More corps to identify. All the information I have is listed below. I'm trying
to be sure these corps aren't already in my corpslist on corpsreps under
another name or some variant spelling. And if I need to add them, then I'd like
to know where they were from. Thanks in advance.

Champtionship prelims

They were from Livingston, NJ through the mid-70's.
They started around 1964 by breaking apart from the VFW sponsored
Hilltoppers (politics at the post!), a pretty good GSC corps in
the early 60's. The IG were taught by Tom Swan on horns and
George Lopez on drums when I marched there in 68 and 69. I taught
them in 75/76. I believe that later on in the 70's they tried to
stay alive by combining with the Dukes from Old Bridge, thus the
name (a common mid/late 70's way of "Stayin' Alive" during the
huge inflation of those days).

The ones from Belleville last year were a reincarnation of the
old name, started by one of the folks I marched with, Frank Koch.

There was a Bengal Lancers from Trumbull Conn in the 70's. They
were quite good. That's probably one of them in the above. I
think they won the GSC one year, around 76 or 77. Looked a lot
like 27th (duh!).

Probably the same corps as the Haddonfield Royaleers (also on
your list), as it's the same timeframe/location. They were an
all-girl corps from South Jersey, in the town next to the
Bon-bons! Seems like lots of gals wanted to march in South Jersey
- in more than the guard!

There were other St Raphael's, but the Imperial Guardsmen were,
when they first started, sponsored by St Raphael's Church in
Livingston, NJ. This MIGHT be them as well, but as I said, I
think there were other St Raphael's corps out there. Depends on
where they placed.

>Wynn Center Toppers - competed in 1969. I'm pretty sure this is

It was. I have a memory of green satin tops, but that's about it!
Might have been a GSC corps, as that's where I marched in 68-69.
they were from NYC, but I don't know which borrough.

Oh, well, that's a BIT of info, anyway.

I suspected that was the case but my direct knowledge of drum corps dates to
1973. I didn't know about the past YMCA affiliation of the Kilties.

Hmmmmm!

L.A. Chinese = Imperial Dragons, recall Bobby Bunce of NY(Bronx)
Kingsmen fame went out to Ca. to teach them in '67.

Poughkeepsie Pacers = Wonderful corp from Poughkeepsie NY, not sure
which circuit they competed in, had these LOUD PINK & BLACK uniforms.
Remember them competing throughout '60's in NJ/NY/Conn.

St. Raphaels = Sam, where are you?

Sweethearts = Vacationland Sweethearts(All Girl) of Upper Sandusky,
Ohio, claim to fame? They finished LAST (128/128) at the '65 VFW

YMCA Kilties = Come on now, really! That how I always remember them
being announced!

Young Admirals = Sponsored by American Legion Post #2 of Lincoln, Nebraska.

Chris,

The Bellevue Sentinels is the corps you have listed as the Seattle Sentinels. The
correct name is Bellevue Sentinels from Bellevue, WA. I was one of the DM's at the
1969 World Open in Lynn...I was trying to find our score yesterday on the
internet...no luck!

The Lancers could be the Royal Lancers from Portland, Oregon. I know they
travelled to the midwet around the time you speak of.

Their was also a corps named the Oregon Crusaders from 1970-1976 that my brother
and I founded. We were one of the first corps on the westcoast to have a corporate
sponsor, Dickenson's Jams and Jellies, each of our busses were named after one of
their Jam flavors. We merged with the Imperial Cadets in 1974 to form the Imperial
Crusaders marching 120 persons.

FYI The Bellevue Sentinels had a feeder corps named the Guardsmen.

Yes! I remeber seeing them in the NW on several occasions, specifically in 1972
when VK toured the NW. In fact, we did one of those good guy things for them
providing transportation back to our common housing site in Calgary when one of
their busses was throwing a hissy fit!

The Los Angeles Chinese Imperial Drogons were enthusiastically supported by the
Los Angeles Chinese community. Before there was a 128 member limit, the Dragons
were known to march nearly 150 members. Our nickname for them was "The

made these programs very special is that the US Open organization
created a series of tables that showed the rankings for each corps that
had competed in the US Open up through '77. (I also have the Open
Class scores and rankings for the '78 US Open.) I've written down the
rankings for all the corps you list for every year they competed at the
US Open.

I've also made a couple of other comments where appropriate. I find it
interesting that two of the corps you have on your list are the two
corps I marched with at the junior level.

From Rochester, NY. US Open placings: 35 A '72; 10 AG '73; 20 A '74;
28 A '75. The Alpine Girls were started by Vince Bruni. I loved their
uniforms.

From Scarborough, ON. US Open placings: 21 A '74; 14 A '75; 7 A '76,
1 A '77; 19 O '78.

> Empire State Express - competed at the 1978 World Open and US Open

I marched in the '78 E.S. Express. We placed 10th at the World Open
and 14th at the US Open (both Open Class). We also competed at DCI
East and the American International Open that year; I don't have our
placings or scores for those contests, but I do recall that we placed
about 7th or 8th at the AIO in the Open Class. Like someone else
mentioned, the E.S. Express was a merger between the Mark Twain Cadets
of Elmira Heights, NY and the Grenadiers of Broome County, NY. We
competed in the O-Penn circuit.

There was a Mariners from Greendale, WI. Their placings at the US Open
were: 9 O '68; 19 O '70; 33 O '71; and 28 O '74.

