Who knows of famous people that were ever involved in drum corps.
I got the idea from the post about the Smashing Pumpkins band member.

Could we have some substantiation on this. When I was in high school,
and marching in Drum Corps, I would use the Neil Peart line to try to get
interest going at my high school.

They would always want some kind of proof. They never read it in Modern
Drummer, so they wouldn't believe it.

Is there anyway we could get the answer as to whether Neil Peart actually
marched Drum Corps or not?

I did read an article that talked about Tommy Lee going through various
drum corps' in his youth. But they wouldn't say which Corps he was in.

I met Neil Peart once in Dunnedin, Florida, where the Blue Jays
hold spring practice (Geddy and Neil are HUGE baseball fans), and I asked
him if he had ever heard of drum corps, and while he said "Yeah, I love
those things, eh?", he never said "Yeah, I used to march in one, eh hoser?"
So, I guess the jury is still out. I once heard (I think from Ace
Holleran) that Cliffie on "Cheers" used to march drum corps....It just
figures, huh? Cliffie Klaven, a bass drummer. Fits like peas and carrots....

Doc Severinson marched with a corps in Eastern Oregon in his youth. As I
recall, it was an American Legion Post corps (no name is specific).

Michael Jackson (the football player with the Seahawks in the 80's, not
the gloved one) marched with the Columbians of Tri Cities, Wa in the 70's.

Chic Corea marched when he was a kid. A friend of
mine met him back in 93 and he (my friend), being a Devs alum, asked
wheather he had ever heard Blue Devils' performances
of his (Chic's) music. So they got to talking about drum corps
stuff and found out that he marched sop when he was
a youngster (the corps name Purple Knights jumps to
my brain, but I don't recall for sure).

I haven't heard any of Rush's most recent stuff, but Neal's drumming on
the older stuff was full of singles, rarely did he play double strokes.
Thus I'd be hard pressed to agree that he was rudimental. In light of
the fact that he rarely played doubles leads me to doubt he marched
corps, unless he played a percussion instrument that required no
double strokes.

Rutsey was the original drummer for Rush, joining guitarist Alex Lifeson
and bassist Jeff Jones (quickly replaced by Geddy Lee) back around 1968.
Neil Peart replaced Rutsey in 1974.

Back to drum corps... :-) I'll second whoever quoted Neil Peart as saying
he had great admiration for drum corps percussionists, but had never
played in a corps himself. I know I've seen that quote somewhere --
probably in response to a question forwarded to him by Modern Drummer.
I'll see if I can find the original source and post it here.

Re: John Ratzenberger "Cliffie".
Yes, I marched in the line with him, and went to St. Ann's grade school
with him. He was funny even back then. There is a picture with both os ud
in it that once ran in the old "Drum Corps News." If I can find it, I'll
have it scanned and forwarded to Cathy and Caryn's Web site.

I still communicate with Ratz, and am trying to get him to contribute a
few 'graphs to the upcoming history of drum corps "coffee table" book.

Larry Girard is right. Bridgeport, CT once hosted a passel of junior
corps. Three of them made finals at either VFW, Legion or World Open
championships in the 60s. Yes, I know this is old-fart-reminiscing stuff.

Also:
Lee Thornburgh, ex-trumpeter from Tower of Power marched junior corps in
Syracuse (Monarchs?)
Russ MacKinnon (27 alum) is no longer drumming for ToP.

Rumor: Danny Seraphine (original drummer of Chicago) marched with Royal
Airs. May be an urban legend.

Ed McMahon is from Lowell Mass. It's hard to find ANYBODY from greater
Boston who DIDN'T march.

Hey, anybody remember Chuck Mangione marched in the Cadets of Greece from
Arcadia, NY.
BTW: Wayne Downey's first drum corps experience was with the Smithtown
Freelancers from Smithtown, Long Island, New York back in the mid-60's.
George Hopkins marched in the Crossmen. Tommy Igoe not only marched with
the Bridgemen, he also taught the Hawthorne Caballeros in 1991. Bill
Duquette, director of Spirit of Atlanta used to be a drum major for the
Connecticut Hurricanes and started in junior corps in Bridgeport PAL. Hey
guys, what about Curt Gowdy? Didn't he march in the Kansas City Star or
something like that!!!(Just kidding)

An interesting response from Fred V. with regards to listing the Jr. corps
from
the Bpt./Fairfield CT area in the 50's and 60's.

Where did they get the money? How did they attract the kids?

The corps wre neighborhood oriented, and sponsorship came from the youth
gorups of the era, mainly the CYO and the PAL. The money came from a
combination of funds dedicated to youth from the organizations and plenty
of car washes, candy sales, dues, bake sales, bazzars, bingo, and parades.
I'd say by 1966 the annual budget to field a corps was roughly $60,000.
Participation in the Nationals usually called for some creative
fundraising.

