Lets Not forget the 86 Suncoast Sound who beat Devs in Field horns across
the board at finals.
Don't forget 83 & 85 Suncoast also. These were uniquely Ballsy hornlines

I agree with the list that Herb posted and your additions, but I would have to

'78. "Firebird" off the line is all the proof I need. Such a killer low brass

Sure, it wasn't exactly a DCI hornline in most aspects, but I think it's a
shame to not put '98 Marion Cadets in this group. What a tight,
well-put-together group! Too often, we only look at the big "powerful" corps,
but Marion deserved (and often got) a standing ovation at every show they
performed last summer.

Isn't that the truth!!!!!!!!!!!
Man, what I wouldn't give to sit down in front of those horn lines today.
There are so many more to choose from.
1968 Kilties, Cavies, 1965 Royalaires and selected years from the following;
Blue Rock, Boston Crusaders, St. Lucy's, Blessed Sac, 27th Lancers, Blue
Stars,.... and the list goes on.
Can you remember the sop line from St. Andrews Bridgemen when they came up to
the front side line and just blew you away(early seventies). Exposure City!
Even horn lines like the Purple Lancers in 1974 can blow most of the horn lines
out there today.
Let's get back to our roots and let these talented youths play to the audience.

Spencer,
Thanks for the note about the Atlanta line but SURELY you mean one of
the lines from 79 or 80. '82 was a "less than stellar" year for us in
Atlanta with the majority of the hornline rookies. All those kids
stuck with it though and we built towards a very strong line again in
'86. Just think you must have meant 1980, that was Jim Ott's last
line the first half the season and Freddy Martin took it over after
Jim's death and finished the season.

Awesome snare part off the line, too. I loved that. But we are talking
about hornlines and I agree that it would be hard to match the low
brass of PR that year. I just liked the whole show and they did win
brass.

We used to get into terrible rows with Guardsmen staff and management
because there were six of us who were just crazy for Spirit and we'd
wear SOA t-shirts. In '78, we were known as the Spirit six. We even got

told anyone on here that one.

I hadn't noticed it until you pointed it out. Of course, my mentor I

Not trying to "diss" any '70's era DCI hornlines, but in terms of quality,
intonation, and expression, things really started to take a turn for the better
with the 1979 Blue Devils. As a result of "redefining" hornline sound, the
following corps have stood the test of time in my opinion.
While there have been many corps with great brass lines, these are my very
subjective Top 10:
1. 1988 Blue Devils
2. 1992 Star Of Indiana
3. 1985 Suncoast Sound
4. 1982 Blue Devils
5, 1991 Star Of Indiana
6. 1986 Blue Devils
7. 1984 Garfield Cadets
8. 1989 Phantom Regiment
9. 1983 Suncoast Sound
10. 1996 Phantom Regiment
Honorable Mention:
1. 1984 Suncoast Sound
2. 1982 Sky Ryders
3. 1980 Spirit Of Atlanta
4. 1985 Madison Scouts
5. 1995 Madison Scouts

Cadets 96: Not their best show, nor my favorite, but that was their best horn
line, IMO, they have put out.
Phantom 96: 94, was good as well, except the very end when that Baritone let
out the biggest frack in the history of fracks.
Cavies 92: Proves you can play music written by English composers and leave
the show humming the melody. Oh yeah....they sounded great as well. Oh
yeah.....I'm a biased alumni.
Spirit 80: Loud is good
From a Cavies standpoint, I think 94 was the best Cavies hornline ever. Nobody
really caught on to the show, but that hornline was hot. 95 and 96 were great
lines as well.
My thoughts,
John
If you want to talk about loud, we can. The year is 1998, the Madison Scouts
and the Blue Devils are playing a concert in Ypsilanti Michigan. The Madison
Scouts are on stage playing God Bless A Child, their hornline hits one of the
loudest points in the song when lights from the rafters up above fall(not
hitting anyone though) Now that was loud, no press box but I don't think anyone
could.

Not only was she a good judge, but let's face it, she may have been one of the
best horn instructors ever at pure execution. 1973 Argonne Rebels horn line
just rocked. A person with a trained ear could sit in front of that horn line
and get blown away by the level of execution. I know, I did.

