Found this list while doing a search for my hometown A.L.post
Kankakee, Ill. Which is where AT AGE 10 I began my drum corps life. I
feel kinda proud to come from a corps that was one of best during the
birth of competition drum and bugle corps.

Which reminds me Ron, 1979 you have No Senior Info. There was not a Senior
portion of the show as no Seniors went to Houston.

That's why we (Westshoremen) sometimes listed ourselves as the 1978 and 1979 AL
Champion. (Leave it to Larry Hershman to do that.)

Great post! Amazing to see corps even way back then traveling so far
to compete. Must have been hell on those old busses. Interesting to
see bands also competing in their own group as well early on. Never
knew that. It was fun to see different corps arrive on the list in the
60's-70's. Brought back many fond memories as well as a good history
leason. Thanks a bunch:}
George

During the late 1970's the corps/post sold-off their remaining 'steamer
trunks' from that era: large, heavy, black things with brass fittings and
edge reinforcements, covered with various port, destination and
shipping-line stickers. My wife and I bought one with [as on all of them]
chipped, hand-lettered gold paint "Racine Wisconsin American Legion Drum &
Bugle Corps" on the top and sides. But after all those decades it finally
deteriorated so much we tossed it about two years ago.

Think Larry waited until the '79 Legion convention was over and then he started
slipping '79 Champs into the program write up on the corps. First time I saw it
I was kind of like WTF?

Easiest Championship I ever "won".. ;-)

from what i was told, we were allowed to claim 79 by default since there was no
show and we were the defending champion.

You didn't know? The American Legion was born there, in '19.

I recall Reading was allowed the same courtesy after winning the VFW Nats in 62
... in fact, they're probably still the defacto Champion seeing as another
Senior VFW Nats championship show was never held after 62 ... LOL

IOW, someone gave Uncle Larry an opening....... ;-)

One of the big reasons (maybe THE reason) we went to Nah 'Lins was to
have the prestige of writing "American Legion Champs" after our name.
At the time (1978) we were just a 10th place DCA corps. And that 10th
place was the first time we had made Finals since the early '70s.
Hershman wanted something that would take the corps out of the "also
ran" ranks in the minds of people.

I remember someone said "Bet winning will add 5 points to our scores".
But I can't remember if that was said before or after mass quantities
of alcohol was consumed.

And you can be damn sure that Orange AL Champ flag was in the Main
Guard at EVERY show after we got back from the Big Easy.
