Tall, dignified and commanding; he represented the ideal D.M. in my
opinion. A few years later, a friend compared my own conducting style to
that excellent Drum Major from the Optimists.
He had a terrific "stage presence," and wonderful hand gestures. The corps
followed his every move.
This Drum Major was memorable not only for his excellence, but also for his
ethnicity. He was a black man conducting a DCI Finalist Corps. That was a
rarity during the 1970s.
The corps' performance from that year is still in included frequently in
video montages. The image of the entire corps hiding beneath a huge
parachute is unforgettable.
Anyone else have a favorite Drum Major?

Bob Guinn only was a good drum major because the years he was major (97 and

Pizazz, and All That Jazz). Even though it was cool what he did in 97 at the 28
second hold in finals, he still isn't the best ever in drum corps.

hands down... becky woods (i think that was her last name) of star of indiana.
classy woman, great conductor, respected leader. she aged out a year (maybe
two) before star won their championship. too bad...cuz she deserved to lead a
corps to a first place finish.
Did you read the subject? Favorite drum majors, not best. They are not the
same. Sky Ryders 1988 sound of music show is one of my all-time favorites,
but it certainly wasn't the best.
As for my favorite drum majors, have to give to both Roderick Saunders and
your pal and mine, Nikk Pilato. I had a blast marching under these two!!

Well without a doubt I would have to say that the best DM I have ever had the
honor of working with is the DM's of the 98 Phantom Regiment, Steven Moss and
Tommy Feagin. They were not just great DM's but great people all around. Always
doing there best to make the corps better than the day before. And without a
doubt the nicest people that I have ever met. Not like the usual ,"Im DM and
your just a measly member attitude". They felt as if they were equal to the
rest of the corps. And I feel as if this is the most essential part of any
corps.

My favorite is Rod Saunders, Regiment 94 and 95 (no offense, Nikk, if you're

Claire de Lune. And he's a great guy.
Any of the vets from those years will always remember Rod's breakfast and

It's a shame isn't it. Many of the DM's until they started standing on podiums
were actually showmen and showomen instead of today's human metronomes with no
showmanship except for taking a baton out of their back or sleeve and then
smiling at the audience cause they somehow think that's cool.

I, too, realize that there are other greats that I have
never had the pleasure to witness. I would add the following
two to my all time list:
"Big Daddy" Dave Richards - 1970 Boys of 76
Gary "Learch" Wright - 1980-83 Spirit of 76
1995-97 Kilts
Both "showmen above and beyond the call of duty".
J.C.
Fran is on my list (see my earlier post). I think he may have used up his
'great DM' credits when he donned that silly bald wig for the horrible 'King
and I' show BS did in 72. Talk about a sad decline for a great corps!
He still one of MY favorites, though.
Of course, doing back-flips and handstands to "To Tame the Perilous Skies",
"Year of the Dragon", and "Romeo and Juliet" would look pretty silly. :-)
And, our DM used a baton, way back in 70.

He had a fake wooden hand, the result of a war injury.
At his last performance in Racine at the Boys of 76

final release of the closer, his fake wooden hand
flew off and into the mass of screaming fans in the

(minus his hand), he turned back to the corps, smiled,
and his dentures fell out. :-)
The rest of the corps just about lost it in the end zone.

Back when I was in grammar school and playing a single pistoned G-D bugle we
had Gene O'Connell as our drum major. I really can't say whether he was a good
DM or not, but he sure knew a lot of dirty songs and could sing them in Spanish
no less. <G> I remember the day that Father J.J. Donovan (the same priest who
started St. Andrew's Bridgemen, the forerunner to the Bayonne Bridgemen) told
us that Gene had been killed in Nam. That WAS hard to take.
And then the guy who replaced him, Joe Castrianni. He was cool too. His uncle
owned Callahan's, a famous hot dog stand in Fort Lee, N.J. and every once in a
while he'd treat us to hot dogs and a Yoo-Hoo. <G> And later on when I became
of age to imbibe, his father owned one of the "better" taverns in town, a place
called the Fireside Inn where I had my first "legal" drink of alcohol. Got it
"on the house" too because I had marched with his son in Madonna. <G>

OK, here's my two picks--Mark Kopang, VK during the early finals years (a
human metronome--always exactly in time) and Time Andriese, SCV mid 80's.(a
personal drinking buddy of mine).
PM Dale MacKinley Riebesehl, Racine Kilties DM since '94
TIM ANDRIESE....SCV 86 and 87
Not only was he a god o' drum majoring, but he was really a friendly person.
Great being drum major of another California corps while he was around...
BRADY???....SKYRYDERS 87 and 88
Probably one of the friendliest easy going drum majors I have ever met. He was
really a great guy and watch the 88 Sound of Music show...great control.
ELLIS CARTER III...VK 88
Yes, one of THE greatest drum majors VK ever had.
BILL PRICE...VK 89???...90....91....?????
The "other" black drum major after Ellis...GREAT conductor and a great
showman!!
CARL ALLISON....FREELANCERS 82,83,84???
I happened to be in town and "stumbled" literally upon a Freelancer rehearsal
in the summer of 1983 at Sacramento State. As I was drum major of my high
school band down home, I thought I knew something about drum majoring. I
didn't know squat. I never met the man, but boy, since that day, I was a big
fan of his! WHAT COMMAND!! Great man....
GREG MAR...MANDARIN 87
Another great California corps with another great California drum major. And
he is still around judging and teaching and giving back to the activity. Great
drum major...
I also know a couple of drum majors whom I could NOT stand. But of course,
I'll have to keep that to myself. But I will tell you what side of the country
HE was from.....THE RIGHT COAST!! And boy was he full of himself....
ANY GUESSES!!!???? Let's just say he knows how to conduct in 7 real well....

MARCHING BAND, DRUM CORP, WINTER GUARD LOVING GUY!!
Sunny, southern California....
I'm delighted to return the compliment. Steve was not only a terrific DM, but
a heck of a nice guy and a good friend to turn to in what were sometimes crazy
times.
What some of the posters may not realize is how different the jobs of each of
these DMs were. Some had the primary (sometimes only) function of conducting
the corps on the field, others were extensions of the instructional staff,
while still others were involved intimately in the day to day minutiae of
running the corps. Good people all, and very good at their jobs.

Thanks, Mr. Fugipoent. Nothing starts off your Monday morning quite like
knowing that anonymous people are in awe of you. Truly a terrific feeling and
I think I'll be able to float along without a second cup of coffee.
I'm sorry that my post doesn't measure up to your adult standards. Now stop
your sniveling like a good little boy and get back to life.
