I would have to say this one player from Devs. He was to the left of
the section leader in '96. He was playing some of the most
unbelievable stuff I have ever seen. He has some hands.

There have been A LOT of phenomenal players out there - to argue who's
best is something that will undoubtedly never be resolved...

Let's steer this thread towards giving the great players out there the
credit and recognition they deserve!!

Some great players I have experienced:

Josh Beales - 87-88-89-90 BDQ5
Chris Robinson - 85-86-87(?) BDQ5
Morgan Case - 86-87-88 BDQ5
Leif Marwede - (?)PR, 86 BDQ5
Pat Fitzgerald - 84-85 Spartans, 86-87 BDQ5
Bob Jones - QB 92-93-96
Richard Galloway - QB 93-94
Bill Bachman QB 94-95
**props to Scott Johnson, who taught me in BD 89 - he could ram most of
the stuff standing in front of you backwards, and off the left...

My apologies to anyone I left out!

You have to admit though, Camden, the centor tenor, was pretty amazing
too. If you ever got to sit in on a BD drumline warm-up, it was
definitely a treat. In Madison last year, we were lucky enough to get the
night off on the second night to watch the corps. We watched the BD
warm-up. I was certainly impressed. Later...

Leif Marwede - the most musical tenor player in DCI history (from 1980
anyway - I'm not THAT old). The best solo ever written.

Matt Almire is a VERY close second. Also very musical.

Music is the key - pure chops without phrasing is similar to a chainsaw.

Wayne

BTW - if I remember right, in 1986 they had two judges at individuals -
one had Leif in 1st, one in 8th......hmmm.......I guess a stick drop
really means you are a horrible musician (in one guys opinion). The
other judge had it right. IMHO.

Hey, anybody remember "Ghandi" from Limited Edition 91, 92; also North
Texas, Goshen, IN? Having marched with him, I know that he was greatly
respected by the folks we toured with. Been a few years since I have
seen him (PASIC in Columbus), so I don't know if he has built more of a
reputation or not.

Dan was the first tenor player I know of to use four mallets

If you want to see one of the best (it's is impossible to call "a best")

Good call David. I was wondering if anyone was going to mention Pat. One
of the greatest players I've ever seen. Along with Pat I think two other
people should mentioned. Bill Carnes was definitely a great one but Leif
Marwede (BD '96) may be one of the best that ever hung a set of tenors on
his back. Leif was so tall he just looked so intimidating with the drums
on. He had some incredible hands and was nothing short of a fantastic
teacher. Simply a great one.
