I'd like to again congratulate you on a good productive camp weekend!
I'm extremely encouraged by the way "The Canyon" is shaping up, and
considering how new it all is, you did a good job in getting it
up-to-speed and performed with the full ensemble. There's TONS of work
yet to do on that, so be sure your hands can play it! I'm planning on
having some music for the next production (Barber Sym #1/2) in a couple
weeks.
Finally, the line is set! It's been a longer process that in previous
years, but ultimately, we've ended up with a great mix of talent and
chemistry, and I'm happy that we took a bit more time to make the right
choices! All things considered (staff, show, members) this is going to
be an incredible year for us! Congrats to those who were recently
accepted into the section. Here's who we are:

Peter Karnowski, Bakersfield, CA
Tommy Finklea, Walden, NY
Eric Vega, Ontario, CA
Sean Beville, Annapolis, MD

A few things:
-Practice Constantly! This goes especially for the pit since we only see
y'all once per month. There are still many of you (battery AND pit) who
haven't developed the chops, sound, and sensitivity that we'll need to
pull off this year's show. You MUST take care of business by staying on
top of this NOW, for summer will be too late.
-DO NOT...I repeat, DO NOT ever post anything on internet newsgroups! As
those of you who've seen this are aware, this is a gossip area of the
internet where ignorance runs rampant! Do NOT contribute your views
(whether positive, negative, intelligent, or otherwise). There is simply
no benefit, and your time would be better served improving yourself as a
musician. As of this moment, this is my official policy, and if I've
found you, as a member, posting on the internet, your days in this corps
will be limited. End of story.
HOW'S this for internet newsgroup posting you fuck wad!!! Bite me Jim! You
are not ALL THAT! Hahahahaha! Get your
fuckin head out of your ass and think again. You are not shit! In or outside
of drum corps! I used to beat up guys like you in
high school. Dumb geek. This should fuckin put you in check asshole. I
guess my days with the corps is "limited". Hehehe. End of story.
-If you are a rookie, don't go running out to buy your new shiny corps
jacket. Wait until you have at least one year under your belt first.
This should not be a priority for you, and if it is, I'm worried.
Let the rookies wear thier fuckin jacket asshole. They deserve it! You are
NOT their mother. Mother fucker!
-Section Leaders - feel free to keep me informed of any immediate
equipment concerns, and I can usually have new items shipped directly to
the corps hall. Currently on the way are: Gambal cookies, bass mallets,
snare sticks (plus a few new models to try), Innovative Perc. mallet
re-wraps from last season (to be used for pre-competitive season
rehearsals), new marching plates (for sometime in April), grey kevlar
experimental snare heads (the official "Black Max" series won't be
availble for another couple months).
-The drums this year will be a green laquered wood grain. I have a
sample drum at my house, and the finish is awesome! Pearl is planning on
shipping earlier this year, so we aren't scrambling to get the new drums
together just before the first show of the year.
Nice! I still like the flaming drums of 94! Just like you, you flamer! GAY
FUCK! Get out of the closet!
-Buy or dub the CD's of the show music. You'll be able to find all the
material at either Tower Records or CD now (www.cdnow.com). Please let
me know if you have any questions in locating this music. It's important
that you all get in touch with all of this incredible music!
-Local folks: Attend this event (see below). It's a good chance to catch
some of the arts you may not see all the time, plus Murray and Carol have
collaberated with some fresh ideas for this performance. Very worth
while!:
*Choreographers Collective, Feburary 19, 20 at San Jose City College*
The Vanguard Dance Company will perform a new piece entitled "Somebody's
Child" with music by Murray Gusseck. The concert will be held on Friday,
February 19th, and Saturday, February 20th at the San Jose City College
Theatre on MoorPark Ave off the 280. Tickets for the event are $10 for
adults and $6 for students and seniors. Special discounts are also
available. There will be a live music concert entitled "Before the
Curtain", at 7pm featuring original compositions by area artists. This is
included in the admission price.
Other choreographers performing include: Tara Munjee, Jeanette Carol,
Leda Swan, KVA, High Release Dance, Natasha Carlitz, Maria West, Jeannine
Vogt-VogtART, and Robert Regala.
Please come and support Vanguard Dance Company and Dance in general!!!!
The company is first in the program, so come hear some music beforehand,
and be sure to catch us!
Since not everyone in the section has email access (Ray, Art, LaShawn,
Tim, Kristen, Sean?, Eric, Steve, Chris), I'd appreciate it if you all
would help to pass this message to them. Thanks.
Take care,
Jim "I am a stuck up asshole" Casella
Get real...you are NOT all that. Bitch.

