....

Terry,

True story...

Last year ('98) I started picking up the mello solo in "Elks" when the regular
guy, (Dirty) Eddie Lawrence, wasn't there. The first time I stepped out and
looked at the hornline I though "Holy Sh*t! This line is awesome!" The talent
in that one hornline could have kept two or three corps going. Not just the
"names" like Gus Wilkie, Bob Gaff and Ruben Ariola, but every person there -
contributing to that fabled Dreitzer/Skyliner sound. It makes doing a solo
soooo much easier.

Well, Terri,.....there is an empty chair and a mellophone sitting in the
practice hall at the Garfield American Legion Post 255 in Garfield, N.J. with
YOUR name on them. And there is a snare drum awaiting Jim, your beloved, in the
drum room in the basement of the post as well. I'm sure Jim would just LOVE to
make that drum sound like it should. :-)

"Sidemouth" joined in 74. "Conga" in 73. I talked to Ray about it at DCA.
His first year on the field was my last. George came a year later. I'll bet
y'all didn't know we knew their real names. :-)

And they loved every minute they spent with Sky. Ask Jack Papa about his first
impressions of the soprano talent level at his first Skyliner rehearsal. He
wrote a nice article in the RAG a few years back. He spent one year with us on
the field and became a Skyliner forever. He and Chezik are still a force in
the Alumni.

Joe Chezik is one in a million. He played with those "Great" Archie hornlines
from the 50's as well. "Camelot" for sure. I think he played with Archie the
year they played "The King And I" too. STILL goin' strong playing lead with the
Skyliner Alumni corps. Is even playing in a trio with us.

That Skyliner hornline in '72 had people playing mid soprano voice that would
have been playing solos in any other corps that year.......or ANY year,...even
today for that matter.

That Up-State crew of ours is without a doubt part of the heart and soul of our
corps history. They have carved a notch that can never be filled. Back "in the
day" Billy Siddon, Tim Boardman, Ned Nealon, Jack Papa, Joe Chezik, Tony Marsh,
and least of all Richard "Butch" Anderson to name some of them. And today add
the names of Stafford Evans, Al Richards, and others...it is a pleasure to be
in the company of these "Drum Corps Men".

I had the pleasure to play w/ some of the great horn players in
Empire...Donny Allen, Jimmy Steele, Bill Truelove, Troy Schmidt, Tommy Allen,
Tim Eick and many more. I was reminded of this when I stepped into the line
of another phenomenal horn line -- The Kilts. It would take lotsa space to
list all the fantastic musicians in the Kilts. In between, I played w/ much
smaller horn lines. What a difference a wailing horn line makes!!! Wish I
coulda played w/ some of the great horns from Sky, Cabs, Sun, Cru, Hurcs and
so many others.

I've never heard the Skyliners, but our horn staff sure talked up a storm
about them. It seems to me we were told that any member of Skyliners
soprano line could've been a soloist and the rest of the brass line wasn't
too shabby either.

THAT is FACT. Some of those lead sopranos left the Skyliners "way back when"
just to get the opportunity to play a solo because there weren't enough solos
to go around. Dreitzer didn'y use the terms 1st, 2nd, and 3rd soprano, he
changes the term 1st to solo soprano, 2nd became 1st soprano and 3rd became 2nd
soprano. And that's the way it read on the charts he wrote as well. And the
mid-range soprano parts are up there where 1st soprano range usually is,...I
know because I'm playing them.

As for the rest of the hornline????..... Dreitzer himself on French Horn, later
to br replaced by Robert "Pepe" Notaro, Jimmy Clemente, who came over from St.
Lucy's in the early 60's, Jim Hickey, from St. Helena's in the Bronx. I'd add
John Simpson in the French Horn line but he played Baritone,...he just made the
Baritone sound like a French Horn with the range he had. Billy Hightower (I'm
sure Mr. Downey remembers him,. I believe they may have played together in the
Sunrisers in the 60's as well).

The Skyliner Alumni corps ain't too shabby either with the likes of Larry
Dougard )of St. Lucy's fame) being supported by the likes of Bobby Gaff
(perhaps one of the top 2 or 3 Baritones active in drum corps today,...along
with Ruben Ariola (grom St. Rita's,...you want to here his Baritone solo in
WestSide Story), Bob "Don Vito" Gironda (from Bridgemen), Charlie Bruen (St.
Patrick's).

My God,...all these little Catholic boys wanting the play music rearranged by a
Hebrew. :-)

Here's your chance. http://www.skyliners.org and pick the multimedia page.
Download the '66 Skyliners show. And if you can find someone who has a
recording of any year from '71 thru '75, get a copy.

Somebody ought to start a Dreitzer corps site. Think about it...

St. Joseph Patron Cadets
CMCC Warriors
St. Ignatius
St. Rita's Brassmen
Enfield Sabers (You really need to hear what he could do with a smallish
hornline.)
Des Plaines Vanguard
Skyliners
....and a bunch of others where he was asked to do one or two arrangements.

And that's just PART of the 1st Bari section. (You forgot Tony Vacaro -

On the topic of Ruben Ariola, some might remember him from his days with St.
