The legend and the legacy.....we're talking about none other than Gene Marotta,
solo soprano with the Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni and over 30 years as solo
soprano with Hawthorne's competing corps. Here is a man who has played with
the likes of James D'Amico, George Rodriguez, George Del Monte, Maynard
Ferguson, and Chuck Mangione just to name a few. He has won more Nationals,
Dreams, States and other shows combined than any other horn player in the
activity.

Why is it that this consummate artist has not yet been recognized and elected
to the Hall of Fame? I am aware that not everyone can be instantaneously
considered, but this guy has "real" credentials; he has paid his dues and
continues to contribute to the activity as an active Alumnus! I sincerely hope
that the Hall of Fame committee seriously considers the nomination and
selection of Gene Marotta on next year's ballot. I also hope that the Drum
Corps Hall of Fame does NOT ignore one of the main ingredients that is part of
the legacy that is the Hawthorne Caballeros.

Thank you. I would be interested in anyone's comments.

I've posted way too much today. I had an insomiac episode last night,
(hopefully not another one tonight, cross your fingers)

We have bandied this about in my house. Mr. Dittrich and I. He is adamant
that the performers have been neglected. He wonders why Bonnie Ott, Rob
Carson, Robbie Robinson and many other PERFORMERS are not in the DCI or Drum
corps hall of fames. He, of course, has always been a champion of the
performer, and I agree, because without them, the worker bee, the blue
collar guy, there is NO DRUM CORPS.

Thanks for letting me speak for him. There is no greater champion for the
kid in corps than he.

Posting to this newsgroup does not solve the problem. What is the criteria
for induction to the DCHOF?
Nominate Gene into the New Jersey DCHOF; I'll be there to see the ceremony,
again. Send in a nomination form with as much information possible
outlining the contributions of the individual to be considered for
selection. There's no such thing as 'stuffing the ballot box'. This is a
vote of quality not quantity. (That's the way it's done in Mass.)
You know, a lot of folks have 'slipped between the cracks' when it comes to
Hall of Fame consideration, whether it's been the wrong time or wrong corps
(unrecognized support).
I believe that the States Hall of Fames allow us to honor our former
contributors. This allows pre-DCI people the chance to be recognized for
their efforts in building, nurturing and supporting drum corps.
I just wish I could vote for "the other Marotta".

I' m not sure of the exact process, but I DO know that, the HOF
considers applications. They do not pick and chhose at random.
You need to obtain a nominating application and submit it to the
board. It does ask for an individuals acheivements and bio. I'm
sure with Gene's long history in the activity, he would be a
shoo in!

As for the omission of performers, you are mistaken. Look at the
list from last year....Dave Martin went into the HOF Saturday
night and won the DCA Best Soloist Award on Sunday night! Nice
weekend!

So, get on the stick, get an application and get Gene in the HOF!

Hey Tom,

Its nice to see when people are looking to get people in. I know I am in the
process of trying to get the process started for my father, Donnie Quinn.

But trust me ... it isn't as easy as some think. I know, cause I used to think
it was. Until I talked to Robert "Jomba" O'Conner who has finally been looked
at after his application was sitting in the "pot" for 10 years.

Its a great idea and I hope your efforts pan out. Just keep truckin ... I know
I will be. I think after 53 years in this activity my father deserves at least
that~!*

During the past week I have had occasion to speak with several
individuals each of whom has stated "I've got to make calls to make sure
that so and so is selected for induction" into the World DC HofF. To me,
that is quite sad - politics, politics, politics and a good buddy
environment. The Mass. Hall of Fame does not permit politicing - rather,
no one on the committee is aware of who the nomineees are prior to the
selection meeting - that way we ensure the integrity of the nomination
and selection process - we do not want a look of impropriety. It is a
"clean" system and will never be tainted by one or two people politicing
for another - a person is selected for their past and/or current
contributions and achievements to the drum corps activity - we would not
violate the sanctity of a most prestigous honor, induction into the
Massachusetts Drum Corps Hall of Fame.

My man Rafael ~

Whats up~!?* As I read your post I could not help but think of all that I am
trying to do to get my father, Donnie Quinn, it to the Hall of Fame as well.

Here is my advice to you! Go to any one of the Caballeros that are already IN
the fall of fame and have one of them "sponser" Gene. Have Gene fill out the
nomination form (it may not be that easy, I had to trick my father into doing
it ... LOL). Send it in to the committee and then politic your butt off for
him. It seems to have worked for "Jomba" so far (and it only took them 10
years to look at his application).

Its not a easy or quick process ... but I am sure with the help from most (if
not all) of the Caballeros and Caballeros Alumni someones voice will have to be
heard.

Good Luck with your efforts ... Keep on truckin ... I know I will be because
after 53 years in this activity my father at least deserves that much.
