I have heard that Steve Gadd and Neil Peart both did corps.
They would always want some kind of proof. They never read it in Modern
Drummer, so they wouldn't believe it.
Is there anyway we could get the answer as to whether Neil Peart actually
marched Drum Corps or not?
I did read an article that talked about Tommy Lee going through various
drum corps' in his youth. But they wouldn't say which Corps he was in.

Doc Severinson marched with a corps in Eastern Oregon in his youth. As I

Michael Jackson (the football player with the Seahawks in the 80's, not
the gloved one) marched with the Columbians of Tri Cities, Wa in the 70's.

Of course it wouldn't fit to you, Nikk. You know so much about drum corps

Larry Girard is right. Bridgeport, CT once hosted a passel of junior

Russ MacKinnon (27 alum) is no longer drumming for ToP.

Where did they get the money and the kids?
Where did they get the money? How did they attract the kids?
The corps wre neighborhood oriented, and sponsorship came from the youth
gorups of the era, mainly the CYO and the PAL. The money came from a
combination of funds dedicated to youth from the organizations and plenty
of car washes, candy sales, dues, bake sales, bazzars, bingo, and parades.
I'd say by 1966 the annual budget to field a corps was roughly $60,000.
Participation in the Nationals usually called for some creative
fundraising.
The corps Fred mentioned were near and dear to me. I can vividly recall
bopping from rehearsal to rehearsal during the week. Compound that with
the Hurricanes and Conn. Yankees and you rarely had a night free.
It was a good time ... it was a great time. So many friends ... so many
memories. I guess that's why the Barnum Festival has remained such a big
attraction over the years. All those rivals of the past meeting at
greeting each other in every corner of Kennedy Stadium in Bridgeport. The
same thing happens at shows in Clifton, NJ and the Meadowlands.

Mickey Kelly - biggest name to force a change in winter guards
Rich Warga - Skyliners, Garfield drill instructor
Arnie Juliano - Hurricanes Director
Bob Findley - Hurricanes, Matadors DM - DC Hall of Fame member
Bill Duquette - Hurricanes, Spirit of Atlanta Director
Ace Holleran - journalist, Drum Corps World
Jim Dugan, Jr. - Bridgemen, Bushwackers drum instructor

Fred,
First of all, St. Raphael's Bucs were all male and I believe the
Musketeers were the feeder. The Marionettes were formed to accomodate the
girls that wanted to march. Many corps of that era were not co-ed.
Bridgeport PAL survived well after the St. Raphael's corps folded.
NDettes were formed as an outgrowth of the all-girls Notre Dame High
School during the 60's. Most of the other corps were sponsored by
churches as a youth activity. The "power corps" (Bucs and PAL) were
constantly drawing on the membership of the smaller corps.
Now for the next part of the story -
There were at least _another_ seven viable junior corps within a thirty
minute drive of Bridgeport during that era. For those who do not find
your alma-mater on the list, please forgive me:
St. Aedan's Emerald Knights - New Haven, CT
Oxford Explorers - Oxford, CT
Seymour Girls - Seymour CT
Shoreliners - Milford, CT
Classics - East Haven, CT
Silver Falcons - Stamford, CT
Troubadours - Trumble, CT
If I remember correctly, there were also _three_ senior corps. The
Hurricanes, Yankee Peddlers (Stratford?) and another corps.
No shortage of kids because this area of CT had very dense population and
may factory workers who were looking for activity for their kids.
Now for the money part.
As you can see there were enough corps to have local shows without
traveling too far
so there were not high travel expenses.
It didn't take anywhere near the money then to outfit a corps. Bugles
were bugles, so corps didn't need to buy new ones every few years.
Percussion was limited to snares, tenors (single drum), bass, cymbals and
possibly some latin perc. No pit. Color guard carried traditional flags,
rifles and sabers. No props. All members with the possible exception of
Drum Major and Guard Captain wore the same uniform. And it stayed the
same forever.
Corps size was also different. The biggest hornline I can recall was
somewhere around 40 with the average being about 33. Percussion was
usually 4 snares, 4 tenors, 2 cymbals and 2 or 3 basses. Guard was
usually 15 or so. Note that this allowed the corps to travel in comfort
on two 39-passenger busses, which was the normal motor coach size. The
equipment truck was at the very biggest a 16 or 18 foot straight body
truck. No trailers, semi's, etc. In fact, some corps owned busses but
most would charter because the overall cost was less. Fuel was cheap
then, too.
I would peg the average corps budget at somwhere in the range of $30,000.
Tour fees were unheard of. Dues were usually $1.00 or less per week.
Compared with today, drum corps was a bargain. For all the nit pickers, I
know I didn't figure for inflation.
Any corps of that era would be considered a Div III corps today, based on
size. I'll bet that the best Div III corps have annual budgets that are
more than $100,000.
Now you know IMO why drum corps is dying.
Larry Girard, Jr.

feel free to correct.)
