Here we go again......John Simpson (no relation to Bart). Played a G-D Baritone
and made it sound like a French Horn. On the Skyliner vinyl album "A Portrait
In Brass" produced back in 1963 one of the cuts on the album is of John Simpson
playing Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue" on a G-D Getzen Baritone, and didn't miss
a note. I'm tellin' ya, this guy could play a garden hose and make it sound
like an orchestral oboe. Wonder what he'd sound like on one of these new three
valves were you can hit every note without having to lip it.

Another cut on the same side of the same album is Tommy Martin (also playing a
G-D Getzen soprano bugle) playing two pieces. First he plays "The Fox Hunt",
and then a Harry James standard entitled "You Made Me Love You".

This album is a pure gold collector's item. If you should ever see for sale
anywhere, grab it, it's a real treasure of one of the great hornlines of the
past.

Besides, it's good to have a sense of history about our activity.

I know Charlie Schiavone, who is with the Yankee-Rebels Alumni has custom made
digitally mastered CD's of this great album (I'm listening to it now and the
sound quality is like you're listening to it LIVE). For those who might be
interested in having him make a custom CD for you, his business phone numbers
are 410-313-8584 or 410-313-9786.

P.S.: Charlie, you owe me big time for the plug. <G>

good in a duet in 85 in VK's closer with Ron Zeilinger, and he was pretty damn
good too, and our baritone soloist Dave Meade for VK in 87 was pretty damn good

names, but the fact isIMHO, that this one is too close to call.

I will add to this list by including some well know Canadian
soloists..well, known to most of us anyways....

Jamie Oatt - you can catch him on the BD 88 tape..he is the second last
sop soloist during the reprise, but was also an outstanding soloist for
the Oshawa Rebels....one of my earliest mentors....

Bob Brant - once again from the Oshawa Rebels, this man had to be heard
to be believed...

Dave "Antman" McPhee - one of the best baritone players I have ever
heard...you can hear him play on the Dutch Boy 90 tapes...also played
with the Rebels

Just a few of my suggestions...

Gus Wilke
PeeWee Todaro
JoJo Todaro
Johnny Guarino
Joe De Figlia
Joey Arioso
John "Bush" Leonhardt
Jimmy Ednie
Vinny Costanza
Dom DiQuatro
Joe Chizek
John "Grass" Urspruch
Kenton Clark
Wilton Ramos
"Red" VanDuyne
Jack Papa
"Butch" Anderson
Manny Solart
George "Sidemouth" Richardson
John Girardi
Bobby Burke
... so many more

All marched with the NY Skyliners sometime between 1963 and 1978 (the majority
in 1972). All could handle multiple solos played by the corps. I've been real
lucky to have known them all.

Come on down to an Alumni rehearsal sometime and meet them for yourself. Even
the ghost of those departed sometime show up. <G>

Enthusiastic seconds on the Cabs soloists. I would add Gene Merauda (sic) to
that group.
So far I see no votes for Tommy (Bucky) Swan of the Skyliners? Count one here.
Tone, range, control, stamina, you name it. When he was at the top of his game
they didn't come any better!
I would also include among the best the Reading Buccaneers John (Junior)
Ferarro from the 60's. A triple-tonguing (some say flutter) specialist.

The frenchhorn soloist during Nessun Dorma and Vesti la Giubba was Jeff Shaw.
Ray Vasquez was the soprano soloist at the end of Vesti la Giubba.

I thought Jeff was particularly good during the introduction to the Organ

His solo in "Rainmaker" is absolutely incredible.

I remember him coming to our short rehearsal before finals in 1997 and playing
the soprano solo in "Elks Parade" - cold as hell - probably hadn't picked up a
horn in months - and he blew the chrome off of the horn. I have never heard
anything like that. Wow!!

Also speaking of the Skyliner soloist dynasty - who could forget John Girardi -
damned good soloist and one of the most consistent players I have ever known -
a class "A" musician, and of course "Dirty" Eddie and his mellophone solo in
Elks (somehow, it always gets back to Elks Parade...) - THAT is some amazing
playing. Horns fear these men. Incredible...

I know I could be accused of being prejudice, but Roger Grupp, Minnesota Brass
is afantastic Soprano Soloist, and when you add the fact that he started out as
a Trombone Player, it's even more amazing. Also, in 1991, a fellow named Frank
Minear, from Washington State, marched with Minnesota Brass, in his one and
only season in Senior Corps, won not only the I&E Sop title at 1991 DCA, he was
also chosen the best soloist in DCA finals that year. Last, but certainly not
least, I don't think any discussion of "Best Soloist ever", could be complete
with out mentioning Ritchie Price of the RI Matadors.

Robert,

You mentioned 2 REALLY great soloists from the Skyliners. And, yes, we have
almost ALWAYS had the best soloists in drum corps in every era. "Sidemouths"
forte was his range (heard him hit Z sharp a couple of times myself <G>) and
the fact that he could use a technique called "circular breathing", something
that for mere mortals is very difficult at best to do. I can remember when the
mantle of "lead soloist" was past from Johnny "Grass" to "Sidemouth" back in
'78. Believe it or not George used to be a little timid about standing in front
of large crowds and playing, so all during that season "Grass" and "Sidemouth"
(don't ya just love these nicknames???) were floaters, and every time "Grass"
had a solo, "Sidemouth" would be right by his side. And vice-versa, every time
"Sidemouth" had a solo, "Grass" would be right by his side. Guess it worked
because "Sidemouth" definitely lost his fear of playing in front of large
crowds now didn't he. <G> You wanna hear the tape of the "Tribute to Hy"
concert back in 1985. We played "Elks" twice in encore and you wanna hear the
"battle" of solos between the two of them THAT night. The audience got a REAL
treat.

As for John Girardi, he is one of the most technically precise hornplayers
around, right behind Bobby Burke, who I consider the best all-around soprano in
drum corps today. My appreciation for his talent took giant leaps forward at
DCA Finals in Scranton (the Guys and Dolls show) when he performed with such
emotion and feeling. He chose to forego all of the technical proficiency and
played from his heart.....he was OUTSTANDING.

And another thing........<G>. We've left out some Hall-of-Famers who played
solo for Skyliners. In the words of one Tom "Bucky" Swan, "How could we have
anything like this and not include George Rodriguez." George was a charter
member of Garbarina. He left Skyliners to become one of the greatest soloists
that Cabs ever had. Then returned to Skyliners to rebuild our corps in the mid
50s. Then once again returned to Cabs. Another one would be Bill Hayes who
played with the Skyliners and, like Rodriguez, went to Cabs. And yet another
solo soprano (not a Hall-of-Famer, but a good soloist) who got his start with
Skyliners and went to the Cabs was Harry Hazelwood. Jeez,..... if it weren't
for the Skyliners, the Cabs would have been hard pressed for solo sopranos back
in those days. <G> Now no offense to some great soloists like George DelMonte
or Mike Smith.....oops DelVecchio from Cabs back in those days.

Just thought I'd pass along a little Skyliner history and tradition.....<G>
