Another cut on the same side of the same album is Tommy Martin (also playing a
G-D Getzen soprano bugle) playing two pieces. First he plays "The Fox Hunt",
and then a Harry James standard entitled "You Made Me Love You".
This album is a pure gold collector's item. If you should ever see for sale
anywhere, grab it, it's a real treasure of one of the great hornlines of the
past.
Besides, it's good to have a sense of history about our activity.
I know Charlie Schiavone, who is with the Yankee-Rebels Alumni has custom made
digitally mastered CD's of this great album (I'm listening to it now and the
sound quality is like you're listening to it LIVE). For those who might be
interested in having him make a custom CD for you, his business phone numbers
are 410-313-8584 or 410-313-9786.

...did anyone mention George "Sidemouth" Richardson... holy Jesus, is he good!
His solo in "Rainmaker" is absolutely incredible.
I remember him coming to our short rehearsal before finals in 1997 and playing
the soprano solo in "Elks Parade" - cold as hell - probably hadn't picked up a
horn in months - and he blew the chrome off of the horn. I have never heard
anything like that. Wow!!
Also speaking of the Skyliner soloist dynasty - who could forget John Girardi -
damned good soloist and one of the most consistent players I have ever known -
a class "A" musician, and of course "Dirty" Eddie and his mellophone solo in
Elks (somehow, it always gets back to Elks Parade...) - THAT is some amazing
playing. Horns fear these men. Incredible...

Robert,
You mentioned 2 REALLY great soloists from the Skyliners. And, yes, we have
almost ALWAYS had the best soloists in drum corps in every era. "Sidemouths"
forte was his range (heard him hit Z sharp a couple of times myself <G>) and
the fact that he could use a technique called "circular breathing", something
that for mere mortals is very difficult at best to do. I can remember when the
mantle of "lead soloist" was past from Johnny "Grass" to "Sidemouth" back in
'78. Believe it or not George used to be a little timid about standing in front
of large crowds and playing, so all during that season "Grass" and "Sidemouth"
(don't ya just love these nicknames???) were floaters, and every time "Grass"
had a solo, "Sidemouth" would be right by his side. And vice-versa, every time
"Sidemouth" had a solo, "Grass" would be right by his side. Guess it worked
because "Sidemouth" definitely lost his fear of playing in front of large
crowds now didn't he. <G> You wanna hear the tape of the "Tribute to Hy"
concert back in 1985. We played "Elks" twice in encore and you wanna hear the
"battle" of solos between the two of them THAT night. The audience got a REAL
treat.
As for John Girardi, he is one of the most technically precise hornplayers
around, right behind Bobby Burke, who I consider the best all-around soprano in
drum corps today. My appreciation for his talent took giant leaps forward at
DCA Finals in Scranton (the Guys and Dolls show) when he performed with such
emotion and feeling. He chose to forego all of the technical proficiency and
played from his heart.....he was OUTSTANDING.
And another thing........<G>. We've left out some Hall-of-Famers who played
solo for Skyliners. In the words of one Tom "Bucky" Swan, "How could we have
anything like this and not include George Rodriguez." George was a charter
member of Garbarina. He left Skyliners to become one of the greatest soloists
that Cabs ever had. Then returned to Skyliners to rebuild our corps in the mid
50s. Then once again returned to Cabs. Another one would be Bill Hayes who
played with the Skyliners and, like Rodriguez, went to Cabs. And yet another
solo soprano (not a Hall-of-Famer, but a good soloist) who got his start with
Skyliners and went to the Cabs was Harry Hazelwood. Jeez,..... if it weren't
for the Skyliners, the Cabs would have been hard pressed for solo sopranos back
in those days. <G> Now no offense to some great soloists like George DelMonte
or Mike Smith.....oops DelVecchio from Cabs back in those days.
Just thought I'd pass along a little Skyliner history and tradition.....<G>
