Famous drummer Billy Cobham marched in the Sunrisers back in the day. Wayne
Downey was also a part of the Sunriser organization back in the 70's, I
believe. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Fred Sanford was with Sun
too.

I personally know that Wayne marched with the Smithtown Freelancers in the
60's and then in the 70's moved to California and marched with SCV before
getting involved with BD. You might be right, but I'm not aware he marched
with the Sunrisers in between. I'll be talking to him soon and I'll ask.

that's why he uses kevlar on his snare drum, but I'm not sure when or

I don't think he was president yet, since he was elected in Nov.'60, and
took office in Jan. '61; the Crusaders were the Most Precious Blood (MPB)
Crusaders until '56 or '57, then became Hyde Park Cru, then Boston. (MPB is
a parish in Hyde Park, a district of Boston)

During the late '50s and early '60s St. Kevin's Emerald Knights of Boston
had as honorary members:
Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Durante, Wayne Newton (only a kid then), and some
more I wasn't there to meet.

Oh, and another famous person who actually PLAYED in a DC,
Chick Corea -
who played with St. Rose Scarlet Lancers of Chelsea MA, circa 1960. St.
Rose disbanded in '62 and a lot of members merged with I. C. Reveries of
Revere (next town over) which evolved into 27th Lancers.
Now you know where the name Lancers comes from!! Jim Wedge was the constant
thread.

This really should be in the RAMD FAQ.... :)

Neal did not march anywhere. A long time ago, I got to meet him
at the Blue Jays spring training in Dunnedin, Fl. After I got him and
Alex Lifeson to autograph my baseball cap (which they were hating, since
it was a NY Yankees cap), I asked him about drum corps. He knows what
they are (so did Alex, even though he has never played anything but
guitar), but he was never in one.

Andy,

Fred also taught the Cadets drum line in 72, when they fired
George Tuthill after the 1971 season. It was during the era when
Don Angelica would bring folks in to do the Cadets and he'd get
them a job as band director at Bergenfield HS (so they could
actually get paid!), where he was personnel manager. Quite a
symbiotic relationship there for a few years.

Sadly, the entire 72 main Cadet instructional staff is now gone.
Bobby Hoffman did our drill, Don taught us brass, and Fred did
the percussion.

BTW, are you doing any EMBA inbdoor shows? I've been assigned
to a few.

lines in CT. I offered to do a trial/eval tape the Saturday, just to get used

Yes, it's hard to get a new activity off the ground. Bob is doing
a great coordination job, but he needs to have the schools ready
to put out a group in order for it to be a success.

Which one is cancelled? My first is 2/26, and I have another on
3/18, yet another 4/1 and champs on 4/8, if they all get off the
ground.

Have you heard any numbers about how many lines are coming out
(and who)? Tom Aungst told me Dartmouth might not be able to do
any EMBA shows this season, given the travel costs they incur. He
hoped to do one, but he was doubtful, at least as of January.

Yes, it's a different animal, that's for sure! It's probably a
worthwhile effort just for your own benefit, if you haven't ever
done one of the indoor shows.

No shows are cancelled. Bob is just reducing the number of judges at each
show. I have the 4/1 show also.

Trumbull HS is the only line Bob mentioned. They were at the clinic last month
in Ramsey. He feels more will be active towards April, probably concert class.

The most recent famous person I am aware of is Speaker of the House, Dennis
Hastert, who marched with my sister in the '50's with the Aurora Vaqueros
(Illinois). DCW's Steve Vickers has been in touch with his office.

Also, Ed McMahon marched with the Defenders (Massachusetts) in the '40's.
He played baritone and once brought it onto the Tonight show, talked about
the corps and very briefly tooted it for the world.

Well, it wasn't with a drum corps, but I thought it would be pretty
interesting
(considering his music has been played by many corps throughtout the
last 15 years or so).

Pat Metheny and some members of his original band were members of
their High School Band. Pat was originally a trumpet player. His brother
taught him how to play, and has released several albums of his own on
trumpet. Anyway, this is an interesting quote I found from Pat Metheny
about his "bando" days.

"All of us definitely spent our Friday nights out on the football field
marching
around with instruments. I played french horn up until I got out of high
school
'cause I needed those credits to graduate. I remember I used to have to play
the halftime show in order to get my credit, then I'd race into Kansas City
to
make my gig, still in my marching band uniform, switch clothes, and go play
in this organ trio.”

Now people know where his song "Forward March" came from. By the way,
if anyone has never heard that song, they should check it out. It's a riot.

St Catherine's Chessmen [if we're talking about the same corps]. They,
by the way, bought the PR's old uniforms back in the mid to late 60s.
I remember seeing a photo of them in Drum Corps Digest, and when I got
on with PR in '72 noted it was the same uniform... the '72 PR uniforms
being new copies of the old.

Consequently, there was at least a couple years back then when you
could have seen two different corps wearing the same design uniforms
at the same show.

In 1985 or 86 (I can't remember right now) I was fortunate enough to attend
a rare Neil Peart drum clinic in Fort Wayne, Indiana. My brother had the
opportunity to ask Neil if he had ever marched with a corps. He said
something to the effect of "No, but a lot of people think I did because of
my strong rudimental background" (this is not a literal quote from him,
just a summary of his answer). So, the definitive answer, straight from the
horse's mouth is no, Neil Peart never marched in a Drum and Bugle Corps.

And as Mr. Peashey can attest, has been seen in many a local show...I
remember one particularly surreal show where we (the Patriots) competed
under DCA rules against Cru, Statesmen, etc, Star of Indiana did an
exhibition (it was the first year of Brass Theatre) and I met Steve Gadd,
who was in attendance.