The list should begin and end with the 1993 Star of Indiana. The darkest,
roundest, fullest sound, clean as hell, in tune, with an unmatched dynamic
range, and each and every person doing exactly the same thing exactly the same
way...the BEST marching wind ensemble EVER assembled.
GC
"Marching Wind Ensemble"? Maybe you should lay off of that bando brand crack a
wee bit. It ain't good for you.
Dennis "Crackin' Up" Sparrow
I would say that 96 and 97 were extremely interesting. In 1996, I thought
we had a better book; in 97, our hornline was much better, though, but
our book had a few very exposed spots that didn't always come out
successfully--intonation, ensemble tightness, etc.
This is an example of how the lesser hornline (96) outdid the better
hornline. For those visual-orientated people out there, the drill had a
lot to do with our success in 1996. Everything was staged perfectly, yes
absolutely PERFECTLY, which eliminated many music ensemble phasing
problems. It also cleaned up balance well.
In 96, our drill moved at a very controlled pace. The drill moved at a
pretty constant 8 to 5 step size, but motion was created through the
design. Effects were created by design, not by people running. I think
96 PR was the response to the mad-running marathon found in 95 PR.

hell of a computer aided design system, complete with 3d humanoids. Rendering

consuming. Hmmm, a Virtual Reality drum corps show.

I don't even want to try to come up with a top 10 since there have been many
good, diverse hornlines.
But I just couldn't take this--especially at #1. I just listened to that CD the
other day, and I concluded that '84 Garfield was one of the worst, crassest,
unmusical hornlines that had even won a horn trophy. (3-way tie incl BD and
SCV.)
I can't for the life of me figure out how anyone could put this hornline in
their top 10, let alone #1! BD and SCV in '84 were SO MUCH better in every way
it's not funny. BD's La Fiesta and SCV's Tender Land are fine examples of
hornlines deserving of Top 10 honors.
I'll give '84 Garfield a bow for Top 10 visual programs of all time (even
that's a stretch), but in no way should that hornline be remembered for
anything resembling excellence.
92 Star over 91? Are you kidding me? 90 AND 91 star's hornline were without a
doubt better than 92.
isn't 88 bd the year that thelonius (the big black guy) jacked up all his
solos. i know there was a year that he and a few others got really drunk before
finals, and because he was "gone" he totally played like crap. someone please

i toally agree with this statement. even 93 was a much better brass year than
92. but 90 was the best brass book of them all.
darryl =0)
Hi Bill,
No, I am not kidding. The low brass was better IMO in 1992, as were the
sopranos. The mello line of 1991 was better. . . in fact, they were so good
that many forget the rest of the line that year.
1990 Star was incredible, but the drill took its toll on the longer phrases, and
intonation was somewhat off at the "fff" sections at the end of the opener, as
well as at the end of the show. I still love that show, but 1992 was
consistently more "in tune" with better quality across the board.
Just my opinion as stated by the "very subjective Top 10" disclaimer,

First of all, his name was not 'thelonius' and secondly, this is all
bullshit...I am so sick and tired of this type of crap ending up on the
newsgroup when people talk about him (it was 1989 btw dipshit). You
people that go after members like this must have a pretty pathetic life.
Unless you've walked in the shoes of a soloist of his caliber (and believe
me he NAILED that solo everytime I saw him on tour) you should keep your
mouth shut. Or at the very least, talk about what happened with some
respect. Your 'facts' are total gossip and unsubstantiated. I knew Dan
very well from my last year in BD (86) and he was a great guy and I knew
he would turn into a fabulous player. I wish people would remember him
from the totality of his playing and not just from one 'gaff' at finals.
Show some respect, ok?

I agree with Mike. That guy was a hell of a player.

Hi Walter,
The Argonne Rebels were one of the best. . . no doubt about it! Was it '72 that
they did JC Superstar? If so, WOW!
I hear/heard about them all the time from Craig Harms and Roger Kugler. . . guys
who were there, and guys who I've learned from.
Thanks for the kind words about the Colts show this past year. We view it as a
step in the right direction. Look for even more "crowd friendly" shows in the
very near future!
take care,
Chuck Naffier
Colts. . . blah, blah, blah. . .
No doubt about it.
I have a video of them from then; they opened with a great "Barnum and Bailey's
Favorites", and also did a CP of "Stars and Stripes". If they ONLY had a drum
line close to the skills of their horn line!
That was a great show!

Bzzzzzzt ! Try: Al Chez Late Night With David Letterman Garfield Cadets
hold up a second there mike...i was not disrespecting anyone. i think you got
the wrong idea and have blown this out of proportion. that guy which i referred
to named thelonius...wasn't that his nickname or something? i marched for
mandarins from 84-93, so we saw CA corps all summer long. all i know is all
year long, we idiolized that guy cuz you are right, he nailed those solos all
year long. he was an awesome soloists and i personally know he was a great
guy...he used to chat with us all the time after the shows. but i got that info
from one of your members the following year when we all asked what happened cuz
we were so surprised at how he played that night, so it wasn't like one of
those crazy ass rumors or anything. but thanks for clearing up the year thing
for me. and i would appreciate it if you don't call me dipshit, unless i was
actually intending to act like one.
