how about in the middle of the glassmen's show when the cavies decided to be
very unprofessional and rude and yell splooie in the middle of the show. can't
wait to hear that one on the cd's. bet the member's of the glassmen really
loved that one. cavies didn't get penalized or anything. hmm...... could
have waited till it was your turn to go on.

NCAA - not cool at all

there was a time in drum corps when you'd have gotten penalized for that.
What's wrong with the judging system that the judges allow that to happen.
Why don't judges call penalties against stuff like that?

Yes, the Cavie "Splooie", like the PR
SUTA, is gross and has been since the '60's.
One reason why I have not been a huge fan
of either corps.

I won't pretend to know what "splooie" means, that is only for
Cavaliers to know and should stay that way, but you are way off base with
the SUTA thing. If you think it is something nasty or gross, you've been
listening to too many rumors, and this is not a solid reason for not being
a fan of either corps.

Splooie refers to ejaculation; something I'm sure all Cavie parents are
proud of hearing before their son marches onto the field....

I agree. My college roommate was in Phantom's hornline while I was in Cavies,
yet we had the common sense not to inquire about the meaning of each others
corps "yell". We each knew that there was meaning attached that couldn't be
understood by those outside the organization. Similarly, any song identified
with a corps (Madison's "You'll Never Walk Alone", SCV's "Send in the Clowns",
etc.) represents a special link between current members of that corps and all
who preceded them. I did, and still do, respect the traditions unique to any
corps.

Doesn't it occur to you that the members might give you some hokey story in
order to preserve the brotherhood's secret? maybe it's just nothing.. but
everybody seems to THINK it's something really gross and really foul.. so
perpetuate what everyone thinks.. and move on..

On more than one occasion I have asked friends who are alums of the Cavaliers..
and on each occasion, I was told by both parties that he would not be able to
look his fellow corps members in the face ever again.. nor would he be able to
look himself in the mirror..

if you want to know.. . go march.. if you can't march.. learn to live with
the idea that you will never know..

distracting, and I think Cavies should have been penalized.

Any true Cavalier would never tell what "Splooie" really means. Even their
volunteers and staff, other than ex-Cavies, know. If this person was really an
ex-Cavalier, he was blowing smoke to fuel the fire. They are sworn to secrecy.
Let it be.

Well, it a corps song is one thing. A starting line yell or cheer is another
thing. It's unfair to the corps on the field when the "green machine" give
forth their (I personally think it is somehow sexually related and have
contacted Ken Starr to begin investigating it) splooie.

Would the Cavies appreciate having a corps performing after them do
something to distract the crowd away from their show?

Okay guys.. this has really gone too far, now..

do you HONESTLY think they lined up in the tunnel and yelled splooie to
INTENTIONALLY distract from glassmens' show?? I seriously doubt it..

Frankly, I would lay dollars to donuts that say the staff made a poor location
choice to give their final pep talk and have the corps yell Splooie.. and I
would further lay dollars to donuts that say the staff realized it a little too
late and probably would have made another choice had they realized it would
have made that much of an impact before hand.. surely they were concentrating
on what they had to do..
a mistake? yes.. an honest one..

Thank you. We yell that once the corps on the field is finished and were about
ready to step off. Mistakes happen for crying out loud. Why don't you people
quit your bitching and press on. If you think it was some vendictive plot
towards the Glassmen you really need to get a life and find something else to
worry about. If you think Splooie has anything to do with any sexual act or
function, you are a person who holds a senseless grudge that makes you look
ignorant. Shall I go on?

Actually, we have been yelling it since the 50s, and I was sworn to secrecy
and have kept it...as I'm sure have most other former marching members. I've
been married 37 years, one month and 18 days, and she still doesn't know the
truth. Don't trust any Cavalier, past, present or future who tells you what it
(allegedly) means...he's putting you on bigtime. I was particularly amused by

I appreciate the efforts of all Cavies, past
and present to minimize. lol. I marched
with many former Cavies--some very
close friends--still do. Interesting how
they all explain the yell the same way. Was
the same "false descriptor" part of the plan
lo these 40 years? Wow--if all the Cavs I
know cover the truth with the same story, does not the cover story become the
truth?

