I know that Santa Clara was the only corps with Pearl free-floaters in
1990. I don't know if any other drum company had them out in 1990 or
earlier.

Glassmen and Freelancers marched Remo freefloaters in 1989. I also believe
they were one of the first to use Remo K-Flam Kevlar drum headsthat year.

None of the drum hardware connects directly to the shell. Therefore the
shell can be taken out of the drum intact. This keeps most of the
tension from the heads and tension rods off of the shell (made of wood)
and keeps it on the steel cage surrounding the shell. Thus, a
"free-floating" drum shell.

The first free floating snares were in 89, the rumor I've heard is that in 89,
BD was sponsored by Yamaha, but used Premier Floaters with Yamaha stickers on
them, if you watch the video, their drums look exactly like Premiers

I think you're right. It sure looked like BD was using them when I watching
the '89 videos last night.

Free floaters were first used in 1989. To answer someone else's question
about Falam heads, I believe that SCV used a "prototype" in 1987, and most
of the big boys started using them in 1988.

Actually, the earliest example of a free floating snare drum was
on the Titanic.

Reentering the way-back machine ...

According to the "Mike and Ty Remember SCV 87" thread several years ago
(anyone else remember???), SCV's '87 snare line was the first to use Kevlar
heads. You can also go back and hear a lot more lines in '88 using them.

Sorry, Jamison. It was 1990 that we got the Remo free floaters. It had to
have been then, since that was the only year I marched, and I remember
starting tour with the Remo Triumph snares.

You can't call the remo cardboard snare drum a free floater.
89 blue coats and star used the first free floating drums by premiere HTS line