The corps Fred mentioned were near and dear to me. I can vividly recall
bopping from rehearsal to rehearsal during the week. Compound that with
the Hurricanes and Conn. Yankees and you rarely had a night free.

It was a good time ... it was a great time. So many friends ... so many
memories. I guess that's why the Barnum Festival has remained such a big
attraction over the years. All those rivals of the past meeting at
greeting each other in every corner of Kennedy Stadium in Bridgeport. The
same thing happens at shows in Clifton, NJ and the Meadowlands.

Oh well. Time to listen to the 65 Nutmeg Melodies. See ya in the wayback
machine.

And, unless the other guy you mentioned had a nickname -- it
doesn't ring a bell.

BTW - some notables that came from the CT corps -

John Bodnar - Hurricanes, Matadors drum instructor
Mickey Kelly - biggest name to force a change in winter guards
Rich Warga - Skyliners, Garfield drill instructor
Arnie Juliano - Hurricanes Director
Bob Findley - Hurricanes, Matadors DM - DC Hall of Fame member
Bill Duquette - Hurricanes, Spirit of Atlanta Director
Ace Holleran - journalist, Drum Corps World
Jim Dugan, Jr. - Bridgemen, Bushwackers drum instructor

... and so many more. It was a Drum Corps rich region.

She marched winterguard in the early eighties as a

Never marched, but became a big fan was Rita Moreno,

tried in vain to plug DCI on the Tonight Show, David

Rita became snapped back "Avacado and baby ca-ca!".
Nothing more was brought up on either subject.

Fred,

First of all, St. Raphael's Bucs were all male and I believe the
Musketeers were the feeder. The Marionettes were formed to accomodate the
girls that wanted to march. Many corps of that era were not co-ed.
Bridgeport PAL survived well after the St. Raphael's corps folded.
NDettes were formed as an outgrowth of the all-girls Notre Dame High
School during the 60's. Most of the other corps were sponsored by
churches as a youth activity. The "power corps" (Bucs and PAL) were
constantly drawing on the membership of the smaller corps.

Now for the next part of the story -
There were at least _another_ seven viable junior corps within a thirty
minute drive of Bridgeport during that era. For those who do not find
your alma-mater on the list, please forgive me:
St. Aedan's Emerald Knights - New Haven, CT
Oxford Explorers - Oxford, CT
Seymour Girls - Seymour CT
Shoreliners - Milford, CT
Classics - East Haven, CT
Silver Falcons - Stamford, CT
Troubadours - Trumble, CT

If I remember correctly, there were also _three_ senior corps. The
Hurricanes, Yankee Peddlers (Stratford?) and another corps.

No shortage of kids because this area of CT had very dense population and
may factory workers who were looking for activity for their kids.

Now for the money part.

As you can see there were enough corps to have local shows without
traveling too far
so there were not high travel expenses.

It didn't take anywhere near the money then to outfit a corps. Bugles
were bugles, so corps didn't need to buy new ones every few years.
Percussion was limited to snares, tenors (single drum), bass, cymbals and
possibly some latin perc. No pit. Color guard carried traditional flags,
rifles and sabers. No props. All members with the possible exception of
Drum Major and Guard Captain wore the same uniform. And it stayed the
same forever.

Corps size was also different. The biggest hornline I can recall was
somewhere around 40 with the average being about 33. Percussion was
usually 4 snares, 4 tenors, 2 cymbals and 2 or 3 basses. Guard was
usually 15 or so. Note that this allowed the corps to travel in comfort
on two 39-passenger busses, which was the normal motor coach size. The
equipment truck was at the very biggest a 16 or 18 foot straight body
truck. No trailers, semi's, etc. In fact, some corps owned busses but
most would charter because the overall cost was less. Fuel was cheap
then, too.

I would peg the average corps budget at somwhere in the range of $30,000.
Tour fees were unheard of. Dues were usually $1.00 or less per week.

Compared with today, drum corps was a bargain. For all the nit pickers, I
know I didn't figure for inflation.

Any corps of that era would be considered a Div III corps today, based on
size. I'll bet that the best Div III corps have annual budgets that are
more than $100,000.

Now you know IMO why drum corps is dying.

I was listening to a '70's retro show on the radio last night and Maurice
White, the drummer for Earth, Wind and Fire, said that he got into
drumming because he noticed that the ladies were preferential to drummers.
Also, when he saw a drum and bugle corps, he said he was hooked.

I do not know for sure whether or not this means that he acually marched
in one, but the cool part is that he attributed his interest in drumming
to drum corps.