> Mark Twain Cadets - competed in shows in 1974 in NY/PA and at the

I marched with the Mark Twain Cadets from 1974 through 1977. I believe
the corps was started in either 1967 or 1968. We competed in
NY/PA/OH/ON/WV. The US Open placings were: 26 O '70; 3 A '71; 9 A
'72; 10 A '73; 9 A '74; 20 A '75; 30 A '76, and 28 A '77. We merged
that fall (of 1977) with the Grenadiers to form the Empire State
Express.

> Miami Valley Lancers - competed in shows in Ohio in 1974/75

From Tipp City, OH. US Open placings: 35 A '74; 37 A '75.

There was an Arizona Musketeers from Phoenix, AZ in the mid to late
'80s. They are the corps that competed in Arizona and California. I
don't have any further information on them, although I do know a number
of alumni from that corps.

> ND-Ettes - all girl corps which competed in the 1968 World Open

From Bridgeport, CT. At their only US Open appearance, they won the
All-Girl competition in '70.

The Watkins Glen competition was not that big a show. Trust me. I
marched in it several times. :)

I show that a number of different "Vanguards" competed at the US Open,
including the Santa Clara Vanguard, the Des Plaines Vanguard, the
Vanguards of St. Clair Shores, MI, and the Vanguard of Seymour, CT. If
you need the US Open placings for any of these corps, let me know.

Yes, they were a junior corps, from Brooklyn, NY. US Open placing: 29
O '71.

The YMCA Kilties may be *the* Kilties. I believe I read on the Kilties
history webpage that they were once sponsored by the YMCA, but I don't
recall when in their history that was.

Wasn't this one of the corps that merged to form "the Thing"in 1973, later to

McHenry, ILL?

Tipp City, OH (15 miles N of Dayton) I marched with the corps when it finally
went under just prior to the 1976 season. They are older than 1974, but I do
not know exactly when they were formed. I do know they sponsored a show in
1971 and in attendence were the big midwest powerhouses. The story was that no
one knew they were going to be there until the show started and their buses
pulled in.

Royal Lancers were from Fairfield/Bridgeport area, then in later years moved to
Shelton Conn. Went inactive in 1970 and folded in 1971.

St. Raphaels - Bridgeport CT, competed thru the 60's and early 70's as St.

Bridgeport Golden Buccanneers and competed in the NE circuit and class A
circuits, in 76 they merged with the Emerald Cadets of New Haven and became the
Emerald Buccaneers

Vanguards - Seymour Vanguards were an all-girl corps from Ct, then in 76 went

Folded in 77
Lancers - may be the Bengal Lancers who were listed toward the end of the 70's
as the Lancers only due to a protest that occured and the drum Corps
publications would only list them as the Trumbull Ct corps or as the Lancers.
They were formed by the demise of the Trumbull Lancers.

Yes. Seymour Vanguards were from Seymour CT. Competed in Northeastern and
Greater NY circuits. Were an all-girl corps back in the late 60's. Lots of
Hurricanes influence (not really news if you know oldtime CT junior corps

After I logged off last night, I remembered that the Alpine Girls were
not *exactly* from Rochester, but from the Rochester suburb of
Irondequoit. An immaterial difference for some, but a few of us are
accountants and we have to be accurate now, don't we? :)

The mid 70s was a great time for drum corps in the Rochester area.
(Madison is a drum corps town, but to me, Rochester is THE drum corps
town.) You had the Alpine Girls (Irondequoit), Cadets of Greece
(Greece), Patriots and Mighty Liberators, and the Crusaders and Phoenix
in the senior division (Rochester). And those were the corps just from
the immediate vicinity of Rochester. Ah, the glory days, when upstate
NY had a drum corps every twenty miles in each direction.

Hope I can add a few for you -

Black Diamond Regiment was from Schulkill Haven, PA

The Blackhawks of Janesville/Beloit were also called the Blackhawk Voyagers

The El Doradans were from Denver, CO

The Haddonfield Royaleers were also known as Haddonfield Royaleer Mounties
and were from Haddonfield, NJ

Verifying that the Lanciers were from Ft. Dodge, IA

Verifying that the McHenry Viscounts were from McHenry, IL

Seneca Princemen and Toronto Optimists merged in 1976, and to give them
their due, placed 12th in DCI Finals that year. The also placed 8th at DCI
in 1977 - remember the huge black and white parachute guys?
This was one of the best mergers to come out of the 70's, tho short-lived.
There may be another thread here - mergers. I quickly think of the
Crossmen, NorthStar and Pioneer.

The previously mentioned Vasella Musketeers (also known as Vasella Cadets)
were from Philadelphia, PA.

Hi! I'm writing to give you some more information on the Mariners.

Although I'm not sure when they actually began, but they started out as a drill
team. Around 1965-66 they were banned from Wisconsin shows by Badgerland, the
local governing body for drum corps at that time, so they travelled to Illinois
for many of their shows. Made VFW finals in 1967. Famous for a lot of GE gimmicks
during their heyday in the '60s. My fond memory is the line tosses with sabres the
drum majors used to start their shows. Many people out of the Mariners went on as
instructors, including Patty Clark, Steve Martell, and, most notably, John
Brazale(my apologies if I am misspelling his name). For newbies out there, John
was with Phantom Regiment as both a color guard guru and visual designer in the
'70s and '80s. Patty and Steve were on the staff of the Kilts in the late '70s.

The Mariners folded as a junior corps sometime after the '74 season. They got
together again as a senior drill team in the early '90s, and marched local parades
until the late '90s, when they folded for good.