Methinks the alums do protest too much.

No I don't. However, if there was anyone with the organization that DIDN'T
know that another corps was playing at the time, I'd love to meet him and tell
him he's the least observant person in the history of unobservant people. Give

Gentleman and Ladies,
As a former marching member I have this to say. First, if our traditional
"yell" in any way dusturbed The performance of the Glassmen, I am most sure
that Jeff Fiedler and the rest of the Cavalier Org. is sorry. I was not there,
nor have I been a active part of this years corps. So, how do I know this? When
I was 15 yrs old and marching with the Cavaliers in 1981, I ( being a total
jerk, as 15yr olds tend to be) broke the ranks of another much smaller corps.
Jeff Fiedler was on our staff that year. Before the other corps in question
could respond I was grabbed by my own corps members and "taught" manners
towards other corps. A lesson I never forgot. Also, a lesson I helped teach in
later years. I will never believe that Jeff or any Cavalier/staff member would
break that "rule" regardless of DCI rules or any penalty they could suffer. The
Slpooie tradition, was done on the field after warm ups when I marched.
Personally, I like it better that way. However, The current members have the
right to do it when they want. Again, I am sure that they never would have done
it to intrude on Glassmen's performance or someone's enjoyment of it.
Second, (hehehehehehe) Why do you think it is a fraternity????????? We
pass along info down from one year to the next, this includes
misinformation!!!!!! I have been married for nine years, my wife has never
asked . So WHY ARE YOU!!!. I never asked why SUTA!! of my Phantom Friends.
Besides to you really think that if, as you assert, it is "gross" and that foul
it would have survived ??????????????????????????????????????
Finally, the only former- Cavaliers I know are dead, and even then they
are not ex-Cavaliers.

How were they suppose to know???? Simple. They were lined up to enter the
field next - which means, quite simply, there is another corps on the field
performing.

They should know that it's not acceptable to "SPLOOIE" until after the
announcer had said "The Glassmen from Toledo, Ohio", indicating their show was
over.

Cavies had how many competitions this summer? Their staff has how many years
of experience? How were they NOT suppose to know is a more appropriate
question.

Cavies screwed up - intentional or not - they screwed up - HUGE! Trying to
defend their incredibly thoughtless, rude, and inconsiderate behavior is
useless.

Does a Las Vegas corps show require every corps to have an Elvis imitator on

true they did make a mistake.

NO! They did not by any means do it on purpose. They had no grudge against
the G-men. So why pretend like Cav's delibrately tried to dis the glassmen?

Just a poor judgement call.

I doubt it!

Many times Cavaliers will make up stories about it to have fun with
non-Cavaliers. You are probably the victim of a joke. Every time you say you
know what it means , you add to the joke.

OK - sorry, but I simply cannot take it any longer. Yes, I am anal retentive.
I'm an accountant - sue me. Blame it on my growing up under the tick system -
the relentless pursuit of perfection if you will.

Inconsiderate does not mean intentional. Check Websters - it means careless of
the rights or feelings of others, thoughtless, not adequately considered, etc.

How about this? Cavies did not adequately consider whether screaming "SPLOOIE"
on the top of their lungs while lining up to perform would have been disruptive
to glassmen's performance. Their heat of hte moment hpe was thoughtless, as it
did not consider the possible consequences. They exercised poor judgement
(your words).

Seems these are the arguments being presented - thus, their behavior was
inconsiderate.

I don't think I have read a single post where anyone has so much as insinuated
their actions were deliberate, or that they hold some kind of grudge against
the Glassmen. I'm just sick of people trying to justify this glaring error on
their part. A futile attempt to justify their actions and try and indicate
responsibilty for their actions was not theirs.

Ok - I've vented. I can go back to my other anal retentive habbits - like
counting the number of times someone says "Uh" in a presentation.

Does anybody realize when they use this particular term that IT is actually a
sexual fetish?

When someone is anally retentive, they derive an extreme sexual pleasure from
retaining "pooh" in their "woochie" almost to the point of pain (sometimes
beyond)...

I was just wondering if anybody else knew that...

sorry.. didn't mean to go off subject..