Sorry to hear you got cut from SCV.

To Anonymous: Get help, and soon. If I'm not mistaken, you just violated
copyright law by not getting permission to quote a private email. You are full
of rage, and its almost out of control.
How can I tell? You didn't even bother to distinguish between the announcement
and your own comments. You are rapidly approaching the age when your mistakes
aren't going to be taken lightly. Keep going down this road, and the
consequences will be a lot more serious than just getting cut by the Vanguard.
To Jim Casella: Well, first I don't know if the quoted message is an accurate
transcription. If it isn't, then you can disregard the following.
Jim, it is foolish and naive for anybody to think they can control the free
speech of adolescents. Don't believe me? Just ask yourself what your reaction
would have been in 1989 if I had told you and your fellow SJS band members not
to use that nickname you guys made up for me.
Another issue is basic-level respect. Your members are probably mature enough
to decide for themselves what is beneficial. To proscribe to them what they
should or shouldn't be doing on their own time is to treat them like children.
It also comes off as arrogant.
The prohibition is futile anyway. "Mr. Anonymous" is proof enough of that. Even
if your members don't post, email can be cut and pasted and posted by someone
else. If you think you can dam up the free flow of information on the internet,
you'd better bone up on the story of King Canute.
Finally, it isn't very wise to insult your audience. I'm referring to the
Usenet audience that reads your product announcements. The operative expression
here might be "biting the hand that feeds you".
Good luck to both of you.

Is there a problem with the token Canadian?
Canuck
I have many American friends and understand the importance of friendship
between Canada and the U.S.
I appreciate the proximity of our countries and the benefits we Canadians
have experienced as a result of being friends with the U.S.A.
Sorry, but I will not include your remark in my personal opinion of the U.S.
If the Santa Clara Vanguard has Canadian members then I am happy that people
from Canada were able to appreciate the leaning experience from such an
important organization as Santa Clara. I consider those people extremely
lucky and wish I were still within the age group to do so.
There are many corps in the US who have had Canadian members (I have friends
who have marched in Phantom, Cadets and Cavies) and I think they were
extremely lucky to have had that kind of an opportunity in their lifetime.
I will not return your e-mail by bashing the U.S. because it isn't in my
heart.
The U.S. is a great country which I am glad I had the opportunity to visit
in my lifetime. I am also thankful that democracy has been defended by the
U.S. and that generations like myself were able to reap the rewards
(something I am sure your past relatives defended in their lifetime).
1. It is way too cold.
2. American's didn't want to deal with the French.
3. The US government was amused that someone in North America created and used
"monopoly-money" besides Parker Brothers.
4. Gives the USA someone else to invade, should we get bored, or need a
distraction from another Presidential scandal.
sarcasm: off
As an SCV Alumnus, I find what you read to be rather ridiculous. (Assuming
that everything that was cut and pasted was accurate). How in God's name can
you go around telling these kids what they can or cannot say on the computer?
I agree with something that someone else had posted about free speech. As an
instructor, you need to step down from your pedistal and treat this kids with
the respect they deserve. Quit treating them as if you are their "master". If
Gail Royer was around he would be disappointed in what you had said. For the
sake of the corps in which you represent, show some class!
As for "anonymous" he's obviously ticked off about something.

When I was teaching in The Great White North, the only problem
with the "Toking Caunucks" was their constant search for
the "Supreme Fooder!!"
Come to think about it, the same can be said of the Southern Cal
Kadets:-)

No double-standard there.

SCV 76, 77, 79
This post is a personal opinion and does not represent the opinions of
any group I may or may not be affilliated. And of course, spelling
does not count.
>No double-standard there.
It was my understanding that Jim Casella himself did NOT post that. It was
(again, from my understanding) a private email that someone posted on the
group.
Double standard? No.

Mmmm... on my monitor here, it appeared as a conventional post [SCV's
new drumline positions] in between which someone had inserted [via
offset or tab-over] some very inflamatory, angry comments... which to me
seemed to come from a different, very immature writer.
On the other hand, if the whole post was supposed to be a joke [which
doesn't seem likely], to me it failed miserably. Not knowing the
background or mindset of the poster, nor the circumstances it was
written under, the post looked at face value to be a genuine slam.
But that's the inherent problem with text-only communication: the
subtleties of voice inflection --not to mention facial expression-- are
completely absent, and thus what one intends to say can come across
very, very differently. "Emoticons" and punctuation assist clarification
of course, but it can still be questionable nevertheless.
